Very nice work. I noticed you took care to ensure no part of the coil is touching the base and/or either of the posts. The same rules apply for the Chalice or any other rba for that matter. It can be a 'touch' more difficult on the Chalice since there are more options for coil configuration, and if you're not paying attention, the coil can sag between the post and contact the base, or if the overall coil is too long and set up diagonally between the post, some of the outer coils can make contact with the post.

I mitigate all of these issues by building the coil first on a toothpick, though any cylindrical tool of the correct size will work. Once installed, you can easily inspect the coil to make sure you don't have any points that will short. Only when you are satisfied with your coil do you then install the wick.

I had some bad luck trying to install a wick/coil combo. It seemed that with all that wick in the way I could never quite see if the coil was touching something it shouldn't.

It also helps to use the thicker wires as they hold their shape better when installing the wick.

Oh hell yes. That is so what I'm lookin forward too.

Jan, can you post some pix of yours (chalice) too pretty please?

Of the Chalice, ERA, Hornet, A7, REOmizer and Spiral, the Chalice is my favorite. With just a little practice, its as easy to build as any of the others and it performs consistently, every time. The excess juice drains right back into the bottle. The screw on cap never needs pliers and olive oil to remove and my catch cup is always bone dry, and I don't need any o-rings to prevent leaks or have to worry about connection issues or crushing a gasket.

If not for their hefty price tag, I would own four of them.

Joe,
My chalice should arrive in the mail any moment. I'm sure that i will have a few questions for ya once i get time to screw with it - tonight hopefully. I saw several pix that you have posted on here, including a vertical coil - what coil set up do you like best - vertical or horizontal? I'm thinking that with the vert coil and the cotton just dangling on the squonk hole would be good?

I think the vertical coil has a slight edge on performance given that it has more clear exposure to the air path. That being said, I found it difficult to set up properly, though to be honest I haven't tried it with thicker wire. The 32g Kanthal would deform very easily, but I'm sure 30 or 28 would be more stable, but the thicker wire might not be as easy to wrap around the top post screw... too many variables.

It is not as easy to re-wick because if you feed the wick from the top it needs to make a sharp turn at the base, AND, oddly enough my biggest problem was flooding. With the wick bunched right over the hole it would prevent juice from draining back into the bottle.

I did use it for a while and was happy with the vape, but I've moved to the horizontal because I've found it just as good and a hell of a lot easier to set up and maintain. I'm sure if I gave it enough time I could make it work, but I'm getting lazy!

Give it a shot. Everything in my vert. set-up post still holds true, though I would probably use 30g Kanthal and rolled cotton these days.

I'll second that. I used a vertical coil setup with cotton braided wick for quite a while, and it worked pretty well. But now that I've switched to hildicat's method for the horizontal coil, it is way easier to maintain, and I'm very happy with the performance.

Looks great!

Just redid my Reomizer 9-10 wraps with 28wga, came out at 1.6 ohm, and vapes great. While the Reomizer vapes great, I really want to try a Chalise, but of course they are made of unobtainium now.... :)

I think a Chalice 1 will most likely be my next major purchase, that is unless it takes so long for them to be available that a Woodvil beats it out.

So I have been exclusively using Hildicat's squished 30g coils at 1.8-2.0 ohms on all of my ERAs for the last 3 weeks with rolled cotton ball wicks and I am totally sold on it. It has been the best 3 weeks of consistently great tasting vaping I have experienced. I set one up on my wife's ERA today and miscounted the coils and came out at 1.3ohm on a grand. Snap!! Crackle!! POP!! Incredible flavor with Unicorn Blood, and LOUD!! LoL. Sounds like a wet carto on steroids amplified through a surround sound theatre system.

I also tried some 28g on an A7. Wasn't sure on the number and managed to fit 12 wraps on a gorgeous coil that ohmed out at 2.0. Fired it up with some Fuzion Vapors Black Cavendish on the VV Woodvil at 4.2v. Flavor was so-so, but the throat hit was massive. Still playing with it but 30g definitely seems to be the ticket for me.

Same here bro. It is indeed a kickass setup. I am glad that those who have cut the trail have left us a map in that they have shared and provided us guidance with their info. To think just over a week ago I was using cartos!

Rock on Ratman!

chalice coil 1.2 5 wrap.jpg

I used 30 awg Kanthal A1 to make this coil. It is 5 wraps and meters at 1.24 ohms. Rather than use a machine screw, i switched to a small screwdriver like in juice junkies video. With this atty, the threads on the machine screw put the tails in the wrong orientation (top/bottom), hence the switch.

It is a very small diameter screwdriver (like 3/64"wide) to produce this tiny, tight coil. Once installed, tightened and aligned I then pushed the coil down so it is very close to the juice port. A thin little rope of rolled cotton was then inserted thru the coil for the wick. The coil is directly above the port and is so close to the bottom (not touching) that a squonk wets the coil! Vulcan awesome.

Awesome coil. What RBA is this?
