    Good morning, hitt :) That's a plan.
I got the monitor and computer plugged in and cables routed through our desk. It’s downloading windows updates now. I’m waiting until that’s all done before connecting the external hard drives and stuff.

I don’t know anything yet on the data recovery. I assume all I’m going to get is files from the old hard drive so it should be easy enough to just put the pictures and files into folders. In the past when I had a working hard drive, I used acronis true image and just cabled the new hard drive in line with the existing one and it did a mirror image copy. I have to figure out what I’m going to do about MS Office also. I was running a really old version we bought a long time ago but I may have to pay for a subscription if they don’t have the home and student version any more.
I gave up on Office. They blocked the old version I got years ago. Sneaky tactics. To activate it on a new PC you have to use a product code which is 5 blocks of numbers, but the old versions only have 4 blocks. Took me quite a while to find the product code and I was pretty mad. They do have a free on-line version but it's a major pain to use, and some cheaper versions, but I was tired of being MS'ed around.

Someone here suggested WPS which is a free alternative. There are a handful of minor differences in which button you hit to do certain things, like copy and paste are in a different place on the window. They hit you with ads for their paid version, but the average home user will never use the advanced features.

    Hoping all goes well.

We use Word and Excel a lot. Best buy was running a deal on the home version for &99 so I did that. The download and install was easy. I set up the 2tb external drive to backup weekly and am transferring some stuff to the new drive. I have an old 1TB that was supposed to be our old backup and getting certain files from it then I’ll disconnect it and put it in storage. I don’t want three external drives connected. I have one just for the wife’s pictures so they don’t clog up the internal drive.

    You've been busy.
It turns out that the wife was saving her pictures on the external drive so we still have all of them. I’m starting to wonder now if I should have waited to send off the old hard drive until we saw if we were actually missing anything.

Would have been a good idea.

The wife is in a grumpy mood. I just carried about ten boxes and tubs of Xmas stuff up from the basement. And she thinks I have a lot of vaping stuff. She has a 14’ set of shelves floor to ceiling for decorations and stuff.

Guess you didn’t get any help.
