...Airflow, I have found is also crucial when it comes to flavor and is also important to the life of your coil. Due to the fact it is used to cool your coil, to little flow and you will gunk up your coil before the wick goes bad, to much airflow and you lose flavor ( at least IMHO ).

I had to revisit your above picture post to highlight this profound observation. I always cite the importance of matching the wind to the wick and add last the importance of airflow. But you said a mouthful brother so there's nothing to be humble about here in observing the obvious. Last does certainly not mean least in importance.

The maxim here being that too cool a temperature either by under-supply of power or overcooling of the wind will gunk your vape people. And the applications are broad. Don't let battery power dive too low. Don't position or draw builds too close to air. Make air holes larger (or smaller) than need be for your preferred wind and resistance.

Ying/Yang. Be the coil.

Good luck all!

:)

+5 there Mac. No surprise coming from you.

Along the same lines my setups are all based on my preferred draw effort FIRST. I like a 3-4 second direct lung-hit at light to medium-light draw effort. My builds have to match that spec or the build and/or device gets the "file 13" treatment. Example: just bought an Itaste MVP2 that came with a Iclear 30. Ain't gonna do it. Too restrictive for a lung hitter. Rewicked with kgd and still ain't happening. First mouth to lung hitter to PM me with an address gets it for free.

Anyway, all my tank builds are based on airflow first. Wicking density for proper juice flow is second followed by wattage/voltage adjustments for proper vaporization. After that I may move up or down in wire gauge and/or resistance for battery efficiency and firing time reasons but never before the first three are dialed in.

Alrighty Then,

So according to ohm's law we can build a 1.5 ohm coil out of many gauge sizes of kanthal. I can build one out of 32 gauge and one out of 26 gauge, now applying another constant - 8 watts our answer will always be the same 3.46 volts.

Now we also know it will take much longer to power up a 26 gauge coil so you increase the power to avoid burning your e-liquid due to the time involved, yet power means heat.

At what point do you start sacrificing flavor over coil to wick coverage?

Just curious, or I could be totally wrong in the way I'm looking at this!

I think I'm going to let someone else handle this answer technically.

My answer is — What does the juice like?

:D

Good luck.

Thanks and I think I agree. That's kinda what I was alluding to with my question above. If what you like from a juice is chaining at a relatively low temperature with light short draws it's one thing. Periodic long slow healthy cigar pulls call for another. Both have temperature and consequently wind/wick/power implications.

To do 1-2 sec sharp good tugs 6-8 times without over-heating the juice (stays cool) with a good cloud and good density from my fav on my Raiju/JEM required a very tight precise outboard cross-post t.mc.'s...and for that I break my low-Ω limit of 0.3Ω with dual 5-turn 26 on 2.2mm. And I get it from above 3.8>4.1 volts @ 0.27Ω. A bit warm over that. So you have to blow some cloud cover to settle 'er down. LOL A more tranquil and richer vape with twisted pair at .65Ω would be more like a pipe. But this mod has that kind of explosive response. Might as well take advantage of it.

I'm kind of building all around these days for that. It's like that first wake up smoke you took too hard tugs off of and wished you could continue doing but for the heat after that second pull. Except now you can! Takes all your points into consideration I think and great fun.

The thing is all the above are essentially traditional mouth-to-lung. Just hard hits. And I really do enjoy both even as flavor comes first. I enjoy recreating that cloudy cigar feel and vapor texture.

Finding that happy compromise starts with that first perfect coil. And perfecting chaining on a Protank. I'd agree with you too many of the others fall short.

Good luck all.

:)

Crg, even though your math is fine the answer as Mac has indicated is not cut and dry for all devices. The more detail you can provide the better chance someone can accurately respond.

Which device, battery, juice type (NET?, sweetened?, how many ml per day? etc) length of draw, draw effort, draw frequency and whether you are a vapor or flavor chaser are important aspects to consider when evaluating coil gunking/wick longevity.

Something else to consider is that larger wire not only heats up slower but also cools slower due to its greater mass. Fun stuff!

