I think that answer is going to depend on who you ask. Sit and shake always sort of seems to be working out fine for me. Some people use heat steeping to speed up the process, and some folks do seem to think they need less flavor that way. I haven't tried heat steeping, so I can't comment.

I usually place in a dark cupboard, shake periodically (1 or 2 x per day) and sometimes leave top on, other times top off. Usually within a week I'll get a sense of the flavor, in 2 weeks it's pretty well steeped, though my juice continues aging as I start using it....

Simplist ?
Shake and leave alone. The amount of time a mix has to properly amalgamate the flavours will vary depending on what's in it. I leave some of my tobacco flavours for 6 months before vaping them.
Unless i'm using cream flavours that's all i ever do. A 5 minute warm bath for bakery won't hurt but nothing beats leaving the juice alone for a day/week/month before vaping.

@Andrew blocker I found a simple effective way to age and infuse my e-liquids recently when I am not rushing things. I put them under a desk lamp next to my desk which heats the bottles to around 100°F and allows for an occasional shake with ease. Heating mildly speeds the infusion process and using an incandescent lamp there is no UV light which will harm the Nicotine. Never heat Nicotine over 150°F and some say 140°F. Good luck!

I mix at low concentrations and usually find a couple hours or a day is enough to get it 90% there. Additional changes are often an improvement in quality, but subtle. Not only do I not steep anything 6 months, anything old that has become dark gets thrown out. And this is making mostly tobaccos and creamy flavors.

Dark caramel color I will vape but have had some turn almost black and those were in plastic bottles. Never had that happen to any e-Liquids in glass bottles.

I've had several but not DIY that I can remember. Partially the nature of what I make in plastic (e.g. single flavors, tests) vs. glass. I have one here that's gotten worse for sure though.

I had a few forgotten retail e-Liquids turn almost black funny though one still smelled great!
