I learned something new today....and I'd love to hear if what I'm seeing is true. I used to think that it was very important that the coils did not touch each other, I'm finding this is not the case. I like higher ohm wraps to use on my VV Reo. It's pretty hard to make lots of wraps and keep the separated. I tried this today.

I wrapped it loosely but didn't really try to separate the wraps.

It keeps the coil centered of the posts when putting it in the ERA....the main coil does not hit the pos or neg posts.

This make any sense?

That's double 3mm wick and 7 wraps of 34 NiChrome which gave me 3.0 ohms. With The VV Reo maxed out it kicks ....

I have been messing around with this ERA for two weeks now.....Word of advice....But extra wick. I went through 20' of wick already. Just testing different coil methods....LOL

The good thing is I've learned a lot. I have finally figured out how to wrap 10 wraps and get a nice even burning coil. My biggest problem was figuring out....Finally....that you need to pull the coil away from the pos and neg posts after your done.....I think it's 9 or 10 wraps of 32 Nichrome measuring out to 3.2 ohms.

i found a perfect match for me at 1.6 ohm, using the ERA on my yet unkicked Reo Grand (oh yes oh yes, comes 1 ERA, 2 Kick will follow up ;) ).

first i tried to make a coil out of 0.15 kanthal (= thinner = more resistance = less wraps = less gunk - these were my considerations), but i wasn't able to pull the thin wire through the holes on the contacts. inserting it on one side is one thing, finding the way out on the other side is an other thing. the 0.15 kanthal just wrinkled to easiely because of it's softness.

so i ended up with a thicker wire (the one that came with the ERA) which must be something around 0.2 kanthal). wrapping it 4 times around 4 strings of silica (must be 1.5 - 2 mm silica) gave me 1.6 ohm. a very nice vape on the unkicked Reo Grand. i wrap without a help (paper clip or needle) and care not to cut the silica with the wire while wrapping. wrapping too tightly gives the whole coil a bad shape, the turns tend to become bigger and bigger because of silica jam. so i try not to strangulate the silica and i try to avoid, the silica loops turn with the wire while wrapping = stay +/- parallel. a dryburn after that (at low voltage) shows me if the coil is working = glowing regularly. if not, fixes with needle and by twisting and pulling sligthly on the silica. finally measure the ohm.

look forward for my Kick to try higher wattage, but so far this is a very pleasant experience. not sure about squonking now. normally a blind squonker, this method fails for me with the ERA. not using an adapter, i can't see the bottom of the drip well. the only method that works fine by now is TTS, quick and rough until a cloud comes out of the mouthpiece :).

sorry for the poor pic. maybe i gonna cut down the loop a bit, dunno yet.

I have tried silica, and it is just not for me. I tried about ten different set ups, torched the wick etc, and I just can't get a satisfying flavorful vape. I think I just prefer mesh. I found if I use a small piece of mesh at an angle it hits the floor of the atty and wicks up to the coil very quickly. I get about 8 big old clouds between squonks. This setup is awesome!!!

Since receiving my ERA I've been experimenting with many different wick set ups. I've come across one that seems to work extremely well. I'm using 3mm silica wick. Starting with about 3", I make a loop and wrap the coil around the ends of the loop about 1/2" from the end. Then, before connecting the leads, I put the loop over the center post. By pulling the wick ends through the coil you can adjust the size of the loop. Then I connect the leads and trim the excess wick from the ends. What this does is create a well for juice around the center pin. Works great!

Ok, now I've got to try the SS wick as well! Anyone have a pic of their setup? I assume that you need to have one end of the SS wick touching the base??

20120924133643.jpg

I've found it gets better as it "breaks in."

Edit: It doesn't have to touch the base. I just give my ERA a healthy squonk and e-liquid pools up underneath it and some of it gets soaked into the SS mesh wick. The rest gets sucked back down to the bottle when I release the pressure.

Howdy ERA-equipped REOnauts,
We've been working on wick coil configurations over in the TrippyTipps forum and last night I documented the process of duplicating the single loop juice well wick configuration. I thought since I got the idea from this thread I'd at least share the photos to possible help my fellow REO-kin. I used 3mm silica wick and 32AWG Kanthal A-1. The final configuration metered out at 2.0 Ohms on the nose.

One of our crew reproduced this with Bamboo versus my 3mm Silica and said it was knocking his socks off. Hope this benefits someone. Brew

Good Afternoon REOville,
One of the Trippy Peeps came up with an even easier setup that I put to use last night. I discovered the problem I was having with flavor and it was shorting of a couple of coils on each end of my 6/5 wrap against the positive and negative poles of the ERA. So make sure you dry-burn your coils before trimming the coil leads to see the entire coil glow orange. Anyway here's the design and if you want more info you can check out the thread over in the Trippy Tips forum.

Simple 6/5 coil wrapped around a single fold of 3mm silica wick.

Imagine you insert the bottom stand between the 2 poles from front to back and then loop the coil-n-wick assembly around the center post so that the coil leads can be inserted into the coil connection holes on the front side.
View attachment 150060
Pull the strand exiting out from under the coil to tighten the loop and trim even with the edge of the catch basin. This is mine after a couple evenings of use. Having the loop covering both the front and rear juice holes definitely helps this design wick effectively. Brew

looks nice :) i am looking for something like this with a magnifying glass attached to it *sigh

It would be easy to attach a magnifying glass to the threaded rod that connects the clamps together.
I have a few things that I made for making wicks, dry burning, cleaning would love to share with the group.

Is posting here OK or maybe start a new thread?

MikeAZ i would personally love to know what clamps those are and how you made them, i'm looking for something to hold cotton and bamboo wicks to make wrapping easier, for me doing it by hand the wick moves to much and i end up with really wide coils.

I've been vaping almost a year now (next month), rebuilding for a couple months now, started out with mesh, tried silica didn't like it felt tight on the ERA, read more disliked silica even more, which brings me to the setup i've been trying to use.
With silica being rather hazardous to our health, I would try a mesh silica hybrid mesh around silica wick, mesh to insulate the silica, which worked well on the ERA but I had problems making the mesh and coil small enough so it wouldn't short from the mesh hitting the side wall or posts.

great TH and flavor though with the mesh silica hybrid, but the shorts caused me to go with cotton for now, still have to try bamboo, and i'm considering hemp but i'm not sure about that, thoughts?

Hi Drako,

Just used two 6" spring clamps from home depot, removed the center bolts and replaced it with a 5" piece of 1/4" threaded rod and a few nuts with washers. I spaced the clamps apart about 3 inches.
It doubles as a stand as well as a way to hold your wick material taut. It works well with any material I've tried so far.

Hope this helps.
