Ok, it's time to just come out and say this... THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.

Each time a n00b comes in and asks about what type of e-cig they should look at to quit smoking cigarettes, we get one member in particular who copy/pastes the exact same thing ad nauseum:

Rule of Thumb from Seasoned Vapers: the more it looks like the real thing, the worse the performance and reliability.

Using prefilled carts provides the worst taste and costs the most. Blah, Blah, blah gets almost as many negative reviews as the Blu.

Most important point: if you want to avoid frustration and inconsistency, DO NOT get an auto switch device. Stick with the manual switch devices with the small button. They provide much better performance, consistency and reliability.

The best PV's made are the premiere devices which do not look like the real thing. But since appearance is more important to you than performance, I won't list those. The two manuals that are the closes in size to the real thing and still do a fairly good job, with some limitations, are the Joye 510 and the MANUAL (not auto) DSE901.

Now not to single him out, we see quite a number of other forum members relay a similar (albeit, less Hitler-like) message.

There are really a couple of different camps here.

1) Those who have smoked cigarettes for a long time and wish to quit. They look to this 'new technology' to aid them in their quest.

2) Someone simply looking for an alternative to cigarettes. No real intention to quit, they simply want something different, more flavorful, and POSSIBLY more socially acceptable.

3) Someone looking to a PV as a new lifestyle. This personality is likely going to go balls-to-the-wall and will want for more power, more vapor, and the latest cool gadget.

In many cases (as many of us have experienced) you can graduate from type 1 straight to type 3 as you come to enjoy vaping more over time. Maybe you only looked to vaping as a means to quit smoking, then became somehow enraptured in it, thus beginning a new obsession where you crave more and better over time.

TYPE 1:

Type 1 is that guy/gal who has tried other methods of cessation, and has either failed, or given up. They hear about e-cigs and the forum, and begin doing some preliminary research. They are used to the feeling of a cigarette in hand or in their mouth. They have formed habits around how they hold them, how they smoke them, and how they carry them (the pack and a lighter)... and have built a lifestyle around that.

For them it's not simply a matter of nicotine addiction, but also the oral fixation, the habit of holding something in their hand, but also smoking WHILE doing something else (typing at the computer, driving, golfing, etc). For them it is as much a physical addiction as it is a chemical dependency.

When they move to an e-cig they want something as close to a cigarette in look/feel/operation as possible because THAT'S what they need. They require a direct replacement not only in the nicotine but in every physical way as well.

At first they would rather NOT have to push a button to activate the e-cig. They would rather have a smaller unit to more closely mimic the feeling of a cigarette. They would rather buy carts instead of re-filling blanks or dripping. They would rather have a convenient PCC that is somewhat close in size to a real pack of smokes. They probably do not want a PV that looks like a vibrating bullet sex-toy, like the Unabombers first project, like a full sized dildo, like a flashlight, or a screwdriver. Not only are those rather alien to them, they can be off-putting because they WANT to use their new e-cig everywhere, which includes out with friends and family.

They want fast to go, pull it out, puff on it effortlessly, put it away ease of use. They aren't worried (yet) about the battery lasting 5 hours at a time. They buy a PCC and extra batts. They aren't looking for mountains of vapor (unless they were a 2 pack a day or more full flavored smoker), they just want the sensation, noticeable vapor, and flavor with their nicotine delivery.

Unlike the "seasoned vaper" who has been doing this a while and has achieved a certain expectation... they don't require a mountain of vapor yet. They aren't looking to choke themselves to death like the first time their ...... buddy handed them an unfiltered Camel at 15 and said "just puff on it like a regular cigarette, and inhale realllly deeply", they aren't expecting to have a battery that runs for 3 days between charges.

TYPE 2:

This guy/gal is more open to suggestion. He's gonna hit a cig when he feels the overwhelming urge, but would prefer something with a different flavor, and possibly not annoy others with a rancid aroma from the cig. He's not expecting a direct replacement for a cig, so he may venture into manual batts, modded units, or even a Jantystick right off the bat. He wants "the experience" of vaping, and will likely go far to experiment with all types to get "the best". He'll likely start with a 901 or 510, keep and love it but quickly advance to a JS or further very quickly.

TYPE 3:

This guy did his research. He wants balls to the wall vapor, huge battery life, and serious hardware. Sure, his first will probably be a 510, but that'll pacify him for a week or two TOPS. This is the guy who will read every post, watch every youtube video, stockpile nic-juice like it's water after the Armageddon and will very quickly get into the big boys. The Prodigy, GGT, Screwdriver, Super T and more.

He doesn't care about the labors of PV's, he enjoys the extra work. He loves mixing, cutting, and creating his own juices. He has so many chargers sticking out of each wall socket in his den that he has to keep a fire extinguisher within 3 feet of the outlet. He has a jerry-rigged USP tower that will charge 6 batts at once on his computer tower. He has more syringes and dropper bottles than the local pharmacy. It is a complete lifestyle for him at this point.

