Hey all-

I'm sure this has been out there for years n years n years in reo world . But I was having trouble with one of my grandes - firing was kind of intermittent , I kept applying noalox like a dope, and sometimes I would have to press button really hard and sometimes a light press would fire it - well,

I finally remembered that when I hammered out the on/off safety tiny metal piece on a different reo I had it worked much better. And I just did it on this one and OMG it is working so much better - fires everytime no matter what. It is just really working nice. Anyone else that has done this I'm sure can testify to it...

I don't know how rob makes the new ones - might be an entire different on/off safety configuration but for some of the older models that have that little metal piece inside the delrin button I found it more trouble than what it's worth -

This is just my experience - I can never advocate taking off a safety feature - if your reo working fine then "if it ain't broke don't fix it" meaning don't mess around with removing it - but if you have an older style reo with a delrin fire button and running into some trouble with intermittent firing, having to press button harder often consider this option after you have cleaned it thoroughly and have already gone through checklist of other possibilities -

All of my Reos (2 with a third shipping tomorrow) have the new SO contacts but I have never had an issue, I use the safety every time I re-wick. The first time I re-wicked I hit the button while threading in the cotton, ruined the wick and burnt the crap out of my finger tip. .555ohm coil + fresh VTC5 gets very hot very fast when dry; I have the scar to prove it.

I really appreciate the locking pin as I carry both grands in my pockets and wouldn't like to be working and having one activate. If I try to vape and it won't with a light push on the button, I just use my thumb and rotate it fully and never had a problem. I am guilty of not bathing these very often, but haven't had a button hang.

The lock should be either on or off. If the button is depressing and the firing pin is contacting the battery intermittent fire issues are caused by oxidized contacts.

I didn't notice any mention of roughing up the contact before applying noalox either. I thought that was a recommended practice prior to gooping?

Good point on first post filthy.

Ive owned reos for 4 years and 2 years with that lock thing removed and never had it fire. With it off it takes quit a bit of directed pressure to fire the reo-seriously. leave it in unlocked position and put in pocket and see if it fires--mine never did...if your a construction guy and compressing that pocket alot yeah it might.

By no means advocating it as some huge fix. I just found myself applying noalox too often on one. and mine the way I hold it, when I press it down normally it kind of almost twists into the lock position. So I just had to do away with it.

However, I didnt listen to my entire original post, that all other things should be checked first, like cleaning your mod (which I did), and checking its basic overall health. I happened to have a new spring around. which is super easy to install. One screw. I put the new spring in and along with taking out the safety pin in the firing pin this thing is as smooth as butter.

I would imagine can reinstall the safety guard, worst case buy a delrin button from Rob.

In no way shape or form am i advocating this as a fix or something that should be done. I have no authority to do that. I know a bunch of other reonauts that have them out. I have them out. and I am just throwing it out there as something to investigate if you perhaps own an older reo or just have tried everything and looking for something else to experiment with.

thats all.
