Jeremy,

I watched Rip's video on the Pancake Wick. I don't see any real advantage to the more conventional method of wicking a raised coil level lower juice deck (kayfun style) Atty.
However the portion of the Pancake that sticks up (the upper 180 degrees of the pancake) seem like it would not be very functional.

Excellent then, I will give it a try on my next kayfun rebuild.

At the same time I never said that it would work good regardless if its cotton or rayon.. Just because he took a few vapes off it doesn't necessarily mean it will work well in the long term. Most likely its just a gimmick for a video; not a revelation.

Mostly anything you do with cotton can be done with rayon.. Doesn't mean its a good idea...

Admittedly I fast forwarded to the wick and turned it off.

The more I think about it, the dumber it seems. The only way the top half of the "pancake" gets juice is if it robs it from the coil.

There will be little to no gunking, I hope, or there's no way it would have gone that long and still be a good vape.. It may look like cotton after 15ml... maybe if its a gunkier juice.

My 180ml wick&coil of VG tobacco had no gunking and only a light carbon layer.

For readers-
We are not running these so long to see how much we can vape it with chunks of gunk. We are vaping so long trying to get gunk to form.. If there's gunk it will taste bad.. My vape tasted good at 180ml with an essentially clean coil.
I'm pretty sure that it won't be gunked. All my previous wicks were replaced because I felt I wanted to or because I forgot my tank was empty and got a nasty dry hit. It was probably just the taste of the coil but I would rewick anyway. This time I've been careful not to let the tank dry out and it has been working fine. Is the taste as fresh as with a new wick? Probably not but not bad either.

I've been vaping exclusively a diy for the last two weeks or so which is a simple blend of 70%VG and menthol crystals at 18mg. It's a perfectly translucid liquid, no sweeteners or any other additive which has always kept my coil clean. I expect to find a black coil and a yellow wick with one or two brown streaks..... However I've never come this far so my curiosity will be more about the wick structure itself. Will it be still consistent? Will it break apart in pieces? How will it look after running under water?

I had the same coil for 4 months and all it lost was it's shine. It was dull and grey but worked perfectly still. Let's see how the wick will work out after a month or so :)

Tony

Just a thought for the folks who get dry hits now and then, I raise my hand as being one who doesn't pay attention to my atty's as I should and run them dry as I just did, again..... To get past a few yucky hits after I refill I blow back through my tanks rather then draw, you can do the same if you get the nutty taste on a new wick. Sometimes the taste is fine on the first hit after refilling, sometimes not. Looks funny and puts a ton of vapor in the air but it works for me, YMMV

ETA: When I say tank I mean like in my ProTank....

Yeah slick, I know what your talking about blowing through it.. Vapor comes out the air hole instead...

I thought about making a video just to show how Much chain vaping rayon can take... Blow and blow and blow..on and on.. To show how it keeps up... Anytime I try to chain it to oblivion to see how it keeps up; I just can't go anymore.. When wicked right it can put anyone down.. Just gotta keep enough juice in the tank.

Hey how about a competition with kogendo see who comes out with a wick left and how much more rayon can keep going for minutes/ hours past cotton..

Gimmick. Look at the way he tilts that thing. No doubt he is breaking the vapor lock and nearly flooding the thing. Only reason why it doesn't flood is because he is vaping at 50w!

I don't see how that wick method would work in my older kayfun 3.1. I just don't think that there is enough juice channel to fill the barrel up to the wick in an efficient manner. But hey what do I know.

If the wick doesn't touch the barrel it should stay a little warmer and preform a little better especially with the axial grease that Rip uses and calls it e-juice.

Hey now! I use that axel grease for juice too! Well, not the same axel grease he uses, but my own.

Update: package still stuck in Lisbon so current wick 156ml and counting.... This is getting scary... I will need to post pictures of the wick once I disassemble the atty or nobody will believe me. In three days it will be a month since I last rewicked... :)

Nah... you are fine at only 156ml. I stopped counting on my TOBH... it has went all energizer bunny on me... just keeps going and going and going.

The more I think about it, the dumber it seems. The only way the top half of the "pancake" gets juice is if it robs it from the coil.

Yup. I have been using a single tail for a while... and a trimmed tail at that! I just do this because so many DANG atty's place the posts so far to the left and the right that I didn't want to deal with a tail that was bent right up against the wall... so I just started cutting them a little off from flush with the coil and flowering them out. Seem to work just fine to me... I normally only run 0.2-0.5 at 50-65W though... nothing 'serious'.

Are you using a bad gunker, similar to a net?

If not your density is probably too low, not in good contact with the entire coil; allowing the coil to overheat - which causes gunk.

Also leaves you with a clean wick and gunked coil.

You'll want to wick it till you taste rayon, then you know your just over the mark and can pull strands out or rewick a little less... Just under the threshold of tasting it more than a few hits... (When perfect there is no taste.)

Using a coffee flavor at high wattage. I know the wicking is fine just the coil builds up the black gunk on it after a few days but the rayon is still good.

Oh, nothing more you can do with the wick? You think its just the coffee flavor.. It just sounds like the juice may not be that bad with the wick looking so good..

Possibly your overpowering your air flow causing overheat and gunk?

Just trying to help you get the most out of it possible Necrotic. :)

I know coffee is a bit of a gunker for coils. Also am able to run about 35 ml through it before I replace. Usually use 7 ml a day.

Well I'm imagining the classic thick black syrupy coffee used in various jokes over the years. Looking like chunky motor oil..

I know its not that bad but I can see how coffee flavoring could be a problem.. 35ml is probably considered good then:)

- Shameless plug; I updated my avi, modernized it. Lol :)
Yeah, it was thick and black, but I filtered it in my Aeropress a bunch of times, so at least it wasn't "chunky."

I think that it would be much better to drink daily 3 or 4 Italian expressos and vape something different. Latest studies reveal that that amount of coffee reduces the risk of heart stroke.

I wonder what 7 on a daily basis do...
