My entire reason for interest in the RB's and Mechs has to do with possible legislation. I want something in my vapocalypse box that I can keep going a long long time if hardware gets difficult to get. I have no interest whatsoever in sub ohm stuff.

9/10 I use protank or carto tanks.

When I first started vaping I was shocked and amazed how well it worked for me and kept me of the ciggys. Within a week I saw the gloom and doom posts about the future of vaping. I have been building up the stockpile since. If the disaster happens I will be prepared. If not I will be able to vape on the cheap for a long long time.

I am not so sure some of these new vapors diving into the deep end don't feel like I did.

after 3+months, i'm thinking about my first mech and i picked up a cheap RDA and tried my hand at building a coil for it the other day. not sub-ohm, and maybe cos it's a cheap dripper, it tasted like garbage. i'll try it again soon, but give it some time before i go back to it. i picked it up cos i'm doing more DIY juice and want something to drip and taste.

for the most part, i'm content with my vamos and my protanks/evods/iclears. my girl is happy with her ego batts and the iclears/evods/vivi novas. told her if she wanted she could have my vamo v2, but she just wants simple egos.

and that's fine. i would like to test out a mech or two in the future, just to see what the fuss is all about.

i see these youtube vids of these dudes blowing huge clouds. but they don't really show what they're doing, what they're building, and they certainly don't say one whit about safety.

it seems all for show. its like all they want to do is show off their big billowy clouds of vapor and their shiny rigs. i never hear them talk about flavor. its like the ppl who have to have the nicest cars, the fanciest clothes, expensive watches and jewelry, but live in a $#!+hole house. out and about they show off, but they'd never let anyone know where or how they actually live. again, it's all for show. and in playing around with my webcam, i've noticed quite a bit of generating the thick clouds is the ambient room temp, humidity, airflow and lighting. it's not always as it seems in video.

not my scene. i like a little bit of cloud from my vape, sure. but i don't have to fog out the room. i'd rather enjoy the taste and some satisfaction of blowing out a nice bit of vapor. i don't need to be a showoff.

but to each their own. some ppl are impressed with that stuff, and want to emulate it. if that's what they want from vaping, so be it. but i don't want to be around them when they blow their face or their hand off cos they have no grasp of what they're doing.

I just couldn't let this go on. The loud clock ticking was killing me.... But seriously, using the "Search" box I found countless threads and stickies on these topics but here are a few that should be read before jumping too far out there without know exactly what they are getting into. I know for me it took me about a month of reading before I even made my first purchase past the Njoy!!! Now granted, I am waaay past the disposables but I have a steady rotation of my egos and clearos (my humble beginnings) to my APVs and drippers (my happy place). But none of this would have even been possible if I didn't do what should be done by all and that's read the basics. QUick rant, folks need to stop watching Youtube vids of cloud chasers with sub-ohm coils blowing smokestack plumes which leads to some folks having cloud envy and wanting to dive into a vaping sub culture before understanding the very basics. We all had to crawl before we walked, and walked before we ran.

i like steam turbine's thread titles. they are just troll-y enough to get bites, but they almost always seem to be relevant, spot on, and thoughtful. so often i look at the title and think, 'hey that's a rather pr*ckish thing to say', but then look at the thread starter, and read what steam has to say. i'm very seldom disappointed...

I'm in this camp (except for the 3 years part, I haven't been at it nearly that long). I design and build electronic gadgets for a living and I could probably DIY some crazy vape gear if I really wanted to. But I don't really feel the need to get bigger/hotter vapor and more "hit" than I was getting from a cigarette. I don't imagine that it could be very good for you to suck in vapor that's above a certain temperature, anyway. I look at some of these extreme PVs and I think there's definitely a "macho factor" involved - but hey, whatever floats yer boat, I always say. I just hope people don't blow themselves up because not only would it suck for the people involved, but it would be a gift to sensationalistic news outlets and the anti-vaping crowd.

I never thought in this world i would get into Mechs/RBA`S,but i took the plunge and never looked back.I was drove crazy the first few weeks of trying too get it too work,the problem was i had was i only had 28 ga wire and it wouldnt fire on the Vamo unless i had 10 wraps and i was getting hots spots galore,and the .8 ohm Aga wouldnt fire on my Smok Telescope.So i got the Natural Telescope and i hit a home run.I found out later the reason why the .8ohm wouldnt fire on the Smoke Tely,the 510 post was sunk in,now i have 2 Telelscopes working great and one more baby on the way.

Not slow at all, after 3 years myself (took me a few months to find ECF - that's slow..)

