I'm watching the televised memorial services right now and have been watching some of the documentaries about 9/11 this week. My mother had passed a few months prior to the tragedy and I remember thinking at the time I was somewhat glad she didn't know about it.
I was dispatching for a limousine service at the time down in Miami. We mainly dealt with people in the music industry along with other stars and high end client's transportation needs all along the eastern seaboard. I remember coming in that morning around 11am and checking flight tracker, which shows a map of the United States along with every flight that is currently in the air. The entire airspace was empty...
A lot of our drivers had to do services extending out of Florida for that week.
A little over two weeks prior I had to release the driver who was supposed to pick up Aaliyah at Opa Locka airport, where she was due for arrival from a video shoot in the Bahamas. He had driven her the entire week prior
throughout Miami and when I told him he was released he asked, "why?". He cried when I told him she was just in a fatal plane crash. I really thought that was going to be one of my saddest moments on the job.
Boy, was I tremendously wrong.