Yeah, you kinda do have to decide what you wanna do. And man, we have a lot of choices today. It's amazing how quickly things have diversified in the 15 months since I began. And I never imagined in that space of time that I would be able to recreate that cigar feel I was talkin' about or the unicorn of first tug cigarette chaining I describe. But it's here folks. And personally I crave that kind of variety and amazing depth of choices. The truly wonderful thing is that once you have a proper electrical build under your belt, the one yard line, the view to the goal line stretches in any direction you want it too.

Good luck all.

You're absolutely right cig!

When you look at it that way, combinations are endless and do end up being a personal preference. Which is what Mac said about the goal line.
Master the basics, than where you carry it is up to you!

Boy I like it here! :toast:

All these great posts from the previous 24 hours, has got me to re-consider my decision to standardize my wick/coil/airflow/power combo.
Although i arrived at it with a great deal of trial and error, and it suits my vaping technique, you all have caused me to think it's probably not close to being the best vape i could get from each juice. I mean, i get a pretty good vape across the board, but should i settle for that ?

Just as i was getting comfortable and content with my set up too !

The best vape you're ever had, my dear, you're having right now; but, tomorrow is another day.

It's a beautiful thing.

Good luck.

I thought i wpuld chime in and say that I have gotten a hand ful of coils successfully built. I built coils for me my BF and i even at work while on lunch built some for my friend at work. First time on a rebuildable and not sure of the ohms because MVP couldn't read it but the vape and cloud was huge. He was happy and I proved him wrong that I couldn't build wick and have him ready to drip in about 5-6 mins. I was right he was wrong got free lunch. But enough rambling I owe this all to mac (no worries the trade secrets are safe) but thanks to all of ya on ECF and Mac especially for all the help. Yall rock.

I know its funny! I was putting along loving my set-up and completely happy until I read the last 24 hours stuff and all the sudden I am "what the hell am I missing?" and just when I thought I was out of coil/wick school here comes more tactics and stuff to learn. Gives me angst.

The possibilities are endless my friend!
That's what is nice about all of this, is that you can tailor your builds for specific needs.
You build to get the best out of what you have, vg/pg ratio, device nic level and many more.
Once you concur basic technique the rest is a piece of cake regardless of device!

Jaime, glad you are learning to rebuild. Something I encourage even with noobs to vaping but we have to be careful. Very careful when building on unfamiliar equipment. You didn't get an ohm reading but fired the device anyway? That can result in serious injury to yourself or others. Let me explain.

Your MVP will not read resistance below about .8 ohms nor will it fire. But a mech mod will. You didn't say what power source your friend was using for his dripper but if it was an unregulated battery and his dripper had a short........well........pipe bomb.

A violent explosion occured at a vape meet in Texas this year when a mech mod vented. Thank goodness the guy dropped it when the switch stuck. Still blew holes in the ceiling and burnt the floor. Little pieces of mech mod were found all over the place.

Please check your new build res before firIng Every time. You never know; there could be a piece of wire shorting your atty.

Pipe bomb in your mouth no less. Scary thought.

Yeah right! I love it when I walk into a vape store and half they guys (and gals) there are all cloud comp experts overnight 'cause their best bud taught 'em 6wraps22on3/32…and they're sitting' there pushin' their half-shorting hand jerked micro's two-inches from your nose. You ask what they're runnin'. Oh, yea, they say. I like it hot. I smile, and stand back. Not as much concerned about the winds as I am about the vtc5's they buried to 2.x volts three times this week already (if they really are vtc5's off ebay!). You get the picture.

But Jaime, she asked. I was glad to oblige and help her work out a build plan for duals with 28AWG. Took longer to talk about it than it did for her to execute it. LOL No doubt to her friends surprise.

Still Jaime put that carto-meter on the shopping list. Fer sure.

Take care.

I understand but trust I know what you are saying. But he hit it once went home and text me and said it was like perfevt i dont know what the ohms were. But i know he tested it and he says that's what he was running before. All i did was build the coils.

All the the things I hear about mods blowing up will be why I will never have anything but a regulated device.

Ohm reader is on my list of purchases. Mac and I did discuss wraps and how to get it right.

Again friend put on his ohm reader when he got home didn't tell me the ohms but said he is good and in the safe zone.