I figured out how to make a 801, Mega-EGO attys, original CE-2, blue foam, etc enough to get a nice vape put of them. When I tried some RBA I knew what I was aiming for as far a heat, flavor, vapor. Adjusting a coil (2.0 to 3.0 ohm) on my RBA with SS, cotton, boiled twine, gauze, or ecowool and wicking just enough to supply the coil without flooding seems second nature now.

As a noob getting a visible exhale of vapor from my 401 cig-a-like was nirvana, didn't know any better.

I know that all the information that's needed to be known is here on ECF. That's mostly where I educated myself about pretty much all I know about vaping, it's joys and it's dangers.

As Orb Skewer demonstrated, the information is not obviously obtainable.

I think there should be information in the New Members Forum itself. Where, coincidentally, all new members are forced to start in.

I agree, ST. Might be even better to have an index to the stickies - in New Members Forum, of course. Some forums have so many stickies that they might as well be buried in some 40 page General thread. It's heck to need information, only to remember that there is a perfect stickie out there. Somewhere's.

I do suggest a sticky on this though. Most newbies should not start out with RBAs on mechanical devices.

Steam - I just started reading this thread and want to first agree with Truncheon - your threads make me take notice and I always love the "read." I really like your reference to Baditude's blogs too. My first journey into Carto Tanks (after six months of vaping), his blogs helped tremendously - and my recent voyage into RBA's has been no different - read, read, read and have the equipment available and knowledge to use it.

I am beginning to dislike YouTube videos as the title peaks interest in a certain subject, then the video lacks content and most of the time any type of instruction, the footage is out of focus and jumpy (makes me dizzy!) When I need help in a certain area I tend to seek out members posts who have proven to be knowledgeable and experienced.

Just wanted to say Thanks for your Threads!

Unless I missed it scanning the 4 pages so far, am I the only one to note the irony of this post coming from someone that joined two months ago? Or that most of the supporting discussion is coming from others just as new?

I get it that many will lurk for months or even years before actually joining. Just an observation, nothing personal. That is all, carry on

Most new vapers tend to want something that doesn't stand out. They buy slim ecigs and find the same issues we did. Low battery life and weak vapor. Still, it gets them past the quitting stage with cigarettes.

Then, they start looking at what others are vaping and move to something with VV and more battery life. That's fine because we all need backups in case our main vape dies for some reason.

These days there are so many posts about so many variations that it's no surprise that newer vapers are taking the advice in the new members forum and starting off with something a little more robust.

It wasn't that complicated. Just a humorous swipe at the irony. I never said I didn't do that when I first got started LOL.

I think we all tend to follow the same story cycle. We discover vaping and then go on a (enthusiastic? expensive? consuming?) quest to find something as satisfying as smoking. All the while, sharing and advising here while looking for other possible solutions for ourselves. Then after sufficient dollars and time, eureka! We discover the magic combination of hardware and flavor. And we stop. Until that doesn't work like it did to begin with and we repeat the cycle, starting with re-engaging here on this forum.

I was just pointing that out with my 20/20 hindsight LOL.

Funny. I call it the no good deed goes unpunished problem. Eventually he'll get tired of even newer people criticizing his posts and move on for a while. Only to return when the magic vapor gets less magic and he comes back looking for something new LOL.

My first coil was 0.7 ohms (wasn’t properly done so it dropped down to 0.4 ohms). I was just lucky to have been sold a efest IMR 18650 and a xtar intelligent charger by the brick n mortar I bought this thing from. I didn't know squat, could have been an unprotected li-on and crappy charger, I wouldn’t have known the difference. I happily over-discharged these babies while saying to myself: “This is an AWESOME vape!!!!”

Result = 2 dead High drain Efest IMR 18650. Imagine what could of happened if I had random batteries.

Education, IMO, is almost as valuable as experience.

Kind of reminds me of the other recent thread about batteries shorting out in keys or pocket change. That'll learn you. I realize we all weren't superstars in science class. So the advice is good to have.

PS - Cool avatar. I like those images that point back to the time when smoking and neckties were pretty common in public. I am just barely old enough to remember seeing that on the history channel of course LOL

Education is key. I did something similar a month ago which taught me to always have batteries in a case when I am out and about. I threw my spare battery into my cars ashtray not realising I had left a few coins in there. Placed my mod in there a few minutes later and what do you know? I completed a circuit! Ruined the spare battery and almost burnt my hand on the mod. It is simple safety issues like this that can bring anyone undone.
