how skilled do u have to be to make one?

Well, if you have any wood kit building experience it will be pretty easy. If not, you would have to be able to solder a couple connections. Be able to check the square of the box and sand edges if needed, and sand surfaces smooth and so they fit well. Glue the tops and bottoms together and then some kind of wood finish.

Not too terrible, I used machines to make all the hard cuts, holes and edges to keep it pretty easy.

Did u ever answer my engraving/personalizing question? and pics of your other woodworking products?

Sorry, I don't have anything at my disposal that would allow me to engrave except to do it by hand, and that would make the price of a mod soar, plus take up way too much time.

No, I really don't have pics, I had to pick up a camera when I started doing this so I could take close ups. Altho I've been working with wood for decades, the most fun I had was building R/C racing boats and selling them, some of them were huge! Thats back when I was stationed in San Diego....kinda miss that place.

arrr ... :)

Thanks for the vid, looks like you've left enough material around the edges for shaping or cutting like your finished ones. I was wondering about that.

You bet, If you look close at the vid, you can see the corners are still square, you can round them, bevel them or do what ever you feel like doing... lots of room for the imagination.

Im still considering if i could do justice to a DIY kit--it definitely intrigues me

You would definitely need to be able to do simple soldering, aside from that anyone could easily make one.

I was under the impression that they would be more popular than they have turned out to be.

Could it be ..

1) Price still too high?

2) Need bigger wood selection?

3) It's the new millennia you scurvy dog, nobody 'Builds' things anymore!

4) Who knows, it's a mystery....

Opinions anyone? :D

I personally think it is fair considering the work you put into them before hand and the cost of the parts

Maybe? I definitely want one. Not sure If I want to grab one of the ones currently up though? Can we still custom request DIY woods?

A trip to the modders forum will say otherwise :)

Cap'n Bri,

1) No, your prices for the kits are super-reasonable.

2) In my case, YES. I'm lusting for a bubinga body with rosewood end caps.
Closest I can get in the kit selection is mahogany with walnut ends,
and I haven't yet been willing to accept that, even though it's
financially advisable.

3) It's the new millennium, you scurvy dog---EVERYBODY darned well
better start learning/remembering how to build things by hand!

4) Yes, whatever we say, however much we know, finally it's ALL still a mystery.
