I've been kicking around the idea of getting a small semi auto to take with me when I jog. Suggestions? Smaller the better. Would like to not go below 380..but it wouldn't be the end of the world if I did.

S&W M&P Shield 9mm, Springfield XDS .45, Sig P938, S&W BG380, Ruger LCP, J-frame .357Mag.

I've been jogging with my XDS, daily carry a Glock 30 or XD sub compact 9mm

You're not a fan of anything below the 9mm range huh?

Not a bad looking semi at all. Light too at 19 oz

Not particularly. 9mm technology has come SO far in the last 3 years that it's pointless, imo, to use a lower caliber (.380) when the micro 9mms are not much, if any larger than 380 semis. Not to mention, 9mm is MUCH cheaper than .380. Plus the tissue destruction with a modern hollow point 9mm is just devastating!

Now, I'm not against .380, depending on the load. Not all JHP is equal. I prefer Winchester Ranger T 9mm +P+, Ranger T .45 +P and Federal HST +P. Stay away from Hornady. They've said it themselves that their penetration is shallow by design! That doesn't sit well with me.

I've tested all of the above rounds and Winchester Ranger and Federal HST are about the same performance.

Also, I HATE safeties. But the safety on the Shield is so out of the way and stiff enough that I leave it 'off' and have never had an issue with accidental engagement or negligent nor accidental discharge. Just wear a proper holster. For running, look in to a belly band. That's what I use when running. I use a Crossbreed, Tennessee Holster Co or N82tactical.com in waistbands.

A little more expensive, but look at the Sig P938, too. Very small, 9mm w/ a single action trigger with a safety. But it's set up like a 1911 and very ergonomic.

I was going to suggest a Springfield XDm .40 with the 3.5 (I think) inch barrel. I shot one last week and really liked it, but it was just too small for my hands. But other than that, its lightweight (polymer frame) and fairly accurate.

3.8" barrel on the compact XDm. It's just a bit too big for running, though. And 9mm is better. :p An XD sub compact may work.

I just bought Trijicon HD night sights, a trigger job (fulcrum- tactical) and an extended beavertail from my Glock 30. I'll post pics and thoughts once they get here. :D

I also bought 1,000 rounds of 9mm FMJ, 500 Winchester Ranger T 147g +P+ 9mm for carry, 1,000 rounds of .45 FMJ, 250 Winchester Ranger T 230g +P and 250 Federal HST JHP +P.

Really excited for my Glock parts. :D

Thanks for the advice. I see someone else has put a lot of thought into this as well lol

Thought, like what to carry when out for a run? Sure have. Everything I listed is an option during excersize. I daily carry a larger gun w/ higher mag capacity, of course. I'm VERY happy with all of my carry weapons.

I just hope USPS replaces my Springfield EMP 9mm. I'm a bit nervous though, because I didn't insure the contents of the package. :/ We'll see. James at www.xd-hs2000.com is really stepping up to the plate to try to fix it. I re-sent the EMP, frame and slide, to him in hopes he can fix it. If he can't he's going to help me with USPS. Really good dude.

Seriously, if you need a refinish or night sights, patronize James at XD-hs2000.com. He's very good people and goes above and beyond what his job entails.

Well, I got the EMP back together. Barrel lock up and slide fit seem extra tight due to the thin layer of 'paint', which should actually help with accuracy. It tood a little force to get the slide stop/disassembly pin all he way in, but it does fit. I'm excited to take it out and shoot it. Still not too thrilled about the paint job. Stock, they come with a black frame and a flat silver side. Mine is all black. I may just take it to the shop and bead blast it so it's all a dull silver. I think that'll look very clean.
