okay so that makes more sense. so if I put the liquid in to an empty 510 cart, it won't just leak out then?

I think I will try this as i'm not having much luck with the original filling and straw mod.

You see the two small holes on the side of your cart? Those are where the vapor travels from the atty to the part you suck out of...often times I have found that if I have that gurgling sound, if you gently blow into the mouthpiece, you push the fluid in those vents back down to the atty where it can be properly vaporized.

On track with the OP, I am going to have to figure out something for my 601...maybe two pieces of foam (still gotta find some around here). My fear is that if the cart floods on the 601, that is nearly 3ml of juice dumped on the atty.

I wouldn't recommend blowing on the mouthpiece while it's still attached to the atty, especially if it's already flooded. You'll blow juice right through the atty and out the batt/atty connection, causing it to leak all over the sides. Removing the mouthpiece and blowing into it can help with juice-in-mouth issues, though I recommend popping the end piece off completely and mopping up any juice that's accumulated in the buffer compartment.

The mouthpiece is set up like a cup within a cup, with the outside cup having the vent holes. The liquid goes in the inside cup and is wicked into the atty chamber by the bridge. The vapor from the atty chamber then travels AROUND the inside cup, through the side vents and down to the outside cup, which has the hole to release the vapor into the user's mouth.

Look at this diagram:
Strawplug-2.jpg

The grey area is where the liquid is. The vapor travels down along the channels outside of that chamber into the mouthpiece, where the hole is.

I've used as many cart mods as I could find at ECF for my 510. I stopped several places tonight and found some 3mm straw/coffee stirrers. I've been emptying my carts all night without any of the usual complications. I'll still look for the 2mm straws but I'm quite impressed with your mod to this point. The 3mm straw sticks in the 510 CART. Thanks for the pics and exacting measurements, it really makes life easy.

Great Mod:thumbs:

You're very welcome. It worked so well for me I just had to share it. :)

Funny you should say that. I was having problems with different liquids using the blue foam just like before (posted about size changes previously on this thread). I just went to Hobby Lobby today and bought:

Mountain Mist
Smart Foam
Hi-Density Polyester Cushion

Smart Foam Pad | Hobby Lobby

It was a bit pricey because the smallest I could get was 22x22x2 inches thick ($13). But it's about 8 layers thick of the size you need and is easily pulled apart. It's actually the stuff in the cart, but in a layered fashion kinda like plywood. Can't explain it, but it's VERY easy to cut and stays together well while placing it in and out of the cart with this mod. I have enough for the city of Dallas, TX to share. Basically, it's this mod, but using a rectangular piece that is the size of the hole in the cart but is the length of this mod .. shoved into a small straw. Been using it since about noon today and really like it. No exact measurements needed ... just trim off the top flush with the cart after putting it in there.

I've found 3mm works just fine as a substitute for 2mm, for the most part; I've only made one BFD, but it's wicked dry thrice without problems. I'm still having some mental issues with the possible polyurethane issue (if that is indeed what the foam is made of), so I may give "good old polyfill" a try if it does work - lord knows I've got plenty sitting here just in old carts..

This is actually ingenious, it utilizes capillary action to feed the blue foam which then takes care of wicking. This is my first post but I assure you I have plenty of experience and have tried most if not every single mod for the 510 google can produce. This is so simple and effective which just proves that overcomplicating something is a sure fire way to screw it up. Anyway, great and effective idea. Two thumbs for sure. BTW, thanks pete and everyone one else who participated in the compilation of information and ideas that led to and makeup the best forum on PVs bar none.

Thanks l2eNt. It's funny but I think a lot of folks are just tired of trying all these cart mod variations so they have not actually given this method a try. I don't blame them as I have a drawer full of every imaginable kind of filler and tools from previous attempts. I don't know why this works so well but every day I leave the house with 3 carts full and I usually come home with two completely empty carts and one on my PV. It just keeps working perfectly.
One note on maintenance. I find that cleaning the darts and carts every other refill under running water and drying them with a paper towel helps a lot.

Well you know how it was at first, it was all new and exciting and modding was fun. Then you get to where you just want to vape and it work right. I stopped by the gas station this evening on the way home and bought a cup of coffee and grabbed about a dozen 2mm stir sticks and in the morning I am going to fix my wife and I a few of them up.

Another adjustment I use is that depending on the thickness of your juice you may want to trim it down a bit. I find that NHaler's juice is so thick you need a smaller head on it. I've experimented by continually trimming one down until it leaked. As long as the foam is a little bit bigger than the opening, it doesn't leak.

Edit: I don't know why but 2 of the pics from the first post have disappeared. Oh well ....

You know it's funny but I've been vaping for a little over 4 months now and I've only lost 2 atty's. I bought a load of them expecting them to die but they keep on living!
I use a BB at 6v and I just received a Prodigy V2 at 5v and I have not lost an atty yet. With practice you can actually taste when the cart is about to run out. Occasionally I do get a mouthful of awful but for the most part this mod keeps the atty really moist.

Pete, I bet a lot of people have read your thread, and like me, have been remiss in not giving you any feedback.

So I just want to let you know that I tested the BFD mod out on an m401 for a few days. After a bit of minor tweaking of straw size and foam size and shape, it was working well enough that I decided to convert all my PTB (folded, rolled and frayed) carts to your mod. I'm liking it for the fact that it uses up a minimal amount of space in the cart, allows for both good liquid and air transport (translating to throat hit and flavor), and has an added bonus that it's a hell of a lot less messy to refill than either the PTB or the other blue foam mods I've tried.

Thanking you for your simple and effective idea. And you can't beat that BFD acronym! lol

So are you just using standard atomizers?

Modded yesterday and ran a full test day. I must say again this is the best cart mod that I have tried, it's perfect. I also had to do some tweaking on the width of the foam to compensate for the juice thickness but after three or four trys I had my measurements and I converted all of my wife and my carts to the BFD mod. Thanks again.
