If you know, you know.

All that we can do is just survive
All that we can do to help ourselves is stay alive

All that we can do is just survive
All that we can do to help ourselves is stay alive

Ragged lines of ragged grey
Skeletons, they shuffle away
Shouting guards and smoking guns
Will cut down the unlucky ones

I clutch the wire fence until my fingers bleed
A wound that will not heal, a heart that cannot feel
Hoping that the horror will recede
Hoping that tomorrow, we'll all be freed

Sickness to insanity
Prayer to profanity
Days and weeks and months go by
Don't feel the hunger, too weak to cry

I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gate
Are the liberators here, do I hope or do I fear?
For my father and my brother, it's too late
But I must help my mother stand up straight

Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings to survive?

Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings to survive?

I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gate
Are the liberators here, do I hope or do I fear?
For my father and my brother, it's too late
But I must help my mother stand up straight

Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings to survive?

Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings to survive?

It was the fall of '74 when I first listened to this tune, part of one of those promo collections albums labels used to put out. I must have played it a dozen times in a row, such potent rock.

Fast forward 50 years and tonight was the first time I listened to the alternative version. Mighty fine as well.

It seems I most always prefer a band's early work.

When I got my first job, in 1977 (I turned 16 that June), all of my friends wouldn't stop signing it at/to me. They were all 1-3 years older than me, so they were making fun that I was finally getting a job.

I'd already known Rush by then though, as I'd bought All the World's a Stage when it dropped. But I still think of them every time I hear it. I'm still friends with a handful of that same gang of misfits, believe it or not.

This was taken somewhere in that general area of time (maybe 78/79'ish?). I'm the one with the 'fro. There were 30-40 of us that hung out in that spot, almost nightly. No shortage of trouble, and many visits by the local po-lice.

Woot.
