I haven't had any burnt pieces of RxW. Not even close.... I do give mine a quick cold water, then hot water rinse, and then l gently pulse the coil in 5 second bursts (using a battery that is not fully charged). (like MacTechVpr ^^ writes about in his blog...).
The coil gets really hot while doing this, so you need to blow on it. Well, I got tired of blowing on it... So I started using a handheld fan... Works great. I do get the "rings", after several dry burns and a lot of juice: My current setups (2) are close to a month old and @ ~ 5mls/day. I really don't notice a difference in performance because of the rings (slightly discoloration on the wick itself)..

Happy holidays to you too, MTV, thanks for all your contributions this year!

That's a nice wind there b4F and a good strategy.

One of the obstacles to really getting folks to benefit from t.m.c.'s frankly is trying to have them unlearn everything they learnt on regular winds and torching or dry burning the bejezzus out of everything.

Truth is you don't want to overheat the wire (it compromises the oxidation), you don't want to cook the juice (just adds to accretion) and you don't want to do both of these things and scorch the juice into Nextel. Once it accumulates and hardens it turns into a rocky mess intermeshed with the weave. That will reduce the efficiency of the wick/coil as it accumulates.

However, if you rinse before accretion sets in and delicately dry out the wick at low power this will pretty much get rid of most of it. Vaping some straight vg thru will take care of what may remain. In fact just vaping some VG will keep the wick relatively clean, period. In Protanks I recommend blowing out as much as possible and then using this strategy.

The twisted center post three-lead I've been posting here and elsewhere is running more than 4-weeks in a Mega with highly pigmented vg and that's about as good as it gets in a clearo. So keeping it clean in a dripper should be a breeze.

We don't have to overpower ceramic weave to keep it clean. But keeping it clean keeps up performance and ensures it's durability.

Good luck all and Happy Holidays!

I would do that as well : drop cold water on the coil and RxW 2mm; use a drained battery, and slowly pulse fired, and blow on it to keep it cool. Hmmm? But there were a few times, I just hit the button to cook it all off. :?: *Scratches head* I bet that right there is what messed me up, and would turn the coil a rusty looking color as well.

I'll try again because I'm not ready to give up on it. I'm sure I did something wrong. Thanks B4F, and Mac. I learned a little more about RxW.

Very great suggestion and explanation. I dilute my flavored liquid with straight VG, as much at 50-75%... as do a lot of other reonauts... and on my 2nd reo, I run straight VG and drip on flavors when I want to, which is rarely. It's amazing how long the flavor will still be present, using unflavored VG dilution. And, the unflavored VG definitely helps with delivering the flavor and keeping it from getting too gunky, whilecleansing the wick... like you mention. I've noticed that when it gets discolored (like the picture above, which I probably waited too long to clean/dryburn), and I use a higher dilution of VG in the next refill, it is cleaner and performs better after the next dry burn. I think the performance is still great and hanging on, strictly because of the VG.. while, the unflavored rig keeps performing better.

Absolutely. And while we're on the subject of Fe, that is another reason we DON'T want to overcook our coils. Too high a temp will displace alumina with ferric oxidation. An area of interest and experiment for me. Another good reason to try not to overpower our builds into an impossibly pristine state. Hey look, there's nothing like a good broke in black iron skillet. That's really what we're aiming for here with alumina. Nice even and evenly radiating. Not accumulating gunk or rusting red. So we pamper it just like the surface on that skillet. Wash off, scrape off or burn off too much of that seasoning and there goes the vape with it.

Good luck and Happy Holidays.

p.s. I really like this analogy. It's about the best yet why we build tension. To season that skillet.

Here's a series of 4 photos.

1. dirty coil and RxW, this is a combo that has been running for 6 weeks.

2. after a rinse and dry burn, notice the dark rings on the wick.

3. A little touch up with a lighter (torch type)

4. clean coil and wick ready.

That's the ticket FB. I love KGD, like cotton, rayon and all the synthetics. Even silica high-temp weave has it's moments in the repertoire. But ceramic fiber just keeps on giving! And it just seems to get better like a good brandy. It's the baseline I try to pass on to all the up and comers starting vaping along with a t.m.c. so they have a good measure of what's beyond.

Plus the fact that I'm a lazy .... and hate to wick-a-lot (truth be told).

Good luck all and Happy Holidays.

Mac, since I have been building tension coils with your Pin Vice method all other coil building devices have been S#** canned. So simple yet so perfect:)
As a matter of fact, I'm out the door right now to get a pin vise.

FB, what kind of juice do you run to get that kind of performance??

-----
Edit: Well, I was out the door... until I decided to call Ace Hardware about the Pin Vise.
"Sir, we carry the product on our website, but don't have in the store". I just hung up. :grr:

Almost always 100% VG and every kind of flavoring. I mix my own for tests. But I rely on a few common very well known and popular makers, e.g. Halo, avejuice, Johnson Creek, which new vapers are likely to encounter. Of these JC by far has the most difficult pigmentation and chemistry to deal with particularly in the Red Oak VG line. I use these variants to do blends and even concentrations to test a variety of wick and coil arrangements, as you've seen me designing some of my own to experiment with the outside edges of performance. From there ed it's easy to find the middle ground of performance. And that's my goal to find the simplest baseline for new vapers and encourage them through this to embrace the vaping lifestyle! Once you have those basic skills you can find workarounds for anything. Even all the mediocre stuff that's thrown at us.

Thanks for your real interest. It's appreciated and makes the effort worthwhile.

Good luck all and Happy Holidays.

Mac,
Johnson Creek is ok. I once had an affair with Silverthorn and Vanda. Silverthorn is an authentic pipe tobacco with a turkish blend, and is still one of my favorites. JC's policy is awesome, and Debbie (customer service) is a riot to talk too. JC's juices do gunk up though, and I had to look for other alternatives.

HHV (Heather's Heaveanly Vapes) make some really good stuff as well IF you like sweet tobacco flavors. Legend is purely a Cigar flavor with a authentic Cherry note. Very good after dinner. ;)

--------

Beast!,
I'm gonna try NT Virus soon. Talked to Clark the other day just to learn about Nicoticket juices. We talked for 30min, and I was very impressed with how cordial and professional he is. Gonna order many blends from NT in a couple of weeks.

------

Mac and Beast:
I'm quite confused about running 100% VG through to help clear the coils and RxW. Always thought a thinner liquid like PG would be better.

:tumble:

I'm not using it for the cleaning power, I leave that to Mac to comment. I run it for two reasons, Cleanses the palate and cost a LOT less , I mean a lot, like buy another Reo. I just mixed up another 250ml of unflavored, total cost under $6.

I typically have 4 mods loaded and ready, 2 will always be loaded with unflavored.

It still amazes me the amount of markup on the flavored juices in the BM stores. 15ml @ 15.95! over $1.00 p/ml vs. .04 per/ml of DIY juice!!
