So I finally saw it happen...

A few days ago I noticed a new co-worker of mine was a vaper. He had some kind of old, ratty looking mech with some kind of tank I'm unfamiliar with on top. This guy doesn't strike me as the type of person who would be responsible with a mechanical, but trying not to be judgmental, I kept quiet. So yesterday a friend of mine says "look at that guy, what's he doing?" I look over and see this guy dancing around, frantically pulling everything out of his pocket. Out comes an 18650 battery, with a key WELDED to the end of it, still throwing arcs! By this time, his pants were actually SMOKING!!! We go over there to investigate, and he had put a fully charged battery without any kind of case or covering in his pocket with a bunch of change and his keys. The old ratty battery no longer even had the plastic shrink wrap sleeve on it, just a silver cylinder. When it was cool enough to touch, we examined it, and the positive terminal had completely burned away, and it had burned a hole in his pocket about the size of a half-dollar. After lecturing him about using a battery case, we asked to see the battery in his mod. He pulled it out and it was in worse shape than the one that shorted out in his pocked. No insulated wrap, big gouges in the side, burnt spots on the positive end. All we could do was warn him to get new batteries and go about our business. I have a feeling our warnings fell on deaf ears. I even showed him my little $0.99 battery case. I can understand someone not being completely knowledgeable about all the technical stuff, but isn't this just common sense? Sigh.

Not really. Even regular batteries that we buy in grocery stores will cause a problem in a pocket with keys or change. Just ask my husband.

For most, a battery is just a normal thing that we have been around most of our lives. We don't give them a second thought. I really didn't have a clue about battery safety until vaping and ECF. All I knew was that you don't put them in a pocket or a purse loose, this after hubby's pocket got really warm...

Teach what you can, when you can.

I'm like Robin, until I came here I didn't know anything about battery safety.
Everything I own runs on batteries--I carry a GPS on my person all the time--a GPS locater plus a couple of radios--a cell phone and a laptop in the truck and I don't know what all else.
I used to grab a hand full of AA's and AAA's and just put them in my pocket loose. Along with a pocket full of change for the Timmy's drive-thru, a pocket knife and maybe a couple of 30-30 shells.
I guess I've just been lucky I haven't set myself on fire--I guess the good lord must look after us fools and drunks!
Did I mention I work as a safety officer on a logging crew?

Was supposed to have a team meeting today to discuss 'slips and falls'.
I think I'll change the topic.

Aww don't worry, eventually you won't be

Please take the above in the way in which it was intended, humorously

    Wait a minute now
(pinches self) Yup ... still made up of matter.
Since 'matter can neither be created nor destroyed' (a law of physics) I would guess that you-me & everyone else are part of the matter that make up the planet Earth for ever more. :)

If you leave, the planet will become smaller

So, with all that being said, does it really

    matter?

What seems like common sense to me is apparently NOT for some.

Common sense to me says that anything which stores energy and has an exposed positive and negative terminal shouldn't me thrown into a situation where said terminals can come in contact with something conductive.

I'm all for battery safety, and I know where vaping is concerned, battery safety can be a confusing subject.....but come on. Isn't this common sense? Or am I being too critical of those who aren't considered "mechanically inclined"?

Fact is, we can't completely idiot proof everything. There will always be that one person who's stupidity challenges all reasonable explanation, no matter how simple you make things.
