Sound nice... do you have some pict? I am waiting some organic hemp cord from ebay to switch from silica wick; is not about taste (I found it neutral in good quality silica) but for some comments I saw about safety in vaping silica.. I really don't know, but if changing to something all natural will result in same vape experience I will switch.
About cotton ball.. I am concerned about burning if you get a dry hit..What is your experience?
Cheers..

Bro, with a chalice, no concern of dry hit. Squonk all ya want. Also, I have burned slightly and once ya squonk it again it is fine in a hit or two. You must try it!

Cotton works great! I use the round cotton pads. You can pick up a zillion of them for cheap. What's nice about the pads is that they are a consistent thickness so I just cut strips about 1/8 inch wide then gently roll one end between fingers and thread thru coil as shown in previous pictures and trim ends. After building I give a good couple of squonks and let soak thru thoughly then vape away! :)

I'm just trying out the round cotton pads as well. Boiled, then cut into strips and rolled as above. I have to say, I'm loving the (lack of) flavor with the cotten, apparently, the silica wicks have a "taste" of their own that I never noticed. I've got my coil running "thru" instead of "between" the posts, so changeout should be a breeze.

Yup! Change outs are easy. When I start getting a funky taste or the cotton finally gives out I just take a pair of tweazers pull away the old give the coil a good dry burn, insert a new strip, squonk, and voila good to go for a few more days. My coils last awhile so just replacing the wick every few days is all I do. Love the low maintainance of these RBAs! :)

Sorry, I didn't take any photos.
And I just built a new coil and wick now using cotton only, it's just too fun trying new setups. :)
I boiled the cotton first, then rolled it and put it through the coil.
Love the taste! There really something about the clean taste it produces.

I did take pictures now, the finished setup:

7 wraps of Kanthal 30, 2.5Ω
Was supposed to be 6 wraps for around 2.2Ω, but I lost count.... ;)

Hmmm. This got me to thinking. I've been measuring the length of wire I use, then wrap to however many wraps that comes out to. Then I slide the ends *just* through the post holes and tighten them down. I use 30ga Kanthal, so 1"=.7 ohms, or 3"=2.1ohms exactly. Plus I don't have to worry about using the same diameter each time to wrap the coil, very handy if you wrap around the wick.

I just thought that was easier than counting "wraps". Does anyone else do it this way?

i've been doing this for at least a week!!! lol.

but yes, that is exactly what i'm doing. I'm varying the object which i wrap the wire around for a difference in I.D.(inside diameter)

now that i'm doing it, i don't see how much variation there could possibly be except for wick material .(yes, i know the ohms will change with lentgth of wire or diff wire but if your going for consistancy it should be cut and dry once you find your sweet spot.)

I will give a shoot with cotton paddle... will try with "micro" coil (I want to reach 1.2 ohms with 10 wraps @29 AWG) will be really difficoult to insert cotton in micro coil. We will see...

I always wrap my coils on the same screwdriver and end up with a fairly consistent resistance , it was just a matter of doing a wrap too many. :)

It is not that much of a challenge. Just roll the wick tight, leave a pointed end and trim the very tip to remove any stray fibers. I use a wet paper towel to keep my finger tips moist.

Here's something thats working for me. I'm getting awesome thick vapor and intense flavor with a 50/50 pg/vg mix. I'm using an A7 RBA.. I am using wicks made from cotton balls. Make a wick using the "Z" pattern. After making the coil I took more cotton and ran it over top of the wick making sure that there was plenty of cotton touching the floor of the RBA so it would wick. This increases the contact of the coil with the juice greatly. Also less squonkiing as there is so much juice absorbed by the wicking. I am using a kick in the Grand. My coils are about 2.3. Because so much air is moving over the cotton when you drag I think it provides more flavor as well.

Here's a pic showing the cotton laying over the top of the coil:

I actually got a little overdose of nic, something that never happens to me.

That looks like a novel idea but would it work with a "side air-vented" RBA?

I really should quit messing with different coil/wick set-ups but it sure is fun...

But it's costing me "an arm and a leg!" (actually it's a few pennies per wrap at most!)

HA!

I don't know how it would work with a side hole. With the center post on the A7 drawing air right below the coil it works very well. I would like to know how it works with a side hole RBA. Maybe some kind Reonaut will send me a Chalice to try it out.

I've tried that before with the chalice and ERA with poor results. I think it works with bottom air intake precisely because the air path to the coil isn't obstructed.

First of all, thank you! I got sooo sick of trying to figure out all the variables in the RBA -- coil diameter, coil step spacing, wire gauge, wick material, wick tightness, space between coil and air hole... This method seems to remove quite a few variables.

I noticed it works very nice with a tiny diameter 32 gauge wire coil, with coil being sparse, where the loops don't touch each other. Makes wick even easier to replace.

Two questions though -- do you still run wick through the coil? And what do you mean by "Z" pattern?
