I'm soon to be 47 years old. I've been successfully vaping for over 2 years now. I've ordered a vast majority of my stuff online but every once in awhile, I have to resort to running out to one of my local shops to get something that is an immediate need. (Ran out of cotton or my next juice delivery hasn't arrived.... etc.) Every time I go in these shops, I feel like the creepy old dude that shouldn't be there. They're filled with a bunch of late teen/early 20's kids with shaggy mop tops, gauged ears, pierced everything and skinny jeans. This is both the customers and the employees. I feel like everyone is staring at me like, "what's this old fart doing in here?"

I almost never see people my age vaping out in public unless it's an eGo stick or some other similar device. No one has mods or tanks except for the young kids. Then there's me with my little IPV D2 and Smok TFV4 mini. Meanwhile, the youngsters are all sucking on 200W mods with massive quad coil drippers and puffing away on such tasty sounding flavors like Dying Unicorn Blood and Sasquatch Poop.

I've been vaping off and on practically since vaping first became publicly available. I finally found stuff that worked for me and got off analogs completely. Now I feel like some old dinosaur trying to fit into some scene I'm not a part of just to get some cotton or a roll of wire.

So seriously, when did this become a "scene" thing?
Oh,its not just me that feels this? Lol My shops are the same way! I want to ask them if school let out early and if they turned in homework. Of course i just get what i need and walk away, knowing they are glad im gone.

Call me crazy but you could always try a different shop.
You've had a bad experience which is a shame, but sounds like your issue is more to do with the competence of the staff. Don't really understand why their appearance is an issue though...
We have 3 shops in this town. All of them are pretty much the same as far as people go. Their appearance isn't an issue. I only mention the appearance because that's the majority of what populates the shops. Young scenesters just too cool to be seen talking to the old guy. I don't care if the gauges in your ears are big enough for me to putt golf balls through them. Just don't act like you've got your panties in a bunch when you're waiting on someone who doesn't fit in your little group.

The other thing about it is how something that was meant to help stop smoking has turned into a recreational hobby for these guys. (And girls.) It has become a "scene" thing like your outfit isn't complete unless you've got a 200W mod to match your tiger stripped, swept bangs haircut.

This made me recall something I had almost forgotten. Like when a plain tobacco smoker would ask to bum a cigarette, then turn up their nose at the offer of a menthol, as if it were somehow inferior ...

I still prefer menthol juice ... :D

I've only visited two B&Ms in my area. In the first one, I was simply ignored (age 63 :(), and in the other it was so cloudy inside I could barely see the counter. If I go back I will tie a string to the door so I can find my way out ...

That's one reason I always smoked menthols no one would ever bum one unless they were really desperate.

I live in a town that has a big arts and music scene, which means we have a lot of cabbie-hat wearing, bearded hipsters, especially in the downtown area. There is a vape shop downtown that also sells beer and kratom (essentially "drug tea") and it is definitely a hang out for hipsters. Then again, most bars in that area are. You walk in the place and you can't see very well from all of the vapor, and half the people who work there are pretty rude and uninviting unless you are a cloud-chaser and will virtually ignore you if you are a tootle-puffer. I have literally been in there to buy something, began to make small talk with the employee during the sale, who literally cut me off by giving me the cold shoulder and then ignored me. He literally interrupted me to talk to a guy wearing the hipster uniform and sitting with his big box thing, and then he proceeded to completely ignore me, when I began to tell him how I am proud of my husband (who was with me) had quit smoking and is vaping now. I have had similar experiences with other employees there as well. It is generally not a very friendly place unless you look like them and have some big, powerful device.

They only carry really powerful devices, and only carry juices that are AT LEAST 70/30.

DISCLAIMER: I wouldn't comment on their appearance except that it is virtually a uniform.

I realized long ago no matter what business I was patronizing, the young fella's working there seemed to get a bit yantzi (dang! I have no clue how to spell that!) when waiting on me and a good looking 20 year old female walked in the door. Not surprised they wanted to be done with the old guy so they could move on to something a little more interesting (throws in best Gomer Pyle impersonation). I may be getting older, but my memory hasn't failed me that much yet.

