I just found a less "computer 101" explaination of what a 540 error is for those that don't already know... this definition further shows how much "smoke" was trying to be blown up our skirts with the post roly made...

Quoting from about.com...

Cause of 504 Gateway Timeout Errors

The 504 Gateway Timeout error is an HTTP status code that means that one server did not receive a timely response from another server that it was accessing while attempting to load the web page or fill another request by the browser.

This usually means that the other server is down or not working properly.

How To Fix the 504 Gateway Timeout Error

The 504 Gateway Timeout error is usually a network error between servers on the Internet or an issue with an actual server, meaning the problem is not with your PC or Internet connection.Even though the issue is not yours to troubleshoot or resolve, there are a few things you can do:

I quit quoting where they are just telling you to retry later and similar steps... none of which can actually fix the cause because the error is on the server side of things... not on the client ( our computers we are browsing with )

For people who are lucky with their ISP, ECF pages load in 3 seconds. That is the core speed of the site: 3 second pageload speeds. There is little we can do to speed that up, and no point anyway.

The problems are caused by the social media integrations, which strangle the pageloads for people with ISPs that can't handle the myriad of external site connections needed. You can be 10 miles away from someone getting 3-second pageloads, with a different ISP, and get 8-second pageloads; another 10 miles further and get 30-second pageloads - or timeouts.

We can't do without the social media as that is part of the site structure. What we could do is find a way to defer loading all this other stuff until the ECF page has loaded. That is what we will try to do.

At present, for some people in some areas, when the social media integrations don't load (for example when the Facebook app crashes), the page fails. This is because the social media scripts come in the header or top of the pagecode - they start loading first. We need to find a way to defer them for 5 seconds or similar. Apparently this is difficult in the current version of vBulletin that we use, but we'll have to find a way around it since the social media is unlikely to be removed.

All I can suggest right now is find some way to block the scripts, if DNS IP swaps don't work for you.

It's not page load time that is the problem. It's the time it takes for the ECF servers to do anything.

In Firefox, lower left, it says "Waiting for e-cigarette-forum.com" and the tab icon spins BLACK. And it spins. And it spins... waiting and waiting.

Once the connection is made, it THEN says "Transferring data" (the page load) and the tab icon spins green. Poof! The page is there.

It's the "Waiting" piece that's the problem.

Not page load time.

very few, lis - i close out all icons not necessary .....

it seems to be a fruitless attempt. very few members will complain if the forum runs slow. most will just give up and use ecf as little as possible.

if this would have been going on back in febr of 2010 when i joined, i would not be here today.

By Upgrading to the newest version of software, Did the social media buttons have an option to use them(or not) yes or no????

(If so) couldn't you have chosen the NO, or gone with a different version of software that did not have these??

Obviously the decision here is/was a firm yes, and the power to be aren't to be moved or swayed.

Right now I have less than 3 seconds load time and my internet speed is 0.786 mb/s

Why should that matter? Right now 2 and one is my in system pic folder the other FF....
I don't see how that relates?

Toolbars make no difference, it's the FB component of this site. It is part of the vBulletin forum software and can't be removed. You can block scripts on some browsers.

If I was running a Windows PC I would look at Chrome web browser.
I disagree and will get a screen shot of another v Bulletin site for you, to prove it..
Adding: the site I went to did in fact have it and I apologize.
I would like to point out that a Google search on vBulletin removing facebook nets reasonable answers to removing this. As well as the face that it is an older version ECF may be running and thus needs to be updated....

And to Roly, the add block you suggested no-script, is designed to block adds???? The scripts that create them...
Adds that add sites make money from and pay for will no longer be seen.
Do you or the Add companies want that???? Keep the social link to Facebook and no advertizing?
The answer is for me to block adds/scripts????:2c:
