Just to clarify, nicotine is one of the many whole tobacco alkaloids.
The MAOIs come from some of the other whole tobacco alkaloids that are naturally present in tobacco.
The MAOIs were not added by Big Tobacco.
Another well know effect of smoking is the ammonia, which makes the smoke more acidic.
This causes it to be far more rapidly absorbed by the lungs, and gives you a much quicker spike of nicotine.
Many claim that this quicker spike leads to a more addictive product, due to a "freebase" effect with rapid absorption and quicker elimination.
Patches, gums, inhalers, and electronic cigarettes give a slower absorption, and therefore a slower elimination.
It has been argued whether or not the addition of ammonia was done purposely by Big Tobacco.
I tend to believe the argument that it was added as part of the curing process and that the "freebase" effects were unexpected "benefits" for Big Tobacco.
Thanks for the clarification DC2. It's still scary to think I was smoking all those years and had no idea what was in them. I've had to give up smoking to find out lol.
