I was a little late getting these and really have not read what others have posted here to date. Nothing special it is just the way I do things.
Background
Since I developed a sensitivity to PG I only use 100% VG liquids now. Because I cannot get the proper ratios of VG to distilled water from commercial sources, I roll my own. All my liquids are diluted by 20% with distilled water which renders a viscosity similar to all PG liquids. They wick and flow well in all my equipment, including cartos.
IMO VG does not reduce throat hit perse, well at least not to the extent of some of the reports out there. Since I mix my own liquid VG has not masked the flavour as well. Mind you I did increase my flavouring 1-2% on some of the more delicate flavours. All my raw tobacco flavours contain 3% Ethyl Maltol, this addition takes away the perceived dryness away from the vape and provides a fuller more rounded vape, without adding "sweetness".
Both attys metered at 3.5 Ohms and are capable of functioning up to 6 volts. For my first impressions test, I am rocking 'em on a 5V GLV2 armed with AW RCR123s 750mAh batteries. I chose this device as it fires at 4.9V under load providing me with 7.1 watts (my sweet spot). I am accustomed to the device. Caveat the GLV does not deliver what I deem is a normal 5V, it hits stronger (shorter pulls) but YMMV.
Test
I metered the atty, primed it with 8 drops of 18mg RY4 100%VG liquid. I allowed the atty to soak for a minute or so and took a toot. I felt my mouth filling with vapour almost immediately. I only took a 2 second pull and was rewarded with great vapour and flavour and a decent throat hit. I dripped 2 more drops and vaped away.
It is a juice hog. 1 drop is said to be good for 5-6 hits. 2 drops equates to 6-8 hits for me before I notice a drop in production. I have ran this atty for most of the day yesterday. Topping off with 2 drops and vaping until performance dropped. I was constantly getting about 8 hits. Tooting 5-6 sessions per hour I thought I would sooner or later flood the atty. Nope! I have yet to flood it, vaping it as prescribed above.
Change up
As you know I cannot vape the same liquid all day long, so I alternated with several others during the day. All 18mg and 100% VG. I have yet tor try is with menthols as menthol will linger in an atty. Changing flavours was a breeze between BlueMist's Robacco and my Drum Tobacco. After 2-3 pulls the new flavour was delivered and no traces of the previous flavour were detected during subsequent sessions

I used my "Drum" mix for good reason, it has a lingering flavour. For those who have smoked Drum Tobacco you know what I mean. Nonethless, is dissipated quickly as well, well within the first session.
I report this observation because I have not experience this with other attys I have used. Is it important? Perhaps not. Some folks never use their attys for a single flavour and choose to vape through the previous flavour. I particularly did not like to do that, and always dedicated attys to single flavours until I experienced the 306 line, where changing flavours was a breeze. Hence why I decided ti try these out.
Peformance
This atty performed straight out of the box on the first pull, where it delivered great vapour and full flavour. This type of performance has made me an
extremely finicky vaper when it come to equipment, and a benchmark for others to emulate. This is a little fog machine, a word I do not use liberally.
Flavour 4.5
TH 3.5
Vapour 4.5/4.75
Aesthetics
What can be said about aesthetics? Well, many did not like the size of the 801. That has been remedied here with the shorty/mini and the midi. For the folks who love the 801 vape this atty delivers it along with the "heat" associated with the 901. The latter is accomplished by the positioning of the coil relative to the vaper, its in your face so to speak in comparison with the standard 801s, 302s or BE112s. *The top of the bridge is a mere 4mm from the top of the atty.
Pros:
- it performs straight out of the box;
- doesn't seem to require a break in period;
- it is short, only 4mm longer than a 510 ((not including skirt (skirt = 4.5mm));
- each atty is etched with resistance IKV HV (IkenVape std); and
- provides the flavour and vapour production of an 801, the throat hit of the 510 and the warmth of the 901. A dripper's dream atty.
The last entry is significant to folks that have vaped the various attys. Each one of the aforementioned attys has its pros and cons. The 901 delivered the heat and flavour but at the cost of throat hit. This atty delivers the best of all three.
Cons:
- will not accept standard 801 driptips, they hit the bridge prior to being fully seated. This can be remedied by adding 2mm to their length, leaving 1mm between the DT and bridge;
- not recommended for tailpiping, although many use it this way;
- these 801s are known to boil/pop occasionally when new and unseasoned. This is not a major drawback, but a definite flaw should someone be tailpiping them and a bubble burst and liquid is flung to the back of ones throat;
- removal of the whistle tip for dripping; and
- these attys cannot use carts. Not really a negative, but for those who use carts, these are dripping attys only.
Conclusion
As with all IkenVape atomizers allot of R&D has taken place with the intention of delivering the perfect vape. Prior to us BETA testers receiving these, they are developed by Isaac and once found suitable, a small production run is sent out for testing. This is where the data is collected and tweaking carried out prior to a full run. So it is not uncommon to see the reviews on their performance in the upper reaches of vaping Nirvana, the bugs have been previously worked out. This attention to detail is 2nd to none. Do I sound like an advertisement? The constantly bare shelves at IkenVape speaks volumes over what I may say here. Word is spreading like wildfire, that is why the shelves are bare
For the new folks visiting us, I recommend you subscribe to IkenVape's newsletter. It is free and gives you a head start on the shelves being stocked, prior to seeing it announced here. Hey it's a win win situation. Why do you think the shelves empty so quickly, it is not our reviews, its product performance
A follow up at 6V will follow along with an overall product follow up.
