I just built a new coil and took pics so I'll post. Btw...I have the airflow drilled out so it's pretty open. 20141018_130206.jpg

On that old coil , would you get dry hits above a certain wattage? What power level?

Reason I ask is if the tails are too dense through the slots they will be choked off. While the rayon will still work; the coil will be starved enough to cause premature gunking.

Most of us thin the tails substantially. In your last pic from the side you can see how pinched off the rayon was in the slots. This is a no no with rayon. The size it was pinched to is the size you need the tail.

I would thin the tails through the slots by ~50%, so the rayon is really light going through the slots. So it feeds effortlessly and keeps the coil super wet. Don't worry unless there's a huge open gap in the slot it shouldn't flood.

I think choking the tails was your main problem!!! Good thing easy to fix after the build.

Either way, I usually do it dry, but same can be done wet. Use a needle to separate half of it kinda comb it through till you get it separated. It's much harder wet but possible. Pull it up and snip it.

This is how thin I go on my dripper tails. Yours will be different but you can see that you don't need full tails to wick.

I'll give it a shot thanks again.

Yes, don't give up on the rayon with Taifun. It is a great combo. I have been using these together for so long that coils and wicking have become second nature to me. I can't thank Jeremy enough for getting to try rayon, when you get it right then you won't leave.

I rewicked it earlier. I had a little trouble separating half of the strand because I twisted it a bit to get it in the coil. It might be easier to cut it at and angle. I'll play with it a bit. I have a 1.0-1.1 ohm spaced coil in theregards now. So far so good but it still burns dry if I run the wattage up past 25. This isn't really an issue for me as I usually run it below 15. I was just wondering if that was a sign that I still have the tails roo thick.

Well depending on your draw that could be normal.

Yes I should have said cutting it at an angle wold work also..

I would say that you need to focus on not pinching the tails at all they should fit nicely in the slots with no shoulders.

Run this one out and see how long it goes. Then make further adjustments after you inspect the wick.

I have a feeling your going to be getting up to 30 with this one, maybe more. Them improve the next one to get you further .

So far I'm about 12 mils in and not a hint of burnt taste. Time will tell how long it'll go but it's an improvement for sure. Do you do the spaced coil on dripper as well? Why does every one seem to prefer the coils touching? FYI, I rewicked my big dripper last night with rayon and thinned the tails. I had cotton in there before and would get dry hits after about a 5 second draw on 0.3 ohms @ 50 watts. Not getting that with the rayon and thinned tails.

Good to hear ashron. The touching coil is easier to work with. I switched because the micro' touching coil gunked up much faster for me. We had a lengthy discussion recently in the rayon thread. You can do a thread search there - " hot spot in the middle" , it's the second result in the search. Well I did. It so here's the link if you want to read the debate.. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...highlight=Hit+spot+in+the+middle#post14250046

I'm sold on the spaced coil. For me, with the thinner tails on the rayon in my taifun gt, I'm getting better flavor and vapor. Right now I'm around 25 mils into this wick and no burnt flavor, dry hits, or leaking. The vapor is nice, but I'm floored by the flavor this combo is putting out. I'm vaping black and blue something (cheesecake maybe, don't have the bottle in front of me) from itc vapes and the flavor is amazing. Thanks for the suggestions Jeremy!

Very good to hear!!!

Same things I've found. I've been on spaced coils since I tested it up against a 'micro'.

Let us know how long it lasts for you over in the rayon thread too! Your now officially a member.:)

I have been moving to spaced coils except for the Orchid which has a very small area to build upon. The spaced coil seems to stay cleaner for a longer period of time and I can't tell a vape "quality" difference when using rayon. I have found nothing easier or more satisfying to use than a Taifun wicked with rayon. I have found that an M-1 screw held by a needle nose vice grip works well to evenly space the wraps.
To the spacers, are you torching the wire before making the coil? Why or why not?

To be honest I didn't torch the last couple before wrapping. But feel it does help because you take that initial warp out before it's coiled. You know how the coil can sometimes deform when heat if first applied to the wire.

Many times after pulling rayon through I do re-space the coils evenly with a needle. My standard spacing is a medium needle. A great way to make a spaced coil is to wrap it spaced wide on the bit keeping the angle of the wraps even. Then compress it together quick and it leaves a nice even spacing.
