"E-cigarettes also contain tiny amounts of formaldehyde — which the US Environmental Protection Agency considers to be a "probable human carcinogen" because frequent and intense exposure to formaldehyde has been linked to certain cancers."

Where does the formaldehyde come in? The flavorings? The silica wick?

It seems most of the studies are testing the cigalikes that have pre-filled cartomizers. I think the polyfill-like materials used as wicking may contribute to the formaldehyde. But who knows

oh okay, that would make more sense than the juices containing it or it being a by product of the heated coil. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure (not 100%) that the German study on vaping stated that formaldehyde is a by-product of "breathing" and has noting to do with vaping.

From the article:

And when asked why e-cigarettes are banned even as a smoking-cessation tool at Cal, Steve Maranzana, project manager of Tobacco-Free Berkeley, responded: "E-cigarettes are not FDA-approved, and we want to steer people towards quitting resources that have been proven to be effective and FDA-approved."

Let's guess how much of Mr Maranzana's salary is paid for by Big Pharm. My guess is close to 100% considering they fund most groups like his. Why else would he blatantly lie about the effectiveness of NRT products developed by the Big Pharm industry. When 95% of people fail at smoking cessation by using NRT products, I would not call that "effective". I would call that a nearly complete failure that bilks the world's population out of millions of dollars.

I think it does, too.
I would have to research in my bookmarks at home, though.
And yes, normal, healthy, non-vaping, non-smoking people breathe out formaldehyde. It is produced in the body. And then exhaled.

You can say that again!
For what other reason would somebody call a 95% failure rate "effective"?

Hey... and I don't get this, somehow:
Berkeley is supposed to be an institution of higher learning. And nobody there questions such blatant nonsense? Not even the students themselves?

a. to me, this does not say anything good about the quality of learning that is given / supposed to be given to the students there
b. what is the world coming to? Jeeez.. when I was a university student (in the 1980s), we were not content to lower our heads and meekly accept anything that was thrown at us by "those up there". On the contrary. My generation was taught, raised and educated to think for ourselves.
c. thank you, dear G**, that I am no longer young, and that I will not have many many more decades of living - and working - in the company of such people. Whose only education (even higher education) appears to consist of meekly accepting any kind of garbage without ever questioning what "those up there" throw at them.

edit:
Yeah, and the education and upbringing one receives does tend to have a lasting effect.
I still think for myself. And yes, I know that I am one of a dying breed.
University students meekly accepting lies and junk science...... Thank you, dear G**, that I do not have my whole life in front of me, in this kind of society.

My bookmarks are at home, but I found this about Formaldehyde:

Formaldehyde -- Facts Versus Rhetoric

The fact that formaldehyde is a normal component of human
metabolism has continually been ignored in congressional proceedings,
press reports and even in communications by the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) and other federal agencies.

Because formaldehyde, like alcohol, has a tendency to evaporate from the bloodstream into exhaled
breath, there are measurable amounts of formaldehyde in human breath
at all times.

These levels are the result of the normal amounts of
formaldehyde present in the blood rather than external exposure.

In the same way, then, that alcohol contained in the breath is a reliable
indicator of blood alcohol levels (i.e., the basis for the commonly
used "breathalyzer" test), the same is the case with formaldehyde. In
a 2005 study (Berthold Moser, et al., published in Respiratory
Physiology & Neurobiology, Vol. 145, Issues 2-3, February 2005),
researchers measured the amount of formaldehyde in the breath of 344
healthy men and women.

The results of this study are significant since
it is now being claimed that formaldehyde concentrations equivalent to
normal levels emitted in human breath are capable of producing adverse
effects.

In the Moser study, the median level of formaldehyde in human
breath was 4.3 parts per billion (ppb) with levels of 6.3 ppb, 40 ppb
and 73 ppb of the 75th, 97.5th and maximum percentiles, respectively.

Given this data, it is troubling that CDC has recently advocated .....

I advise everybody to please read on :D Check the date, and check what this refers to :D

Oh, the dangers of formaldehyde... hahahaha!!!
History repeats itself, eh? :D :D :D

......
sorry, DC2, I cannot open your link from here... the wonders of modern technology... sigh.. will try this evening

"On January 1, 2014, UC Berkeley will go completely tobacco-free, and the use of cigarettes and all tobacco products will no longer be permitted on campus or other UC Berkeley owned or leased properties.

Why?

UC Office of the President charged all UC campuses to go smoke- and tobacco-free by January 1, 2014 to save lives and improve the health of our community.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and according to the US Surgeon General, there is no safe level of second-hand smoke. In the United States, tobacco use is responsible for about one in five deaths annually (i.e., about 443,000 deaths per year, and an estimated 49,000 of these smoking-related deaths are attributable to secondhand smoke exposure).

A tobacco-free campus will:

Create a healthier environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors;
Support tobacco users who are trying to quit; and
Reduce the number of new tobacco users by promoting the social norm of a tobacco-free environment.

We plan to ensure that tobacco users have access and referrals to a variety of cessation support services to help them be successful with their personal health goals. University Health Services (UHS) will be offering students, faculty and staff one-on-one cessation assistance to develop a quit plan, free quit kits, and a free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) starter pack for those who meet for a brief consultation with a tobacco cessation counselor. Tobacco users are also encouraged to utilize the evidence-based quit resources, including free apps, text messaging, online programs, and the California Smokers’ Helpline (1-800-NO-BUTTS) available at the UHS Smoking Cessation website.

Why are e-cigarettes not allowed?

The safety of e-cigarettes remains unclear. Some researchers are concerned that new health risks may emerge from their long-term use. As research continues on e-cigarette safety and efficacy as a cessation tool, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization do not consider e-cigarettes to be safe at this time."

I'd have to ask them do they actually mean smoke free or nicotine free?
