@Kprthevapr , Wow! I guess the ANTZ have decided to brain wash our kids against us. That pretty well makes it official, it's a nation wide issue. Not surprising though. Get 'em while they're young, naïve and impressionable. That way they don't have to worry about anybody questioning the propaganda they're regurgitating.
Thanks for posting that and please call or write to Desert Sands Unified School District. Enough complaints got the other billboard taken down. Maybe we can get this one taken down too.

I wonder what their policy is about holding your hand in the shape of a gun & saying "boom"?

I am sure that would get a child put on some kind of terrorists list after being sent to the principals office, the police and your parents called and a suspension for a pre-determined or indefinite amount of time.

Our kids schools are also condemning vaping as tools of the devil. It could be a campaign to keep kids from starting to vape straightaway, with the belief there is no danger whatsoever. They could be fear mongering, which could really benefit us. The more kids seen vaping, the more the squids (politically correct people) will gnash their teeth.

I get your point, @jwilkers but can't agree with the tactics. It's one thing to give children factual information and allow them to make an educated choice. To lie to them and scare them into believing what you want them to believe is something ENTIRELY different. It's brainwashing through the use of propaganda.

Alcohol is the single biggest killer of adolescents in the US but you hardly see or hear anything about that. And, the kids who choose to drink (or smoke cigarettes) do it regardless of what the facts and the truth are about those products. Of course it would be healthier if NO ONE ever even started smoking, drinking or, dare I say it, vaping. Anyone not of legal age, vaping, absolutely does not help our image but it IS going to happen in some instances. It's the brainwashing and propaganda that has to stop. Don't teach our children WHAT to think, teach them HOW to think!

I tried and tried to find a way to send a letter DIRECTLY to the Director of Curriculum Development @ Scholastic but couldn't. I ended up using the "contact us" tab at the bottom of the page and pasting this letter in their form, titling the letter "ATTN: Director of Curriculum Development". The form ASSURED ME that "someone" would be in touch with me within ONE business day. That was over a week ago! Surprised??? Not in the least..........

Sirs,
It has come to my attention that your corporation is providing curriculum to the nation’s school districts involving electronic cigarettes and vaping. It is important for our youth to be informed in all aspects of life in order for them to become intelligent, productive adults. I agree that electronic cigarettes and vaping is an important subject in regard to personal choices and public health.
My concern is that, after reviewing your material, it appears to be an effort to teach our youth not how to think but what to think about electronic cigarettes and vaping. The material is strictly anti vaping, gives no references to the studies noted or the dates of those studies, contains false information and does not include any of the positive aspects of electronic cigarettes and vaping. Thereby eliminating the lesson of how to think and instead, imposes upon the students what to think. A “critical thinking” exercise, as mentioned in your curriculum, is not possible given the lack of information and false information in the body of the curriculum.
While it is true that the FDA recently deemed vapor products to be tobacco products, that deeming is tenuous at best and is already being challenged through litigation. There are also Senators challenging these regulations as misguided and a complete over reach on the part of the FDA in an effort to gain control over vapor products. Something they have been attempting to do since 2008, without success. Furthermore, the FDA ignored a report that they funded, prepared by the National Health Institute - March, 2016 – full report here - http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/add.13394/epdf?r3_referer=wol&tracking_action=preview_click&show_checkout=1&purchase_referrer=www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov&purchase_site_license=LICENSE_DENIED_NO_CUSTOMER - This report supersedes the report your curriculum is based on. As well as the Royal College of Physicians report: Nicotine without smoke: Tobacco harm reduction - April, 2016 – full report here - https://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/projects/outputs/nicotine-without-smoke-tobacco-harm-reduction-0
It is my belief that your job as educators is to educate, to teach America’s youth how to think. It is not your job to influence their minds to fit one opinion or agenda, to teach them what to think. I am asking you to please cease interjecting opinions and agendas into our youth’s education and allow them to form their own opinions through balanced and unbiased education. I am gravely concerned that these practices are leading to a generation of followers, not leaders.

After I wrote that this morning, I decided that I will probably email Scholastic, and tell them my vaping story, and how disappointed I am that a company I respected so much is recommending teaching kids this way. I will include links to PHE and The Royal College of Physicians. I will also tell them that I am very upset that my grandchildren now think that smoking is better than using vaping as a way to quit smoking, and that their materials helped to teach them this.

I will also tell them about how my lung capacity was that of an 80 year old woman in my 40's, and now that I am 63, my lung capacity is that of a woman in her 40's, and that my pulmonologist applauds my use of vaping as a way to quit smoking.

Yes, I will still also get in touch with vapers in Rochester, and with the school.

While the kids are here, I go up to spend time with them before work in the morning, and spend time with them after work in the evening, so I probably won't do anything until next week when they have gone home and I have more time.

The grandchildren arrived for vacation yesterday, and are now really upset because they started teaching them in school that vaping is worse than smoking.

I would have to hear first hand what exactly they are being told.

FWIW, I kinda have no problem dissuading children from the idea of smoking or vaping. Heck, people (adults) come on here sometimes who have never smoked, and want to vape (because their friends are doing it, etc.) and forum members tell them 'don't start if you are not a smoker'.......and I kinda understand that, too.

So, I would have to know exactly how this stuff is being explained to them, the exact wording used, etc. Children don't often interpret things they hear properly, ya know.