So why not recognize these characters when they come on board? Why tell a n00b who CLEARLY STATES that they are a type 1, who CLEARLY only wants to replace cigs.... why tell him that if it looks/feels like a real cig it is crap, and you'll never be half the man that I am unless you slam batteries into a screwdriver handle or vape off a car battery???? Try to understand that SOME of these people ARE type 1 and in the beginning may not want a bigger, heavier, or more complex PV than a L88b, Joye 306 or a Blu?

I was a type 1 who quickly advanced to Type 3. I wanted to replace a cigarette. My life for over 20 years circled around smoking. How much so I actually didn't know until I quit... my God did I lose a LOT of productive time smoking! Anyway... I digress.... I needed that smaller, more compact and easy to carry solution. I advanced to the 510, but searched out an auto battery starter kit. I did not want a button to fool with, I needed to replicate the mechanics of SMOKING... not try to pick up a NEW habit or hobby. Once I got myself into it with those, I bought a bunch of manual batts to get a little more vapor. Then I went into the Jantystick, M401, and so on. But you know what? About 70% of the time I'm going out for a few hours I reach for my Blu. Yup. The simple convenience of the PCC and the size of everything is a Godsend.

When I'm at home, the 510 is pretty much the constant. Soon to be replaced by the VAPRE-51 when it arrives. At home I have a selection of juices within reach at all times to top off, drip or refill. But I still buy filled carts for simple convenience for those times that I don't have time to prepare my day's cart selections. Hey guess what? There are a TON of great tasting pre-filled carts out there! {{{{{{ SHOCKER }}}}}}

I dunno, when I see a newcomer asking questions, and they clearly identify themselves as a Type 1... I just think it would make much more sense to help them with what they are asking for, and maybe mildly suggesting other options... but keep their actual desires in perspective when trying to help out.

I think the main reason people recommend the 510 manual isn't because it produces more vapor, though it does. But because it does feel more like a cigarette in the quality of the vapor. It also tends to last through all the trials and errors that new users make. It's so easy to flood the atty at first, and even once in a while after you've been vaping a while, and that can leak into the auto batteries and make them stop working. If stuff stops working in the first few weeks after you've spent $50 or more on it, it is very easy to say that they don't work well and give up. Now that there are 901 manuals I expect to see them recommended a bit more, because the 901 is a fine unit. I think also that most of the folks making recommendations here have tried a lot of different types searching for the ones that work best and don't want to see other people have to go through that hassle or see others have to spend money that might later realize they could have spent on a device they would have been happier with.

I always try to explain why I'm recommending what I do, even though I've typed it over and over, because without the reasoning it does seem bossy. We forget that not everyone has time to spend going through all of the posts for days and haven't seen the information over and over again like we have.

I do think steering folks away from the ones that look like analogs is good, because most of the ones that look like cigs really really don't work and the fear is that people will try them and give up when they don't work well. Then not only have they gone back to the dangerous chemicals in analogs, but they also tell others that e-cigs don't work and that discourages other people from trying them. I just think sometimes we need to steer more gently.

Yes, there are great tasting carts out there. I really liked the ones that I got with my 901, but I think when we recommend filling your own it's mainly a cost issue. It is much cheaper to fill them yourself than to buy them prefilled. Maybe a better way to phrase it would be for us to tell people that there are great carts out there, but for cost reasons most of us have chosen to fill our own.

I am trying to help a friend pick one out for his mom and gave him a list of questions to ask her to try to tailor the advice I give him to her needs while getting her the best product I can find that fits those needs. We need to remember to do that here as well, because vaping is not a one size fits all thing.

Thank you for taking the time to say what I think every time I read a veteran e smoker post these dictatorial "suggestions" Most people do not want a mod or a button the first time they make a purchase. They want something that looks like the real thing. Perhaps that is all they will ever want. People making newcomers feel stupid for buying a Blu or Smoking Everywhere or some other product do a disservice to the new person with a question about that device. Just answer the question without going into a sermon about what they have spent their hard earned money on. The last thing I would want to hear is that I have been duped and now have to shell out more money for the "right" thing. Frankly, if I had heard that from my first post, I would have given up.

an interesting post.. a few assumption are made about the "types" that might be arguable.. but there are different types of e smokers..

this place is dominated by the N0 3 type.. i would call them "enthusiasts"..

they dole out advice to the other types..

i think there is a type who reads up the info.. simply wants to replace his/her tobacco habit with e cigs.. or what i would be more happy to call an e smoking device..

in a perfect world we would all like something the size and weight of a half smoked cigarette.. take note i say half smoked cos this would be the most realistic fake electronic cigarette not one that remains full size all the time..

but those who are relatively well informed know that the e cig world is far from perfect and certain compromises have to be made if a heavy smoking habit is to be replaced with an electronic method..

cigarette like e cigs were never designed or intended to totally replace a heavy tobacco habit..

light occasional use.. okay.. heavy all day and every day use.. not okay..

so from my point of view and Ruyans things that look like real cigarettes are "toys"..

so if you want to play at e smoking (light occasional use) you have no problems.. if you want to get off your heavy tobacco habit using cigarette like e cigs.. you will have..

you will in essence be using a product for a purpose it was never intended to be used for..

