Are we having an egg shortage? Price jumped almost $3 a carton here.

Besides your typical inflation, there has been a decrease in the egg supply due to bird flu. I read the other day that in some locations, eggs are nearly $9 per dozen. The recent laws requiring only the sale of cage free eggs has a role in that.

They are still selling the reg ones here, not all are cage free so I haven't heard about that. Is that only certain areas? I prefer cage free cause I am a softie but I can't be paying $10 a doz, will have to stick with egg white powder and skip baking, I guess.

They still have both kinds here too but I've been getting cage free for years after seeing a TV show about factory farms. Couldn't bring myself to be part of that level of cruelty. I stopped eating bacon too. That was even uglier than the egg farms. After that the factory farming industry paid the politicians to criminalize taking videos of factory farms. Keep the proles in the dark to maximize profits.

We got 8". And the plow left a 2' ridge of snow at the top of the driveway. I got the deck and vehicles cleared and a narrow path up the driveway so I can go out later to clear out the ridge at the top. Have to do that soon because it's made up of chunks and it will turn hard as rock if I leave it.

The storm moved north at the last minute just far enough to put us in the heavy snow band, but not far enough to put us in the ice band.

I feel your pain. I cleared our driveway and three neighbors. Right as I was finishing, the plow ran down both sides and blocked the driveways again. Then I had to load up the snowblower and go do the in-laws driveway while my wife went to pick up her father. My brother in law didn’t touch anything. He could have at least cleaned the steps.

Unfortunately, it is probably worse than what you saw. I had a front row seat to poultry farms/plants as a child since my father installed and maintained equipment in plants.

    Bet you're glad that's done.

Waving Hi to you great folks from my iPad.:) Can I get a Hi. ????
    Hi, Fran :)
We got maybe two inches of snow earlier today. It's flurrying again but shouldn't amount to much more.
I finally got around to washing up some of those tester bottles that I thought I might get to a few days ago.

Hope you're staying warm and cozy!

Definitely! My boss texted everyone and said we’re going to do a late start tomorrow at 9. I am really astounded at having today off then a late start. Another first.

No, it's only a few states that have mandated cage free. I don't remember which ones. Eggs here are about $4.59, regular. Cage free doesn't mean no cages, just bigger cages. What people think about when they say cage free is actually pasture raised birds.

    Egg Terminology

Let’s start with the basics. You can find caged, cage-free and free-range on store shelves and here’s a rundown of those terms.

Caged Eggs: About 90% of eggs in the U.S. come from caged hens. The birds are confined to cages for their egg-laying lives and are given 67 square inches each. They eat a corn or soy diet.

Cage-Free Eggs: These birds have more room than caged hens, as they are each provided with less than 1 square foot. They are confined to the barns and eat a diet of corn or soy.

Free-Range Eggs: These hens are allotted less than 2 square feet per hen which is more than caged and cage-free hens, but don’t go outdoors too often. They are usually fed a corn or soy based diet.

    So What Is Pasture-Raised?

These hens are allotted at least 108 square feet per hen. They eat a combination of carefully balanced supplemental feed and whatever they can find in the dirt when they go outdoors including grass, worms and bugs. They are able to leave the barns early in the morning and are called back before nightfall.

My sister has a small baking business and regularly uses flaxseed eggs in cookies. The results are good. I don't know how well they work in cakes.

I don't use eggs that much, as I rarely bake and don't eat them often. Although I did have a couple this morning as I had some leftover from the holidays. There are local people who raise chickens who sell them a bit cheaper. If I used more, I'd go that route but it's too much hassle for as seldom as I use them.

I went to two auto parts stores on the way home and neither one had the true fuel that I run in my snowblower. A small engine shop mechanic I know suggested using it in small engines that aren’t used regularly. It’s good for two years once it’s opened. I used the rest of what I had to do the in-laws driveway. I checked and amazon has it so just ordered a couple cans there.

    Glad you found some.
