What are you good random folks up to this evening?

Sitting here with a window open. Late last night there 2 large explosions in the neighborhood. Sounded to me like the noise you get when electric supply transformers blow. People closer to the source thought they were gunshots and called the cops. Someone else told the cops they heard 4 gunshots shortly afterwards. Someone looked out of the window after the first bang and thought they saw a flash in someone's back yard when the second one happened, but the folks who lived there denied everything. The neighborhood was swarming with cops and fire around midnight. They couldn't find anything.

They came back this morning to investigate in daylight. Someone said people in the city have been building homemade fireworks recently, like bangers but with a large quantity of explosive. They call them grenades. Some people have got injured. Somebody spoke to a cop this morning and the cop said they didn't have justification to search the house where the flash was seen and we would probably never know what happened unless they do it again. So I'm listening.

Yes, that sort of thing can be dangerous for sure.

Last week a loud noise made us jump. We thought it could have been a transformer explosion and expected to hear police sirens responding, but nothing happened. We had no explanation for what we'd heard, then I caught this on the news: Earthquake? Meteor? Residents report bang, shaking, flash in the sky (telegram.com)

I didn't get to mix over the weekend, but I'm off for the rest of the week except for some minor bits that I can do from home. I'm hearing the call of empty, clean bottles saying 'fill me!'. I'm Ok with that, those little voices could be leading me astray in other ways.

Crikey, is this true? I am sorry, if so.

Yes - It' true . . . So sad and a great loss for ECF community, especially given how much she put herself out there for so many in so many different ways . . . @JCinFLA mentored many newbies and even more experienced vapors (like Me) with her expertise and taught many people about DIY and suggested what equipment might be useful to those who were lost. . . More importantly, She was and still is such a "Mench" . . . Thankfully, we have become Friends in RL . . . Just Sayin' . . .

    @Opinionated . . .

Have you thought about one of those portable radiator heaters . . . Personally - IMHO - Better & safer then a kerosene heaters . . . I've had the portable heaters in the past and they worked great for heating a room . . . They vary in size and cost - and thankfully do not use a lot of electricity . . . You can find them at Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, and Amazon too . . . Hope this one helpful . . . Just Sayin' . . .

    .

And DO keep in mind that any heater that uses flame needs good ventilation. Flame depletes oxygen, and may also have toxic fumes, carbon monoxide...

I very much agree. For living spaces I would definitely go electric. I don’t know much about them but have heard some of the newer stuff out doesn’t use a ton of electricity like the old ones used to.

I'm sorry if I'm being too nosy but could the one that is hard wired be repaired or is it beyond that. I just hate the thought of someone having to be that uncomfortable in their own home.

I think Opinionated has gone on her trip to the PO and WalMart. Hopefully we’ll get some news on a heater when she’s back.

Heater post.. I kept what people said in mind and went electric..

I went to Wally world and Lowes and got one of those radiant heater's for the living room.. it's working pretty well so far. :) it's not toasty toasty but it's keeping the temperature warmer.. probably get a smaller second one next shopping trip for the colder temps later in the winter but I'm happy with the temp this is keeping so far..

@hittman - Yes, the big and broken heater in the living room can be fixed, the motor and blower can be replaced but I have to hire someone to do the work, as well as order the parts so it's something I'll have to save for.. i'll have it fixed by next year..

I'm sorry if I didn't get everyone who responded to me quoted but I couldn't get through the thread since I left for the day without tears, apparently.. so may have missed a quote tag or two.

I would have been back earlier but I got myself in a comfortable position to relieve some pain and fell asleep.. lol. Now I'm awake in the middle of the night.. hahaha

    My love to all...

We have a dual control electric blanket and it is wonderful. One we had to send back had some kind of plastic in it and had to send back as it made you sweat (nasty).

I’m very glad you got something to relieve the cold temps somewhat. Are you sure it’s enough? Are your water pipes protected? It would be a real bit-h to have your water lines freeze.

I’m glad you got something to at least take the edge off for now.

I borrowed DD’s very large air freshener last spring and used it all summer to keep cool enough. It blows a good bit of cold air. I’m using mine now which is half the size and doesn’t blow much much cold air at all. I don’t think opening a window at the coldest temps will work that well. I’m going to try turning my unit up to max first. It’s just bit a noisy when turned up.