Ditto on Sherid's comment. I live around retirees...for most of them, I think they are Type 1 -- their eyesight is failing so the tedium of refilling carts wouldn't be good. Since I have both an automatic and a manual, I show them both -- giving the pros and cons.

Even for myself, I'm waiting for Blu to get their act together as I really want to add it to my arsenal. At the same time, I want every color of the 510 that is available.

I'm not sure, though, that people really intended to come across as preachy. So maybe this thread will help.

ps... most people want something they aint gonna get... but thats human nature.. we spent six months and spent a fortune before we realized the only way we were going to get something that suited our needs was to make our own device.. we think our needs are similar to a lot of nicotine addicted medium to heavy tobacco smokers.. so in the end it does come down to what you both want and expect an e cig to do for you.. we knew what we needed one to do for us..

a 510 will work very nicely when its new.. but given heavy use be prepared to buy lots of batteries and if away from an alternative power source.. carry lots of batteries..

i could be kind and think some of the stuff that appears on this place is posted thru ignorance.. but a lot of it is simply a deliberate attempt to mislead..

one other simple explanation is lots of folks dont want to know the odd fact or two.. it spoils the fun of finding it all out by buying lots of new stuff... which is what a lot of folks on this place are about.. fun for some a living for others..

almost everything you said is spot on but when i came here to the forums i got bad info and was directed to a few models that nearly made me give up pv's. It wasn't till 150$ later i finally ran in to the 510 that i could say this is my new hobby. I wish i had info i had now i could of saved 150$ to just spend on juices. Which that is the reason i will always no matter what suggest the 510/manual to everyone starting out.

We have gone directly to blowing through your entire body to accomplish anus hit....

you are doing a pretty good job of talking thru it as well.. he he

when you know logical argument wont work resort to ridicule.. we aint into e smoking extremes we never have been.. plenty are tho..

we just wanted something that worked without having to carry a pocketful of batteries or a wired power pack... a 510 dosnt do this.. as anybody that tries to use one for a while will soon get to find out..

When i started looking i almost made the BLUE mistake
But i like to read and after finding this forum i did a lot of it
(my father always said if you shut your mouth and open your ears you will learn more) ;)
And i did not post questions other people had already done that.
All you have to do is research the forum and most of the answers have already been posted

So my first unit was a 510 i'm using it as i write this with some Vermont Vapor Cool Mint :p

I also have my 901 full of mocha sitting near at hand
I sell the 901 also because of it's ease of use for the beginner and decent batt life

I want people to use these and come back for more i don't want them discouraged with them.(And i am not just talking just about sales either)
I want them to be happy with them to spread the word to make others see them for what they are (a dam site better than analogs)

Most have already been discouraged by the patch and other crap that don't work and i don't want them to spend more money and be discouraged with this

The old man also was right about this:
The best advertisement you can get is word of mouth people telling other people about how happy they are about something is better and faster than any paid advertising

Also if you screw people it will come back and bite you in the ...

There's my 2 cents :D

Bandit You are SOOO Right!! I'm a mix of #1 and # 3

Ok, it's time to just come out and say this... THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.

There are really a couple of different camps here.

1) Those who have smoked cigarettes for a long time and wish to quit. They look to this 'new technology' to aid them in their quest.
2)
3)

At first they would rather NOT have to push a button to activate the e-cig. They would rather have a smaller unit to more closely mimic the feeling of a cigarette.

They want fast to go, pull it out, puff on it effortlessly, put it away ease of use.
(unless they were a 2 pack a day or more full flavored smoker), they just want the sensation, noticeable vapor, and flavor with their nicotine delivery.
I am all these things. Every body I speak to on the forum says" Manual batteries are the only way" BUT.... I'm the guy you described above...I walk around with a but hanging from my lips and prolly one or sometimes two in a neaby ash tray!! After running my famly off, (seems I'm a little hard to live with...WHO KNEW?? ) My house is, (or was) one big ashtray... I'm never gonna get all the nicotine off my walls!!!! (oh man does that sound as bad to you as it just did to me??)
I multi task every day.If I have to use my hands to vape I'm gonna pick up an analog in a heart beat!!
S'OK... I'm cooking something up to solve my dilemma.
Can you say "Jem'Hadar" and Ketricel white?????
