I'm having an impossible time when it comes to soldering paper clips, safety pins, or hypodermic needle to the center tube and base. Seems like the solder just rolls away and falls off lol. I've watched the tutorials on soldering around the ECF, but I'm still flailing.

Any tips from those that used a soldered repairable?

Cyrus Vap, now if you laugh at this post I wont blame you - it's been a long time ago and things were not as advanced back in the day - That was basically the start of the CE2 in my opinion. Anyway, this is how I made the solder stuck to stainless steel. Click here

Sorry, let me elaborate a bit further. I wrap a thin copper winding around whatever you need to solder - try to get it tight. I always bend the tip of the hypodermic needles in a "U" shape so that it will "hook onto" the solder once done. Once you have wrapped the copper winding all you do is add a bit of flux, heat it up and touch with lead free solder. It works very easy on the copper and flows all around the winding. Hope this helps.

no laughing matter, that looks sick!

now I just have to figure out where to get copper wire lol

do you prefer the butane torch thingies to soldering irons? I saw one at Home Depot for 10 bucks

Yes I do, the ones you can use as a butane torch or soldering iron. Opens so much more avenues..... :p

I don't solder anymore however. I have converted to something different: Click here

Sorry for the machine gun posts lol

Wonder if I could just strip the original CE2 wires and use them instead of the copper wire? Copper wire seems to be kind of expensive at home depot and I can't seem to find a narrow gauge in anything less than 10000 feet lol

Cyrus, almost all electrical equipment is wired with multiple strands of very thin copper wire. I usually just strip any old wire from an electrical plug and use that. Your local hardware shop should sell it by the metre.

I normally use silver solder, with silver flux… either .999 pure silver (it’s softer) or .925 sterling. You need over 1300⁰ depending on the hardness of the solder so a torch is necessary. I can’t find where I ordered it from, but the Hobby Warehouse has a package deal. Sadly they don’t say what percentage the solder is – my understanding is the solder content should be 56% or above.

Another source of the sterling is in the Jewelry sections at hobby shops – you can buy flat head pins and eye pins that work nicely if they don’t have .925 wire.

The .999 has low electrical resistance. The .925 does have nickle to harden it, but it is better than copper.

Yes... copper has a tendency toward corrosion and off-gassing. Silver is cleaner and a better conductor... especially if you are running your positive and negative leads through a tank.

No need for wraps if you solder. I normally use screw posts for the kanthal.

I do mine with no soldering. I just use small guage enamel coated wire to hold one needle to the center post, insulate it with heat shrink, then wind the wire from the connecter around the second needle and wind that with more enamel coated wiring on top of the heat shrink.

Are you using flux? are the joining areas clean? and don't just pick up some solder with the iron and apply it to the join...place the tip of the iron on one side of the join, and the solder on the other...the join will heat up and melt the solder, which will flow right in for a smooth join.
