I should add that what I posted may seem like a long involved process; but it really isn't. I built one like this for a guy in a restaurant last week, and it didn't take more than 5 minutes.
Basically, what you are doing is fitting the wick to the coil, instead of wrapping the coil around a previously made wick. The oxidation on the wick is fragile, and every turn of the wire, when you're trying to wrap a coil around the wick is an opportunity for a hot spot.IMO
