I remember reading a post by someone who seems to have good knowledge about batteries saying that AW protected ones are better than IMR's for voltage regulated mods simply because they last longer while there's no difference in performance.
IMRs are definately better(in terms of both safety and performance) for mechanical mods, but since the current flow in VV mods are always regulated protected ones with more mah rating may be a wiser choice.

It made sense to me enough but I'm not saying this from experience.
I also read here and there that mah ratings on AW batteries are pretty accurate while other brands seem to always exagerate the mah ratings on their batteries.

I use AW IMR 18350's on my cutlass(previous design), vape around 2ml a day, and they last me more than two days. I think I'll probably try ICR's when I get the new design of RSM.

Just a quick note protected batterys won't let you overpower your carto like IMR's will. I use IMR's and my mom uses protected 18350s. We both use 1.5 ohm DC cartos and we both happen to like 4.7-4.8v. Sometimes a carto will drop in resistance and when this happens on the RSM with protected batterys drops power after about 1 second of the button being pressed. If we swap the IMR batterys in that carto will still work fine but the protected batterys tend to require a voltage drop to keep using that carto.

For example my mom brought me her RSM last night saying it wasn't working. I tested the battery voltage and they were fine fired it up and noticed it only powered for about a second. So I took the carto off and tested it and it metered out at 1.2-1.3 ohms. Put it back on and dialed the voltage back and it wouldn't stay fired unless I dropped it to about 4.4v That same carto worked fine in my IMR powered Cutlass and worked in hers when I put the IMR's in. This has happened a couple times in the past. So if you want to use 1.5 ohm DCC's at 4.6+v use IMR's

As for battery life . With IMR 18350s (700 MAH) I can get 6-8 ml before I have to change batterys. (I have 3 sets 1 set always gets about 8 ml the other 2 6-7) AW IMR 16340's are 550 mah so I would estimate if AW uses the same calcs to rate both that they would last about 78% as long or 4.6-6.24 ml

There're some interesting graphs at super-t website comparing test results of protected and imr batteries.

AW16340Comparison.jpg

ICR 123/16340 rated 750mah tested only 601mah
vs
IMR 16340 rated 550mah tested at 575mah

only 25mah difference in reality? hmm...

there's bunch of other comparisons at super-t if anyone's interested:

At RTDVapor, the IMR's and the icr's are right about the same price. I usually vape a 3.0 ohm carto in a tank at around 5-5.5V, and I vape quite a lot.

The IMR's are 550mah, and the icr's are 750mah. I'm leaning toward the icr's. What should I do, what should I do, what should I do?

As I understand from Cappy, all of the new models will all take 16340, and, as you know, I have 2 Destroyers on their way.

Ahoy, good morning all, working on my first coffee of the morning, arrr

As for batteries, I've again designed the new mods to take UF/TF 16340 as they are as usual the largest batteries of the class I can find, but the difference in sizes between them and the smaller batteries is only 1mm so I am not even bothering to send magnet spacers with them this time (I hope this doesn't come back and bite me).

I have been using protected batteries for a long time now due to the peace of mind I get. The Switching regulator I use needs 5v minimum to operate which means that until each battery drops below 2.5V (remember they are stacked) the regulator will keep trying to work. This is the lowest recommended voltage for the AW IMR's (and some people recommend a much higher minimum voltage).

To avoid the whole problem of needing to monitor the battery voltage I just simply use protected batteries. I do not care if I have to recharge them a bit sooner than other types, they are disposable items just like atomizers and I am going with what I see as the safest and most hassle free alternative.

Decorating the house for Christmas here. Lovely spiked eggnog :toast: and some eggnog diy juice to vape. Christmas music filling the house and daydreaming about the "Captain" and "1st mate" Destroyers COMING ON MONDAY!!! I love it that I get my mail in the morning!!!

These mods are busting out on Monday, not waiting until Christmas, no, not us!! :D

That's cheating Jewels! Supposed to wait till at least Christmas Eve!

Thanks Sallie! I traded the one I got for a stone pink one but I don't know... I might try to trade that one. I wanted something sparkly! I just can't make up my mind... but - I did get one on my first try so that's good!

Sparkly would be nice, but pink stone sounds gorgeous. I'm looking forward to my batch coming up. I always forget to be around right at sale time, and frenzies make me crazed. Getting mine (at least my first) through a nice leisurely PM process is very appealing to me. :) I might join the frenzy later and do the trade thing after I have one that I was able to take my time deciding over.
