You know when I use the term "beat," I'm not only referring to the quality of the vape, but also, the ease under which a properly tensioned micro coil that achieves "The Effect," and properly wicked micro coil, can get the job done, and the ease of producing it, AFTER one learns how to do so. As you know, I created a coiler to make the process quick and easy for myself, and enjoy it every day. I don't mean unsurpassed in terms of vape, which is subjective any way you look at it, but the Effect, is strangely elusive to achieve, powerfully effective, relatively easy to produce (learning curve), and "Hard to Beat." SuperX gave us all a gift with its introduction more than a year ago. This is what I mean by "Standard", AND the inherent limitations of the PT.Know exactly what you both mean. There is a good deal of variability within the design constraints and limitations of the KPT. It's slot width being one of them. I think that's what Bill meant by standard. A proper electrical installation within the scope of capability of the atomizer. I was jokingly alluding to just how far afield we can go. I agree cig...here are no limits but nature, I basically said. And they are most definitely reflected within the design of the KPT. Experiments won't overcome them. But it can be fun to try. On this thread though, what distinguishes it for those who have benefited, is that posters have stayed remarkaby focused on the prize a great vape.

As you know, I use German rta's most of the time on my German Battery, or my American Provari. Truly hard to beat.....not because the vape is not surpassable, but because the vape is excellent, AND relatively easy to achieve. I believe now that this dead horse is not going to get up again. I've found my pinnacle of vape quality with my protanks a while back and it just the simplest regular 5 wrap coil with 30 gauge kanthal and hemp wicking. Unless there is some sorta stellar new technology, I see my self vaping off my kanger protanks for a long time to come.
I do feel some pain for those who either refuse or just cant be bothered to DIY their protanks to get a better vape experience and only use stock heads cause it only gets better and some just don't see that.... Owell

I've got the build for my PT 2s that I really like.
I build a vertical coil with 28 ga, 9-10 wraps on a 1/16" bit, usually meters out about 1.3 ohm.
30 ga also works, 8 wraps on that 1/16" bit usually goes about 1.6 ohm.
I wick with cotton around the outside of the coil, with the coil right over the center.
Oh, and Aero base! The Aero base is a must for me on the PT 2.
My Protanks live on a Smok E-Pipe with an 18350, so I vape from 4.2 volts down to 3.5 or so, so that means about 13 watts starting out sliding down to about 9 watts.
I get a very nice vape, flavorful with a small but dense cloud. It's consistent, but lessens as battery life drops. I can't seem to get a dry or burnt hit, though I don't really chain on it, maybe 2 or 3 in fairly close succession.
I do wrap under tension and burn the coil and compress it before I place it.
I really like the PT 2, I have a Taifun and some RDAs that are just sitting unloved.

My latest kanger builds using a .070 dia mandrel with cotton wick beats the pants off my previous 1/16" builds with the same wicking. The 070" bits fit perfect in the wick slots and are availble online for about $10 a ten pack. Pretty convienient imo, although not as easy as running to the local b&m to buy a 1/16.
The increased juice flow and reserve capacity has been proven to allow folks (in this thread) to vape at higher wattages while still maintaining the "effect". Still requires a properly "tension wound" contact coil and a tight build but no other modifications to the device are needed.
Hmmmmm, higher wattage=more dense vapor=more flavor.

You are welcome. The originator and original developers of the micro coil consider the micro coil to be a coil with sufficient tension (as Mac describes in great detail), and of particular I.D. between .055" and .065", resistance, etc. to achieve the "Effect." Larger are mini coils, smaller are nano coils. Personally, I don't care what they call them. I have enjoyed coils from about 1/16" to 5/64". With the right air flow, tension, wattage and juice....well, Vaping Nirvana is possible. The thread where all this started is here:

vaped at 6v, just lacked compared to the normal 5 wrap of 32 I normally do. Tried many micros in them and havnt had one i like yet.

A tensioned coil does take the fullest advantage of Nextel's flow rate. The best deflection of XC-132 does seem to occur somewhere approaching the 1.8mm slot width on most clearo's (after saturation). It's amazing how delicate it is to constriction, just like a hose. When you think about it so are electrons…and that's why tension works!
Once you've tried it a few times and have a first hand look at what flow should look like, feel like, taste like in an atomizer the world of flavor and vapor discovery is open to you. You realize that it can be replicated not only on a Protank but certainly elsewhere. You also see the horizons on temperature that may have seemed elusive as not being necessarily a limitation.
Controlling "the effect" is profoundly satisfying on many levels.

Just joined this thread and reading from the beginning; gonna take awhile but wanted to thank everyone for just wonderful information. I have been rebuilding Protank style coils for several months and wish I found this sooner!
On another note -I have not read the whole thread so I don't know if this has been posted already or not. Apologize if it has. Lightning Vapes now carries all parts for the heads - the whole thing (minus wire and wick) plus individual parts in packs of 10. Top post, grommets (both rubber or silicone), positive pin, top cap. I have all parts because I tend to be fumble fingered and forget to close the sink drain...

What ohm was that at 3+?
Of course twisted 32g isn't going to heat up as fast as standard 32g but there is no way you were vaping a 2'ish ohm at 6v on a ProTank and it taking long to heat up.
Even at 4 ohms the heat up would be almost instant @ 6 volts, your issue was a short or something as Mac said earlier.

1.7, I have been building coils for awhile and like I said I havnt found a micro I like in the protank, did it work? yes but it felt weak and cool compared to a normal wrap. Micros will stay in my mech just not my protanks No short, I check every build on my multimeter. Would a regulated device even fire a shorted coil?
maybe ill give it another shot but honestly I rarely use it anymore.
Happens a million times a day on Protank's. Example, a grazing contact of the positive lead termination at the pin to the housing caused by deflection of the grommet will drive resistance towards infinite permitting high energy draw and circuit degradation or destruction. Until then, your variable will fire within its threshold tolerance. A variation that mimics this is improper coil geometry, like hand winds, which expose too much wire and wick to air and rapid releases of energy effectively accomplishing the same. Likewise negative lead slip inducing a high end turn which very commonly happens with installation of the tank to a batt with slippery silicone grommets. What many people mistakenly consider a great vape is often times (power) cell early death in the making. And really not too efficient a vape experience.
Not trying to be flip here but there are a lot of success stories on this sub. They reveal what the Protank and by extension vape technology is really capable of. That is, if we're willing to accept we haven't quite found the best vape ever and are willing to do something about it. Regardless anything and everything learned here on a Protank absolutely works everywhere else. It's the same physics and mechanics.
I've had a love/hate relationship with the Protank forever. So I know exactly where you're coming from. Yet I've come to admire its modest but ample capabilities, as I acknowledged my own limitations along the way. It's been a pleasure in the discovery. I write about some of those moments here.

My 30awg kanthal A1 measures 9.6 ohms per foot instead of the specified 8.36.
No wonder my coils have been reading higher resistance than normal. About 1 wrap worth of resistance higher than than others here on ecf.
Measurement process:
Excactly 6 feet of the wire clamped under light tension to straighten wire. Measured resistance with my HP 34401A meter and subtracted test lead resistance.
Results: Measured 57.6 ohms
Thoughts: Gives me greater assurance that my builds were not the cause of my abnormally high resistance readings.
