That's a meaningless criticism. Funding for the police is mandatory too. Funding for every government program is mandatory to one degree or another.

The bottom line? No congress, Democrat or Republican controlled, is ever going to approve universal mandatory public service. The only reason it gets bandied around is that 1) several other western nations have such service and 2) initial over reaching is how government officials get to workable bills. They reach for the stars and then have their legislation pulled back down to earth. If they start with their feet on the ground, the legislation gets buried. Creating hysteria over the prospect of mandatory service is a little silly, IMO, because there's no chance in hell that it'll ever happen.

People need to be more aware of what the senate is doing, not just with stuff that is directly or could have a direct effect on what they are doing. HR 1388 has already passed and they took the mandatory wording out of it and stuck it into HR 1444 which seems to have been dropped for now but who knows!?

I'm just saying pay attention to your gov't I had no idea about Hr 1388 even existing NO NEWS coverage on it that I saw anyway.

This being passed in its pretty ribbon and bows doesnt set well with me at all esp some of the things volunteers cannot do while being a volunteer.

The bill clearly states that it's an expansion of AmeriCorps. It's a volunteer program. Service under AmeriCorps is not mandatory.

Specifies topics to be addressed by the Commission, including deterrents to service, a mandatory service requirement, and the need for a public service academy

I'm waiting to see how bis a pack of cigarettes are going to be!! I heard part of the new rules they must print on the packages ALL the ingredients. Thats a big list for a small package

I suspect they'll just include a little fold-out pamphlet in each pack. I still think the coolest freebie I ever bought in my pack of Marlboro's was a flat, metal bottle opener. If they can get THAT in a pack of cigarettes, they'll figure out a way to include a list of ingredients.

Yeah, I saw that language, and it's basically why the bill was DOA. If you look at all the bills that come before congress, you'll see all sorts of frightening stuff. But every bill that goes before the body doesn't get passed, let alone passed in anything resembling its initial form.

The point I made stands. There's no way in hell that this nation is going to pass a mandatory public service act.

There are more productive things to be afraid of than some language in a bill that was bound to be removed before passage. Watch C-SPAN. Read Thomas.loc.gov. All sorts of frightening stuff passes through Congress every session. If I were you, I'd be more worried about getting hit by a car than about the government passing mandatory public service. Only one of those things has any realistic prospect of ever happening.

In a "good" democracy "you have more freedoms within the law" can be an accurate statement. But in corrupt democracies such as Zimbabwe - well, it seems from what I have read and purely imho only that if you exercise your right to vote there you can end up maimed or dead. So in the end it all depends upon the nature and quality of the law.
