I wasn't going to post this since it sounds like I am whining..but here goes anyway.
Today I went to the store by myself. Mike usually goes with me just to get out of the house. Anyway I was walking around picking up this and that waiting for my script to be filled when I realized I didn't have my watch. I saw a young man near me with a watch on and said "pardon me, what time is it?" This kid who looked fairly clean cut turned to me and away from his buddy and said "can't you read Bi*ch?" There was a clock behind me on the wall of the meat section.
My first knee jerk reaction was to slap the smug little ..turd. Then I realized it would be pointless to go to jail for the likes of him. So I told him "You are a rude child who should be ashamed of himself". About then the meat dept. manager came out from behind the counter and told the kid to get out of the store..the manager started apologizing to me.
I was well and truly shocked. Not because I was cussed at by a kid..I am not that thin skinned, but that it happened in my small town. I have never run into a rude kid here! Not in 18 years. One night at the video store I worked at, I was alone when a group of punk looking kids came in. I was hoping there would be no trouble when one caught my eye after I said Hi. He comes over to me smiling and said "Hi! You are new, nice to meet you!" He went on to introduce himself and his friends.
There was a time in my life I would have gotten into his face and backed him down..I tend to have a very short fuse when it comes to things like that. Don't get me wrong..I don't have much of a self preservation streak..I trained to be a cop! But as I age it seems to be useless to get all up in people's faces. It only serves to feed their self importance. Too bad we don't know this stuff when we are young.
Oh well I guess it's just as well we are moving back to Tampa. The small town feel is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. We are basicly a bedroom community to Orlando now.
It's a sad feeling.
