Not really, I would refer to it as an actual cigarette. Just because the combustion method is different, And/or non existent, doesnt change the fact that it is still a cigarette. Nothing has changed from the makeup of the product. A cigarette(Now coreect me if I am wrong, Philosophy is not my forte) does not only become a cigarette once smoked.

iqos is a cigarette heated with battery current until it vaporizes. Our gear heats juice with battery current until it vaporizes.

If someone is going to call one of these an e-cigarette IMO the iqos is a closer match to the phrase than our gear.

Not that it matters what any of us think anyway, this is all driven by politics (money) at this point. I can guaranty you though that no company will try to call the iQos a cigarette :)

I think Ryedan's point is correct, the iQos is an e/cigarette, much more so than what we use will ever be. It's another example as to why e cigarette isn't the best choice of labels for vaping.

In my mind this iQos could be very useful for our cause. The iQos could be a used to further distinguish tobacco from non tobacco products, same as cigarettes being distinct from patches. No one sees patches as tobacco products. So while the tobacco industry may be trying to blur the lines I don't know that this will actually produce those blurred results, vaping just might gain more clarity as far as defining what vaping is a product.

Well, Yea, Okay, I agree that Vaping should not be labelled as an e-cigarette any more than it should be labelled as a tobacco product.
But since it is and it is...
I wanna distance myself from this.
In the way that our Vaping devices are fully electronic (Alternativs to conventional) Cigarettes, this is more an electronic method of smoking a conventional cigarette. this is a different way to do the same thing, where as vaping is a different, safer product to get the same effects.
I see them as Vastly different, and since E cigarettes are called E cigarettes, and I can see a sort of reasoning to that label, in that its not a cigarette, but it almost is (In that it delivers nicotine and produces smokelike vapor), so lets call it an e-cigarette. But this is not Kinda a cigarette. It IS a cigarette.

From what I have read on the Iqos. They are just starting their marketing in Japan. Probably why you are noticing.

They are not cigarettes in a sense that you can grab a cigarette and put it in it. They call the "heat sticks" which is effectively a "cigarette" laced with PG. Now could one use a cigarette lace it with PG and use? I have no clue. The wording kinda resembles a NET waxy stick. PMI invested 2 billion in this. Each Iqos costs around 87 bucks and the pack of 20 heat sticks cost 6 bucks. The Iqos heats to around 350 C which regular cigarette needs around 800 C. Apparently something different is going on or it is just marketing. Maybe someone smarter than me knows.

Breifly reading PMI's May 6 2015 annual report this grabbed my attention.

"PMI's future profitability may also be adversely affected should it be unsuccessful in its attempts to produce products with the potential to reduce individual risk and population harm; if it is unable to successfully introduce new products, promote brand equity, enter new markets or improve its margins through increased prices and productivity gains; if it is unable to expand its brand portfolio internally or through acquisitions and the development of strategic business relationships; or if it is unable to attract and retain the best global talent."

So it looks like our ecigs have unnerved some people. I am of the mind that they will just buy up the big guys in vaping.

Apparently harm reduction is hitting the big guys. That is a good thing. PMI is excited and test markets are showing promise. If the test market prove successful they will build a plant that is capable of producing 30 billion heat sticks a year. Thats a ton.

I understand what you're saying Spencer. It will certainly be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I agree that this is a bad thing for vapers. Anything that is not vaping that gets associated with vaping is not good for us. I also agree that PMI is trying anything and everything they can to edge out the competition by blurring the lines between smoking and vaping. I agree as well with the idea that their $500m plant in Italy could serve the world and their company by building an extraction plant rather than a new facility to produce a new way to consume their tobacco. They could get into the vaping market by supplying a high quality, low cost nicotine base for juice makers to use and completely corner that market. It seems to me that it would be a cheaper plant to build and would yield a better profit margin.

This is just a revamped version of R.J. Reynold's old (circa 2000 or so) Eclipse cigarette. It was a flop then when we didn't even have e-liquid and it will be a flop now. I have to wonder where they get their ideas from. Somebody's getting paid way too much for junky work.
They're just covering all the bases.

Having said that, I must say that I think this concept is stupid.
Unless of course electronic cigarettes get regulated to the point of being useless.

These things will never supplant electronic cigarettes.
Unless the powers that be cause it to happen by force of regulation.

I understand the reasons why we still call what we vape on "e cigarettes" and this forum "E Cigarette Forum" but if this Iqos ever becomes popular and is referred to as an "e cigarette" then it may be time to call our pvs something else. If it's PMI's underlying motive to further associate vaping with tobacco, it might just backfire and have the opposite effect. As you say, it will make it easier to differentiate vaping from BT's "e cigarette".

I agree, I suppose that could happen in the sense that, when someone asks about my personal vaporizer, and notices it does not contain a cigarette.

Although more than likely, I doubt this will see the light in places where E-cigarettes already have a decent following, It may just remain in areas where e cigs have not gained popularity yet, trying to get in before the better products do, Although I am sure that BT is linng the pockets of Japanese government as well.

Hmm, See as I am reading these posts, I start to think of another Idea that they have maybe.
Vaping has become popular in the USA, and Philippines. Here in Japan, While it is becoming more popular, it is still not very popular. Almost everyone looks at me strangely when I am having a vape, And lots of people ask me about it.
It may be that Phillip Morris is trying to get a foot in the door here before vaping becomes more popular.
Or it could be they are trying to influence the emerging market by saying that they are the same as cigarettes.

As long as the Japan government has a stronghold on peoples beliefs about tobacco, and the fact that any nic juice is unavailable anywhere in Japan forcing people to import nic juice is a major factor in limiting acceptance/growth in Japan.
