Ok, Bill's admitted it... dripping is better, but not worth the hassle. Exactly why you need a REO Bill!
I like regulated mods. I also like the tube form factor. I'm also thinking of going to a larger battery size, as I have to change several times a day on my 18650 2000 mah's. PITA. Btw, how's your squonker working for you?

This is about how much cotton I use.

Mac, I have never used anything other than cotton in my micro coils (I did start with the synthetics at first, but that was a long time ago, now). I have resisted trying the many different wicking materials on the market, and it seems that every day, there are new ones.

Kinda reminds me of the beginning of my journey with "coils" and RBA/RTA's. I tried maybe 15 different builds. I ended up with tensioned micro coils, usually singles, in RTA's. I like the RTA's, though I know I can get a better vape with a whole lot more effort (dripping). I rarely drip. Seems to consume my life, but I must admit it's a better vape, but just not worth the hassle to me. I kinda feel that the new wicking mediums may be the same for me, as well (YMMV). Since I have two lifetimes of cotton in my vaping closet, and literally dozens of drippers, tanks, RTA's, cartos, and clear's (about 100 I guess), I still use only two now, because I love the vape, the flavor, the vapor, the ease of use, the large 5 mil tank on the Taifun, and it's just the best combination of features for me; and not, necessarily the best vape for me. So, somewhere along the line, I stopped chasing the vape, and "settled" on those features that best work for me in my life. Making near-perfect coils and wicking them with cotton coils (coiled cotton), is about a 60 - 90 second procedure for me, or about as long as I like to go without a vape....YMMV.

So, that being said, why should I try these new wicking mediums? Not that I give a rat's ... that others may love them to death, but given my preferences, why should I switch? As you know, there are not a lot of folks that I would ask this question of, and I very much care what your opinion on the matter may be. Kindest regards, my friend.

I agree 100 % with you, and i have gone through almost exactly the same journey/process as you have, with the only difference being i started with the vivi-nova instead of the carto's. I have also settled on the simple t.m.c micro coil. All the other more complicated builds yielded very little advantage if any, for a lot more hassle.

I also find drippers a pita, and use them only to test new flavors. I use a lot more rta/clearos than you with a lot more flavors and i find that i prefer certain flavors more with different clearos/rta's. I bought the Taifun based on your recommendation and it does have certain advantages over the kayfun, but man that thing is huge, and even uglier than the pictures suggested. I just love the looks of the kayfun and aerotank, and for that reason i seem to use them more than the others, but i use the pt2, taifun, aspire and innokin x.1 as well. I will be giving the latter two away though as the aspire is a pita to rebuild and the x.1 is not rebuildable despite the assurances of someone on these threads which led me to order it in the first place !

is the top picture the cotton you start with ? do you not unwrap the cotton ball into a strip ?

Yes I start with a cotton ball, unwrap some of it, then pull it apart to get it as wide and thin as shown in the pic.
Then I compress it by squeezing the sides in; then roll it to make the wick snake. I find compressing first helps make a more uniform wick snake; in this case enough for 6-8 kpt wicks.

hmm, i use cvs sterile cotton balls, which clearly started as a strip and then rolled into a ball. If you untangle carefully, you turn them back into the original 9 cm by 2.5 cm strip they started as, with uniform density. Maybe that's why i had more success than you with the varied wick diameter. I started with a more uniform diameter to begin with !?

I have been reading about these japanese cotton pads called koh gen do, which are supposedly super clean and super easy to work with. Gonna order some i think.

Yeah, I'm using crap cotton balls for sure. Difficult to manage them but I live waaaaay out in the sticks; the nearest walgreens is 1.5 hrs. Nearest cvs 2.25 hrs.
Where are you getting your koh gen do from?

Not sure yet, wherever the shipping cost is cheaper. The pads themselves are a lot more expensive ( $ 12 for 60 pads ) than regular cotton, but in the whole scheme of things the cotton cost is negligible. I mean, if you can wick 30 coils with one pad, that's 1800 coils, or easily 40 years worth for me !

They seem to be sold out in a lot of sites. Vapers have found out about them, apparently !

Here's a youtube video showing the wicking process with koh gen do :

So Maz, check out the second pic and how little cotton I use. It shows why "wick sag" is an issue for me and why I use the WT method. I found that less wick means monster vape; as dense a vape as the rxw I tried, even with my crappy cotton.

Checked out the video. Definitely going to order some KGD! Love the oriented fibers.

Will probably try to use less kgd than superx though as I like to encourage as much capillary action as possible in the kpts.

Thanks Maz

Edit: just ordered kgd at barneys.com for $12 free shipping.

yeah, you do use a little less cotton than me, at least the exposed part not in contact with the coil. so i see why you need to tuck the wick in.

free shipping sounds good, ordering now ! thanks for that !

ordered ! first time ever i was charged sales tax, but i guess it makes sense, they are based in NY and shipping to NY.

Kinda what I figured maz. Finding the optimal res. production zones on the KPT and helping folks quickly get to temp sweet spot closest to them would offer the best solution for the greatest number.

Most of us just don't have the time. Some, not the inclination.

But the tools are there the day it suits your fancy.

Good luck all.

:)
