Dan is that stainless hard to cut? It may be the photo but it looks like there are slight grooves on the side of piece. Looks like you used a pointed bit to cut the sides. Just wondering because I was considering trying SS but if it's that hard maybe I'll leave it to the pro's. The work looks excellent btw. Can't wait to see it all together so I can understand how it works. lol

Also a curved bit should make a smoother cut. Not being critical, just curious. :)

SS is a BEAR to cut, unless you have flood cooling and get your tool pressures and feed rates dead nuts on the money. It looks to me like his lathe has a wee bit of play in it which caused chatter, and SS will almost ALWAYS reveal that issue. The tool does need to have a "break" (slight rounding) on the tip, but it looks like his does based on what I see in the work.

That's why I considered making prototype Scubagens out of delrin and not aluminum, due to concerns about the health factor of AL and the ease of which delrin cuts compared to SS.

I'd be more worried about all the alum in all the everyday things we use. Deodorant, tums, shampoo. beer cans,, and on, and on, and on. if your really worried after you get it finished and tested just send it out and have it plated. It doesn't cost much (unless you plate it with gold) but then you would have the coolest mod around.

I can understand people being concerned about their health, it's their choice to make.

I made a tank (similar to suck-a-ton, but with some improvements in flow dynamics) and I scrapped it because it was aluminum back when everybody was up in arms about the potential health risks. Then one day I picked up a hot sandwich from the take-out joint... wrapped in aluminum foil... and I kind of decided I was being overly alarmist. Aluminum is everywhere, all over the place. My food comes in contact with it all the time.

But I made a SGV3 out of delrin... and the heat from the coil made it kind of melty near the middle ring flange where the positive wire comes up.... and the out-gassing was EVIL... go figure.

You know, I've always wondered quite a bit about plastics and their toxic fumes. I mean, plastic is a petroleum product right, and petroleum products come from organic matter that was squished and heated for long periods of time.... So, on the funny side that means my car is dinosaur powered, but why would fumes from burning or melting what was once organic matter be toxic?

It just is... :D

(I actually know the answer, but this isn't the place for a long winded explanation of cracking petroleum in the distillation stack.)

That falls in the category of 'Things That Make You Go Hmmmm'. Think I'll stay with Alum

Dad! I thought you were dead!

I actually don't care. Stay away from stuff that smells bad and don't eat stuff that makes you walk funny, that's enough for me. Its a world full of people that think they're gonna live forever, but I know its really a lottery.

Personally I vape from alum. tank right off the lathe and don't give it a second thought.
but,,,,
I guess my point was the plating process to put to rest any fears. Maybe I didn't say it right.

Got it... get it plated with uranium and I'll be perfectly safe... cool!
