On the flip side, there were quite a few smokers where my husband works that gave him a hard time when he started vaping. Called him a 'traitor' and that vaping wasn't smoking. Well, duh. Of course it's not. That's the whole point!

Funny thing is, now all those diehard smokers have been converted to the e-cig. Eight in total, with a few more getting curious about it. :D

I dunno about being called a traitor, but I have had smoking friends give me grief - using slurs that I won't repeat, but I think that is a part of me keeping my liq, spare attys, etc in a small leather pouch. (My purse, they call it). Though 2 of said friends have since started vaping and given up smoking once they realized it "worked".

I first encountered a guy vaping at our County Courthouse, while awaiting selection for jurors for a trial. I don't think I'd even ever heard of e-cigarettes. He was being rather stealth about it, while reading a book. I'd have to have been an idiot to have thought he was smoking. He was using one of those very similar to regular king sized length cigarettes e-cigs. People that mistake vaping for smoking, in my opinion, are not only uninformed. . .they're just plain stupid. I now use a ProVari w/MAP Tank & clear shorty DT. How anybody could possibly mistake this contraption for a cigarette is simply beyond me. JMHO

There is only one other smoker where I work, and she is getting curious about it.

The funniest part is, the person that suggested I try and e-cig, does not smoke, never did, does not vape either. But saw me trying to quit and heard about this and thought it might help.

She was right!

She is my manager so you can imagine I am getting a lot of support doing this, although I do treat it exactly like having a cigarette, I go outside with it. The last thing I want to do is give people a bad attitude about e-cigs, there is enough of that as it is.

Ive thought about buying some of those cheap disposable one and trying to convert my friends anyone have and experience with them (dont mean to siderail your post just reminded me and im trying to get 15 post for one of those shnazy quit smoking for so long signatures)

I had fairly good luck with 21st Century ecigs. I heard that these are often available in gas stations; I bought mine at a local cig outlet. I believe these are DSE 108s, but don't know for sure. I paid $7.99 for a disposable one with a carto.

Unfortunately, I'm able to post again to this thread and now with a big, fat YES to this question:

Has anyone else encountered this level of rabid close mindedness?

We spent the weekend with my MIL and her husband at their summer place and they both have a deep hatred for smoking. Apparently, they hate vaping and e-cigs just as much. Especially my FIL. Great googly moogly, he was on our case all weekend! "When are you going to quite THOSE things?" "You know everyone else thinks you're smoking." On and on and on.

DH and I have been so proud and excited about quitting smoking and vaping instead and then FIL had to be such a jackwagon about it. Gah. I got so irriated at one point that I went and lit up a real cig just for spite. Dang it.

ETA: We vaped outside and in smoking allowed areas only and STILL got grief. Geesh.

i haven't had anyone mess with me about vaping.. but i havent been doing long either... my dad did say it was a "pacifier" and i thought that was pretty funny though! =D i also feel the same way as some other people that have posted.. i just do it in "smoking areas" and not in stores, restaurants etc... why? well, i find that if i do it in a smoking area i am less likely to get a bad response.. and... that's where you find other smokers who can be given cards to go order ecigs and so on.:) AND i live in a small town and i don't want someone to call the cops thinking i am smoking "other substances" lol! we have a lot of cops with not a lot to do and i don't wanna get hassled by barney fife and andy.. ya feel me:)

oh and i want to add that in the short amount of time i have been vaping i have had more people think that i was "smoking the funny cigarettes" than any other response...i think it's hillarious....=D i have had 3 people in the last week that i had to take it apart and show them that there wasn't anything "funny " in there! they were nice about it ... i think that they were hoping it had something "funny' in it.. they actually looked disappointed that it was an ecig and not something more nefarious:)

My daughter's father-in-law is one of those "rabid" people - he has condescending glares down to a science (I swear they could bore a hole right through you) - and unfortunately I am around him quite a bit.

I just started my vaping journey last night - 2 slip ups very, very early this morning - have been fine since then. I've given quite a bit of thought as to how I'm going to handle him in particular the first time he sees me vaping (what appears to be a fat, black magic marker) and I believe I'm going to say something along the lines of:

"I am so glad that after all these years I've finally been able to quit smoking - simply by switching to a device that allows me to "simulate" smoking - when actually all I'm doing is inhaling coconut flavored water vapor! No more smoking!!!!! Yay!!! All of this new technology is awesome! Not only is my wallet thanking me, but my heart and lungs are too!" :)

Think he'll buy it?

I wan't really sure where to post this, but it seemed appropriate here.

I have had several occasions when vaping in public that people seemed interested in what I was doing and have asked questions. On more than one occasion though I have had people get downright snippy with me about vaping, and even the suggestion that they give it a try. One guy went so far as to tell me that I had no right to call myself a non-smoker.

Has anyone else encountered this level of rabid close mindedness?

Cheers,
VMS

I was gonna say "wow you are kidding" but then I thought about my recent run in with a past friend of mine who was rather cruel with me about my smoking past and I thought yeah...I'm not surprised lol! I think a lot of it has to do with that people who are like this are like this because the subject at hand (cigarette smoking) has affected them in some negative way at some point in their lives...whether it be directly or indirectly and that is how they cope...they attack!

Do they also think if you only smoked that green stuff that you would still be a smoker too? Let's not forget our friends the nicotine patch, gum and inhaler as well! Geez I hope I don't get a warning for this lol...

My grandmother was the only naysayer when I first started vaping. This was how our conversation went:

"Just what is the difference between those things and regular cigarettes?" she said nastily.

"I'm not smoking 4,000+ chemicals," I replied.

"Yes, but the nicotine is still going to kill you."

I let the conversation drop because there was no point in arguing with her. In contrast, the rest of my family has been very supportive of my decision to vape.

It amazes me how commonplace the thought is that nicotine is the cancer-causing substance in analogs, and therefore vaping is a worthless endeavor.

Luckily, I haven't run into anyone who is outwardly hostile toward my vaping. I'm sure people still have that negative connotation in the back of their heads, even after I explain everything to them. But as long as they leave me alone, I don't care too much. :p

I do like the correlation between nicotine and caffeine though. I'm gonna have to use that one.

i have gotten a horrible reaction! A man literally told me to leave the establishment and never come back. I tried to explain to him that it was not a cigaret, i wasn't harming anyone and that i would stop immediately. He heard none of that and continued to escort me out. Well needless to say, my college librarian hates me.

Oddly enough my college professors allowed me to vape during class, exams, and lectures.

My father in law was, and still is, a nay sayer. He quit 'cold turkey' (my mother in law told me he was on a prescription to help him stop, similar to how Chantix is supposed to work). So as I was telling my MIL about me switching over to e-cigs, he just glared at me and said that I should just quit like he did.

I can't afford to see a doctor to the a 'script. Chantix scares the beetlejuice out of me. And every time I've quit cold turkey, three days later my husband would buy me a pack and to stop being such a ....h. So, he still keeps pestering me to this day about when I'm going to 'really stop'.

Me, I'm happy vaping and slowing weaning myself off of the nicotine. Even if I never hit 0mg, I can't be doing any worse then when I was inhaling burning smoke fumes, right?

Last time I looked I was still living in the USA - not some Red country where they tell you what your going to do. Too many americans these days try to tell everyone what they should and should not do. If a person smokes, vapes, etc. it's no ones business but theirs. Things were much simpler in the 60's and 70's. One of these days they will tell us what to read and not to read too.

The pictures that give pleasure to your eyes
It's one for all, all for one
We work together, common sons
Never need to wonder how or why."
