Water vapor will not set off a smoke detector.
I Googled "water vapor smoke alarm" and it looks to me like vapor will indeed set off a smoke detector.

Here's an example from the City of Roswell Fire Department...
SMOKE DETECTORS FOR LIFE!

Detectors which are too close to a bathroom may give false alarms when water vapor from a shower reaches them. The detectors "read" particles and cannot distinguish between smoke particles and water particles.

There are basically two types of smoke detectors: Ionization (which measures particles) and photoelectric (which measures anything in the air). The ionization ones usually aren't sensitive to steam, although condensation or humidity can build up on the unit itself. The photoelectric ones are easily set off by steam (or fog) or anything in the air. Basically, if you can see it the machine can see it.

Interesting. I did not know that. Though I still stand by my contention that there is a minimal, but extant, amount of smoke--that is, suspended particulate matter separate from water molecules--created by vaping. For whatever that's worth. At some point hopefully we shall all know exactly what it is that we are inhaling. It's not cured tobacco, so it's hard to imagine that it is any worse and is almost certainly significantly "better" than the cancer sticks.

I stopped smoking once before with a nicotine inhalator but it ultimately failed because I like smoking. Now I use my PV instead of burning tobacco. It works for me because I think I am smoking - I will leave it up to the scientists re whether I am or not - but I have cut out around 4000 dangerous chemicals that were increasing my chances of dying before my sons grow up.

I don't consider myself as a smoker now because, when people ask me if I smoke they're usually asking if I smoke tobacco.

However, I do follow up with 'I now use a nicotine inhaler' which seems to make my doctors very happy.;)

This is good, Cas, to tell the uninformed that it is a "nicotine inhaler." So many people really don't know about e-cigs and in some instances, that is an excellent way to describe it.

I do look forward to my next doctor visit and tell her about this; I am curious about doctors' reactions.

That's exactly how I've described it to my coworkers - a nicotine inhaler

It's funny how 'nicotine inhaler' seems more acceptable & if you drop the 'nicotine' bit people are even more accommodating