Even though I may catch grief for this, but I am afraid "excellent customer service" may be headed for the "endangered species" list. Its demise is not limited to vape shops.

Remember the moochers who would look disdainfully at a "light" cigarette, break off the filter, and walk away muttering something about "wimps" ?

When someone would ask for a "spare" smoke, I would carefully count those in the pack, and sadly reply "Only 20 here, no spares, sorry" ... :(

That's the only thing I miss about smoking ...

In my shop, when i walked in i felt i was busting up a party. Age and even the looks of them is not what put me off,but they way it felt. Everything seemed to slow down, like a parent walked into a party, for real.
As much as i know hanging around a vape shop is far better than some choices i made as a kid, some of those kids have a job there and should act like it.
Maybe next time i will wear a tank top and show all my tatts to see if they react different, lol

ANYONE that walks into my favorite shop gets welcomed with a hearty HELLO from everyone on duty at that time, They treat everyone the same, old, young, pierced, tatted...etc. Its cloudy, yeah, the employees are all in their 20'a and I am pushing 50. I know every employee by name and they all know me by name. I hang out on Friday Night, shoot the breeze, work on builds, offer some advice when warranted, etc...

I have been in shops like the one OP has mentioned and I just refuse to go back. Lucky for me I can afford to buy all my gear in over priced b & m's should I choose to, unlucky for you if you don't act like you want my business.

I'm 47, and my local vape shop is in a college town. The young guys probably do think I'm a weird old lady fart. I don't care :). After teaching for 19 years I'm very comfortable with younger people and have no qualms about being with and talking with them. I think they get a kick out of me because I have mechs and high power boxes.

OK, if you get poor customer service then that's bad. If the staff don't acknowledge your presence or look bored then that's shocking business / staff management. I can empathize with you there, I think most people have had pretty shoddy customer service at some point in their lives!
But if the service was as bad as you say I'd only advise showing your displeasure by voting with your feet and wallet, or complaining to the store owner.
I guess I don't see the relevance of appearance, if you got this kind of service in a bank would you feel the same way about clean cut folk in suits? Probably not.
But regardless, I hope you find a better, more customer focused shop in the future.

Happy vaping!

I have been to many vape shops over the past few years, and so far, I have not walked into one yet where I gave a damn about the age of the other "customers", how they were dressed, what they looked like, their hair styles, what vape set-up they were using, or whether or not they talked to me. As far as customer service from the employees, I agree that is paramount....but with that being said, over the years I have received bad customer service in a variety of retail settings, from ALL ages, and all manners of dress and appearance. On a side note, I'm 54.

Exactly.

As I stated in an earlier post, I'll pay for a little overpriced something now and then to help out a local business but if you're going to treat me like I'm intruding on your territory, I don't really care if your shop goes under.

I don't think the OP has spent much time around the younger generation, just in general they don't communicate well, let alone on their first job ever, they were raised on the internet and texting, manors are what you get from a child that has been raised without timeout's ...............

I guess my thing here is kind of two fold.

I say it's becoming a scene kid thing because it really is. That's who they are. I don't have anything against that except when the scene kids start acting like older people don't belong. And that is how they are acting when you visit any of the shops in this area. As a result, I feel like the whole "scene" of it is taking over what it really should be. It has nothing to do with their look except they all look like a bunch of little scenesters trying to fit into their little clique and want to exclude everyone else.

And if you've never gotten attitude from a guy in a 3 piece suit working in a bank, you don't go to banks very much. Financial scenesters have their own little cliques...... Believe me. They're the ones trying to take over my wallet. o_O

You might not be ready for the working world yet if your resume is written in textspeak.
I've seen it and it does not bode well for our futures.

I guess my local vape shop is a rarity then, run by a young bloke, friendly, chatty, polite. I'm always greeted and treated well, I try a juice or 2 but like yourself go mostly for wire, cotton or the odd mod (he'll price match whatever I find online if he has it in stock) .
It's often busy in there but I'm never left standing long. The clientele is varied though, plenty of folks older than me, some younger as well. Maybe I'm just fortunate!

I think you are.
When our first shop opened up here, you could see a variety of ages as well. That changed in less than a year when the young kids moved in and took over. And price matching? I would LOVE to see any of the shops here do that!
