Good luck even finding stuff online right now. I was just offered $800 for 1k rounds of 5.56mm. Not taking it; One, I'd feel awful gouging someone like that. But more so: I can't replace it.

But yes, plinking with cheap stuff is the only way to go. The only time I stay away from the uber cheap crap is if the primers are corrosive (I don't always clean my guns thoroughly after shooting). Which is really only something to worry about with old Eastern-Bloc surplus. Blazer aluminum is where it's at!
See? Told ya!

I asked my local guy today while I was picking up some blanks to teach wife how to load, he has boxes of 20 max 5 per day 46.00 for 100 not bad in these times under 500 for 1k.

You can always go with snap caps. I picked up a pack of five from Amazon.
Amazon.com: A-Zoom 9Mm Luger Precision Snap Caps (5 Pack): Sports & Outdoors

You sure did.

I don't like snap caps for one reason. Complacency. I've seen one too many times someone thinking a snap cap is in the pipe when there was actually live ammo. I've had a negligent discharge and it sucks. On modern guns, you're really not hurting anything by dry firing.
I went as far as to contact Springfield about dry firing my XD. They recommended snap caps. But I dont dry fire if I can help it. The only thing they are really good for is learning how to load or clear a jam/misfire.

No problem dry firing most modern centerfires, like you said. But for PNC's wife learning how to load mags, snap caps could be useful, but not absolutely necessary.

The 12ga snap caps I have came in handy the most when I was having cycling problems in a pump.

The only thing that dry firing could theoretically hurt on the XD is the striker retainer pin. The pin on top of the slide. It's a .10C part.

Anyone here have an M&P Shield? My ex is looking to get a handgun, and that's one that I was thinking about recommending, due to it's size. She's got tiny hands. My first recommendation, being the Glock fan that I am, would be a G26, but she's already shot one of those, and the grip is still too "fat" for her little hands.

9mm here. I had a G26 years ago, but had to sell it. It cramped my hand up so damn bad. Funny that the Shield doesn't do that.
The Shield is a sweet little shooter with a sweet trigger out of the box. I've put over 3k rounds through it with not one issue. Love it.

Ah, yes. For loading mags, snap caps for sure. Part of what I LOVE about the FiveseveN is that it loads just like a rifle mag. Push straight down.

I'll own up and say that I use a MagLula for handguns. Amazon.com: Butler Creek 9mm-.45 Caliber LULA Universal Pistol Loader and Unloader: Sports & Outdoors

5 star w/ over 1,300 reviews is very telling.

I'm having issues with my Mossberg 930 SPX not cycling correctly. The loading gate is hanging up on something. Not my problem as it's under warranty.

Putting snap caps randomly into a live-loaded mag is another good use, to practice clearing malfunctions quickly while you're shooting.
