specs: The 10ml bottle of Revolver RY4 sent to me for review by the hangdude (thanks, dude!) is all-PG, 24mg nic strength. The liquid is a very pale gold/yellow in color. Testing was done by atty-dripping into a bonut-modded 1.5 ohm Joye 306 powered by a Hello 016 battery providing 4.0 volts for 10.6 watts.

Revolver RY4 is a classic Chinese formulation. All the Chinese-manufactured RY4s are good tasting, superbly blended, well-performing juices, but the variance in flavor between all of them is minimal. Doesn’t seem to matter what vendor label is glued on, nor what tweaks in recipe/formula have been previously agreed between the vendor and the manufacturer. They are all much more similar than different. Revolver is no exception.

I cannot discern any significant difference in flavor between Revolver RY4, Bloog RY4, and Smokeless Image Volt RY4. Oh, there probably are slight differences, but if so, I can hardly taste them. All three liquids taste almost the same to me, like Dulcis sweetened with Cotton Candy (ethyl maltol) and extra vanilla, and the nuttiness reduced to just a hint rather than a definite flavor. The colors of the juices suggest that they are not identical---from the extremely pale gold of Revolver through the pale but darker gold of Dulcis to the more orange-tinted pale amber of Bloog/Volt. That diversity suggests different flavorings or nicotine bases, but the end result is still very similar.

It’s telling that Revolver lists their RY4 not in the category of tobacco juices, but in ‘Sweets and Treats’ instead. I agree with that decision. Revolver RY4 is definitely a dessert vape (as are both Bloog and Volt RY4s). If you like sweet Chinese RY4s, you’ll love this! If, on the other hand, you’re looking for something slightly unusual that pushes the envelope, or has stronger tobacco, or a more distinctive caramel or vanilla, forget it. You can skip Revolver, since it’s classic RY4 all the way, except sweeter. Every molecule in this liquid is secure in its lineage, which goes back to the first wave of Janty imitators.

My comments here are not meant as sarcasm. I’m not suggesting that Revolver RY4 is a brainless or generic liquid. No way. This is a very friendly, personable RY4, eager to please as a puppy, frisky and playful, and sweeter than hell. I find it impossible not to like this juice, although I’m not sure I’ll still respect myself in the morning.

I can’t give Revolver RY4 a Top 10 ranking because Dulcis and Bloog/Volt are already in the Top 10, and Revolver RY4 is too sweet to be in there with them. So I’ll put it in the second ten, but well down in that group.

One point very much in favor of Revolver RY4 over its siblings is price. At only $8.99 for a 30ml bottle from an American vendor, this juice is a terrific bargain.

Ranking on the Big List: #20
Category Groups: Dessert (sweeter), Vanilla Rich

Note: I have a bunch of RY4s to review over the next week, so I’ll postpone updating the Big List until those reviews are all posted.

specs: this juice is relatively fresh, having been made by the hangdude (thanks, dude!) just before sending to me; it might benefit from steeping, but I’m going to plunge ahead anyway; 18mg nic strength, in a 65PG/35VG blend; color of the liquid is a medium amber transparency. Testing was done by atty-dripping into a bonut-modded 1.5 ohm Joye 306 powered by a Hello 016 battery providing 4.0 volts for 10.6 watts.

This is the first DIY version of an RY4 ever to be reviewed by myself or anyone else on the Big RY4 Roundup thread. As a result, we have no rules or protocol or any other guidelines. I intend to review it just as I would any other RY4. This juice isn’t commercially available, but if you PM the hangdude, perhaps he’d make up a bottle and mail it to you (presumably, for a mutually-agreed price).

The nose of Dude RY4 is just like the taste: I get the three essential RY4 flavors---tobacco, caramel, and vanilla, plus one other strong flavor I couldn’t initially place. That turned out to be hazelnut, and it’s a major component of the flavor profile.

Performance is fine, flavor is ample and quite rich, and vapor production is easily sufficient.

On inhale, the first note I get is a bright tobacco along with the first burst of hazelnut. Later in the inhale, the caramel appears, with vanilla being more apparent on the exhale, and the hazelnut reappearing at the finish. Is this a bonfide RY4? You bet, but it’s custom variant rather than classic RY4. Is it good? Yes. The tobacco is a bit leafier than I usually expect, but the caramel is a very nice, medium flavor, and the vanilla is subtle. The juice has only a bit of sweetness to it, nowhere near a dessert vape RY4, and is actually one of the least sweet RY4s I've ever tried. It’s rich, but not sweet.

