I was 32 and had smoked a pack- pack and a half (or as much as three packs occasionally) steadily for 15 years. By the end of a day I was wheezing a bit and I was having heart issues due to mild arrhythmia. I would get little aches and pains in chest and was concerned it was the beginning of "something serious". Doctor's really weren't very concerned because I was young and mostly "healthy" (though overweight) and told me to quit smoking and the issue would go away. So I switched to ultra-lights in an effort to wean myself off smokes. Which only led me to smoke more, turned into a real chainsmoker for a while there. Did that for a couple years while still feeling worse and being less and less satisfied with smoking. I hated the whole fire safe additive thing, that really ruined cigarettes, made them burn for crap and taste like crap.
At 34 I had been hearing more about e-cigs, from various sources, had 3 in-laws start vaping together and making liquid and everything.
I bought a Puff Brand cigalike and tried it out, was kinda happy with it but could not imagine paying $7+ for them as they didn't last as long for me as I wanted. Did that a few times on a whim when it would strike me and I would impulse buy in a carryout. Then I made it known that I was going to "look into this vaping thing" and my wife wanted to quit smoking as well, shortly after that her family gave us a gallon ziplock bag half full of cartos, tanks, and spare parts consisting of 510 cartos, carto tanks, vivi nova tanks, and a few other things. Also gave us an e-go copy and a very small selection of liquids from a couple local shops ( both of which have since closed ). I got my battery a month before we really wanted to quit and before my wife got one, dual used heavily for that month then with my wife cut down to a couple cigs a day, and it was a bit of a struggle at first, common story, to find a liquid that was satisfying, both in mimicking smoking and nic strength, had to learn.
The liquid we came across that really did the trick was a Chai Tea Latte from Mountain Oak Vapors sold at a local shop. Took about a month before we found it, but at that point I was all about vaping and new that cigs were in my past.
I smoked cigs rarely here and there, 14 the first year I was vaping. Then I came home from work early one morning to my wife passed out on the couch with a cigarette burned out in her hand and a pack next to her. She had been buying packs pretty steadily and keeping them hidden from me. I can't express how disappointed I was about that. I smoked over 2 packs that next year while she stopped hiding them from me. She still smokes now, but loves her vape, she smokes while she drinks. And she drinks a lot
After my first year using egos and upgrading to a spinner, I was looking online at new gear (this is about the same time I came to ecf) and saw this new thing called a Sub-Tank from Kanger. I never truly liked the tight draw of the MTL tanks I was using so this peaked my interest, more airflow, easier draw. I bought the Kanger and an Istick 30w. Match made in heaven, I was finally actually satisfied and happy with vaping. I still smoked a couple cigs after that but I called it quit and felt better health and mentality-wise. I smoked 1 cig this year in june when I had jury duty and had not wanted to bring my large vape setup through metal detectors. Turns out the guards were very understanding and I brought my vape with me the following days. It had been quite a while, maybe a year, since I'd had the cig before that. I know I will not go back to smoking, I have no desire and quite a bit of revulsion thinking about it. All the things I used to love about smoking gross me out now. The taste, smell, ashes, how they make me feel; these were positives before but negatives now. And this pleases me a great deal.
Now I have been making liquid for a year, and that was a huge game changer as well. I enjoy the liquid I make more than many I bought over those years and don't intend to stop.
