With Cotton Less is More.

Maybe that's my problem. I have been trying square braid cotton wick. Works awesome for 3 or 4 toots then I have to let it sit a bit giving the juice time to recoup. I'll pick up some yarn today and give that a whirl. Any suggestion for a particular brand or store?

The "Lily Sugar and Cream" #4 Medium at Michaels is what I am using right now and it seems to work well and no funky taste. Just make sure 100% Cotton whit non merecezed. Its small but it is on the label.

Thanks. There's a Michaels near me so that's what I'll get. I know with candle wicking everyone stated to make sure it's lead free. Any concern for that with yarn?

steeeeeerike one, My first try at ss mesh change over was an epic fail.Broke the poor little guy.

My first attempt was a failure too.
I will say one thing. After playing for a week or so with SS mesh, cotton candle wick and today, cotton yarn I have come to a conclusion for me.
Either I suck at this and don't have a clue ... OR ... there is nothing really much better than most of the silica wicking the Chinese are using. Seriously, can any of you honestly say that your fiddling is without a doubt ending up with a better result than the original. Yeah, it's cool to come up with stuff with your own little fingers, but be honest now. Don't bull.... yourself. If there was something better at the moment ... don't you think the Chinese would be using it?
Everything I have done has worked OK. But nothing impressed me. All I know is not one thing has topped the Phoenix bottom coil, unless I crank up the voltage and then the taste is just too hot for me.
For now I am putting all this wire and mesh and wicking in a little box, whose fate will be later determined, and waiting for my RAVEN's to be delivered.
Call me when you come up with something that tops them.

Wally yes i can honestly say so.
I kept it simple no yarn , no mesh, no cotton , no drilling out any holes, no modifications except making my own coils/wick assembly's cause its cheaper than buying them.
Bought some Kanthal 32gauge A1 res wire, some 999 silver dead soft 30 gauge Nr wire, and some German silica 6 stranded wick of which 3 strands i use in the holes and they comfortably fit without choking the wicking process to the coil.
No metallic taste from coil and no foul taste from the wick .

Put coil together then wet wicks with mouth to a semi point at ends, put through wick holes held one wick taught with 1 hand wrapped wire that came off 1 end of wick on high side to screw post that sits high, then held other wick with hand and wire that comes off wick on low side to the low screw post , adjusted coil/wick by gently pushing down to sit almost on the airhole itself and filled tank with syringe.
Then pre wet the coil/wick.

Now im very familar have vaped them all from arry Ce2 tanks, scubagen tanks, all vision stone tank versions, all vivi nova versions, phoenix bottom coil xl's and can honestly say this smoke tech tank is better than them period.
I have 3 tanks always filled with my own made e-liquids of different flavors in rotation and there all great .

I bought a 200ft roll of kanthal for 12.95 shipped to my house and a 50ft roll of the silver wire at 19 cents a foot along with 4 meters of German silica 6 stranded wick which is like 8 meters cause i only use 3 strands for the tank.
That how much i enjoy this tank i simply do not need any other.

The weakest point to the tank is the wire breaking from the solder joint because they used a wire that's just long enough with no real slack in it to speak off and it simply breaks off if the airtube comes off when taking off the tank itself but i gave it a longer wire to help that as i repaired 1 this way so in case the airtube comes off the wire will not pull of with it.

That's great Dieseler, I am not talking about the SRT particularly, just general rewicking. I will continue to rewick with standard materials. But that's not really changing the original design. Still using silica wicking and wrapping a coil around it. The point I was trying to make, and I probably drifted off like I usually do, is that the original design materials are very very hard to beat. Everyone talks of mesh and this and that but at the end of the day silica does as well if not better. I know China likes to do things on the cheap but if there was a better wick material at this time I believe they would be using it. In fact with all the producers there, they would be fighting to get it out first. For the amount of material that goes in one item the price point would be negligible from their end. Once again, just my :2c:

Silica is just the best compromise and hasn't [yet?] been proven unsafe, so it persists. It is effective and resilient and doesn't have the potential drawbacks of the other contenders. Cotton won't ever make it because it can burn (even though this won't happen when it's wet), and SS may be more susceptible to shorting.

Still, I will not vape silica, and these days even flavors in my juice are becoming more of a rarity for me. I'm currently away from my stash for a few days, and all I brought was unflavored juice along with my bully, a cotton ball and the little spool of Nichrome 80 34ga.

No, I can't honestly say what I have [so far I've tried cotton balls, cheesecloth, and bamboo] blows silica out of the water or something, but I still prefer them for a number of reasons:
- the taste is as good if not slightly better to me (note that best taste is not always found in the first 2-5 ml for some reason)
- they wick better than silica for me
- my throat is less irritated by vaping
- I can tell when they are going dry way before a throat searing dry hit which has not happened yet (the taste will go funny way before your throat ignites)
- finally, I enjoy the peace of mind knowing little shards of silica are one less (ok, potential) thing I have to worry about.

Sure, we all think of vaping as far and away better than cigs, but why would I choose to continue to use something that may be hazardous when I have a readily available supplie of an adequate-or-better replacement that's no harder for me to implement? The only downer I have for cotton is that you have to remove it to dry burn the coil. SS of course is a different story, but I have yet to try that.

Good points Wolcen. The possible safety aspect was what actually got me fiddling in the first place. I guess I am just frustrated not being able to come up with a more effective, efficient solution yet. I'm sure there is one out there. Just a matter of time before someone stumbles across it.

Maybe my impatience is my downfall. If I don't get a good result on the first batch of juice I give it up. I'll try struggling through more than one tank and see if there is an improvement. I do have one mini vivi with a cotton candle wick and it does seem to be getting better. I'll stay on that one and see what happens.

Excellent point about the silica. Although i do not get dry hits and the silica has been excellent i have noticed some tiny particles of wet silica in the mouthpiece of the SRT after the first built coil. I use my jewelers eyepiece to look at everything , course i do rinse it out with each tank fill up. But still not good in my opinion.

As a note i do recall tiny shavings crud when i first inspected my Vivi Nova first edition and was shocked as it was in the bottom portion of the top metal cap, its always wise to wash everything and rinse well first. ; )

I have seasoned and used 400 mesh in the scubagen with excellent results in the past and sold that tank with the mesh cause it was just to big for my everyday use.
But next order i will get some mesh and use that as well and more so as time goes by.

Wally i grew up in that town .
Small world. ; )
