I had the same problem except I made the mistake of not reading up what it was (had to leave to class already) so I just pulled it out. That "white cotton" is the wick and is supposedly necessary, but I've been told you can use your own filler (such as Blue Foam) to act as a wick and it improves the performance and duration of the juice in each cart.

A search should reveal the multiple methods to create a filler. (keywords: "blue foam" "filler" "electronic cigarette" etc)

Maybe you got some fuzzies from the cart filler stuck on the bridge. That would give you the bad taste. If it is, you can pick them off with tweezers. If they don't come off easily, it's probably the wicking element UNDER the bridge that carries the liquid down to the coil. That stuff is made of (I think) fiberglass, silica, and unobtainium.
Maybe some scrutiny with a strong light and a magnifying glass can help you determine what and where it is.

Your atomizer should come equipped with floss-like threads just UNDER the bridge - these are there to help the atomizer wick up the juice, so don't pull them out. You MIGHT also get a random fuzz sticking to the top or side of the bridge that should come off really easily with at tweezer or something, but if you find that it just might be stuck under the bridge - quit pulling because that's probably the wick.

DO NOT REMOVE THE WICK UNDER THE BRIDGE The bad taste is the primer. Get a paper towel and blow through the atomizer with papertowel at other end. You should get some wet liquid. It is there for protection from drying out. Do this four or five times. Drip some pg or vg and if you do not have this on hand drip 3 drops of your juice on it , put on the cart and vape without inhaling. Do this for about 4 or 5 sessions.
You should be good to go now.

I'm totally new to the e-cig scene. Ive read several posts talking about pg and vg... what does it stand for? I'm a noob so sorry I'm sure that I'm asking some sort of silly question.

Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. They are the carrier liquids that are used to make juices. They are what allows the atomizer to create vapor.

You can find plain pg or vg online and in some local stores. Walmart sells a vg liquid (humco brand) that can be used to vape out the primer or cut the nic content of juices you have. But no matter where you buy, make sure the product is USP (it will say so on the label). USP means that it is certified pharmacy grade so you can be confident there will not be contaminants in the liquid.

Yes to Urban above and also, Most people that I read here state the difference as:
PG - not as thick, more flavor, but less vaper, and doesn't clog attys as bad as VG...
but, if you really like the vaper production, VG is it...just might have to clean your atty out more...
I use mostly VG,,,just my preference...But, some vendors will actually mix both together for you with whatever percentage of each you want...I guess the best of both worlds...
Enjoy....
