The neighbor my wife walks the dogs with was diagnosed with lung cancer a few weeks ago. She is 70+ so she has Medicare plus a UHC add-on plan. She has no savings and minimal SS so everything is paid for.
After weeks of tests they came up with a plan, radiation starting today, a break, then chemo starting a couple of weeks later. Yesterday someone called to say UHC changed their minds and wouldn't cover the radiation part. They had her down for something called Proton Beam radiation but UHC don't like that because it's more expensive. They will cover some cheaper type of radiation that's more invasive and won't work as well. They put off the radiation until Thursday so the medics have 48 hours to try and pressurize UHC but if that doesn't work they have to go ahead.
They gave her a 7% survival rate, now this.
