I have been looking at the artistic coilers; generic, basic, deluxe & professional and have only found one with a 3mm rod. I primarily use 2.5mm & 3.0mm I.D. coils for my builds and was wondering if anyone has tried other rods that haven't come with the coiler. I have looked at piano wire, rc car stainless steel axles and plane wing struts as possible alternatives. Is there enough "give" in the diameter of the holes on the coilers to accommodate rods of sizes that didn't come with the coiler?

Things get quiet around here on the weekends 2lm. If you can do an advanced search on super_X_drifter's posts keyword gizmo and rod. He's added a lot of info on this. I've got my own little contraption and can only wind 2.5mm on it. But now I'm needing a fat wind solution too.

Good luck.

:)

Yes there is plenty of room in the holes and I have bent my own rods out of .055" (small diameter) piano wire. I can measure the largest hole when I get home later but I will tell you that the large rods that come with the 5 rod version are HUGE. Can't imagine an application fora vaping coil for anything beyond the smallest 3 rods :)

And speaking of gizmos... I found this professional edition of the Artistic Wire Gizmo, which seems to be a combination of Super's Deluxe edition and Mac's pin vise, and looks a bit like Bill's rig. ;)

I'm intrigued, and since I can't get a perfectly tensioned coil from my pin vise, no matter how hard I try, I thought this might be a solution. Please let me know what you think. Has anyone tried it? I was very close to getting the Deluxe version until I found this:

The biggest holes are right around 5mm :)

True that K, but that honey's industrial strength with that chuck.

Supe wouldn't it be possible to adapt a slightly higher duty chuck to your Gizmojiggy?

:D

Good luck all.

That one looks a bit closer to mine. Where is that for sale? Do you know? I need to buy a gift for a friend. Thanks! :)

Why the hell is that gizmo thing so complicated? You don't need all those wingnuts, thumbscrews, washers, and crazy bends in the handle. All it needs is 2 bends to form a simple "Z" shaped crank handle, and a pinhole drill-pressed through the rod in the middle of the "Z". Feed an inch of coil wire through the pinhole and give it a 90 degree bend. Thats all it would take to keep the wire affixed to the crank handle while you turn it to form the coil.

How so? The extra bracket, the one without the chuck, can be placed anywhere--or not used at all. The mandrels are long, but they can be shortened. And anyway, the only mandrel that might be of use to me in that set is 2.5mm one.

I thought I could use any size rod, drill bit, nail, what have you, with that chuck, and make any diameter coil. With the deluxe gizmo, I'm limited to one size--the 1/16'.

Anyone with access to a drill press could make a simple jig like this in their garage.
View attachment 412527

just add a couple spacers like this on the rod and you can even squeeze the coil together as you wrap it.

But, what the hell do I know.....I've never even made a coil.

I have seen some really nice DIY Coiling Gizmos with chucks and stuff. For a while, there were lots of plans floating around. I haven't seen them in a while.

so now I'm working on making a tension jig to see if it'd make any noticable difference for me. the way I have always made coils is pretty easy for me but something like this could make it even easier I guess, plus I kinda dig what russ has going on with the reel providing an adjustable drag against the wind, just peaked my interest and sparked ideas :)

I don't normally build at a desk or table that I could clamp a jig to & I can't see me reeling in a coil like captain Ahab with a fishin' rig like that either :p, so I want to make a compact portable stand alone thing that could be used on any flat surface or even just held in my hand and then easily tucked away. I decided to start with a block of 1" X 2" billet aluminum as a base. going to cut it down and just use a piece from this full block. I made a delrin adjustable drag mount made specifically sized for a temco wire roll. it's key slotted to the aluminum base so it won't rotate loose against the high rotating force and it's pressed into a matching keyed hole in the aluminum block, it has a steel threaded insert for the adjustment bolt. the delrin has a really low coefficient of drag, especially when riding against the delrin of the wire spool itself, so assembled it's a really nice smooth consistent drag against the tension. I can adjust it from a light to a very heavy pull against the wind. tension is obviously adjusted by tightening or loosening the center screw and it works really excellent. thought I might need a spring or a cone or something more than just this simple setup but truth is it just works perfect as-is

so that's the base tension part. now I just have to do a wire retainer clamp and wire guide and then the coil wrapping part :)

I hear ya Jef :) it is a weird shape but I think that with the amount of tension im putting on that beast, the nuts and screws and nut is needed. Trust me when I tell ya that Arnold (back in the day) couldn't pull that wire off the spool and even if he could it would leave severe lacerations.

I agree that it seems a simpler shape would be better but screw is definitely required :)

I like it in theory much better than the standard one, trust me. I like the whole more manly look of that handle and chuck - it's beast but for one there's no where to fix the wire like in the standard one. One could fashion a bit with a bend for the hardware but it would need to be perfect so that chucked part aligned with the shaft part or it would be all over the road when the handle was cranked. It's meant for straight rods.

My personal preference is to not chuck the wire and deal with (remove) starter wraps and try to straighten legs.

But Ima say again that it was hard to resist getting it when I saw it but when I thought about it for a while I just found that the lil ol standard deluxe model better suited my needs. :)

I do have to straighten one leg after... :( But, it's all good. :)