In the overall flavor profile, tobacco won't ever get lost in the mix, but I still wouldn’t categorize it as Stronger Tobacco. The flavors are distinct rather than blended; each flavor can be easily distinguished and tasted as separate. That might change with sufficient steeping time.

The only thing I couldn’t fully embrace about the juice was the domination of the hazelnut, which I consider both the “secret ingredient” and showcase flavor. In fact, I would lobby for a name change to Dude Hazelnut RY4. I don’t know which flavoring company’s hazelnut concentrate hangdude is using, but to my palate it’s as unusual as the hazelnut in Frisco, VaporStation's distinctive take on 555---not the same flavor as the hazelnut in Frisco, but similarly unique. Imagine Rou’s Natural Toasted Hazelnut Tobacco from VapeRite mixed 1:1 with Frisco, and you’re in the ballpark of Dude RY4. Personally, I’d prefer a nut flavor closer to the center of the nut spectrum, or maybe a mixed nut flavor. If you’re a hazelnut lover, however, the hangdude’s diy RY4 might be perfect for you.

Big List Ranking: #35
Category Groups: Nutty, Distinctive (atypical)

More reviews coming, so I'll wait to update the Big List.

Being a fan of both SI/Bloog RY4 and VS Frisco, if I was to mix the two together would it be an approximation of this Dude (hazelnut) RY4? This sounds like something I might like to try.

I can't say for sure if it would or not (so many ideas that are great in concept don't pan out in reality). Your thought process, however, seems totally reasonable to me.

Another possibility would be to take your SI/Bloog RY4 and just add some hazelnut flavoring concentrate to it. I have two hazelnut flavorings (from Perfumer's Apprentice and Health Cabin) and hazelnut praline (from Perfumer's). I don't know how close a match any of those might be to the very rich hazelnut in hangdude's diy RY4, but you get the idea.

specs: The 4ml sample bottle of NHaler R Why Not that the hangdude sent me for review (thanks, dude!) is 10mg nic strength in a PG/VG base blend of an unspecified ratio. The liquid is a very pale gold, almost colorless. Testing was done by atty-dripping into a bonut-modded 1.5 ohm Joye 306 powered by a Hello 016 battery providing 4.1 volts (but only 3.7 loaded volts) for 9.1 watts.

R Why Not is an RY4-variant from NHaler's High Voltage Octane line of 100% USA-made juices. NHaler has two other lines of juices, called High Voltage and Nhale/Exhale. Those lines offer a juice named RY4. Why this juice has a different name and how it differs (or not) from the two RY4s are unknown to me. High Voltage Octane is apparently NHaler’s “standard” line of juices in a low-nic formulation.

When I first atty-dripped some R Why Not, I was a bit disappointed. Flavor was ample, but where was the throat hit? I looked at the bottle. Aha, only 10mg! I vape 18-24mg juices, so 10mg feels very different, as if something were missing (and it is---throat hit). So, I did what is probably sacrilege for a juice reviewer. I altered the juice by adding just enough 60mg/ml liquid nicotine to the juice (14 drops or .7ml) to bring the nic strength up to 18mg. The flavor of the original juice seemed rich and deep enough to handle the slight dilution, and the flavor of the resulting “custom mix” (or “.......ized juice,” depending on your slant) was a bit more subtle than the original. The restoration of my normal amount of throat hit, however, pleased me immensely and (to me at least) improved the flavor significantly.

So, having committed a crime against nature and NHaler by altering their juice, I can report that it’s a delicious RY4, and I like it very much. If it’s possible for an RY4 to be both caramel-rich yet well-balanced, R Why Not is it. It’s definitely caramel-rich, but in this case that means that caramel leads the flavor profile rather than dominating it. The other flavors follow: the tobacco element is unobtrusive but very clean, and the vanilla more of an overtone than a definite flavor. Even with the uneven ratios of flavoring ingredients, however, R Why Not tastes very balanced, as if the flavor elements are indeed in “proper” proportion for this particular juice. My altering the juice may have helped in this regard, for it was primarily the caramel that cut back a shade or two from the added nic. The original juice was a tad less even, although still a well-blended formulation. Go figure.

The only downside to this juice is the price tag. Mine was free, of course, but yours won’t be, and $5 for a 6ml sampler or $20 for a 30ml bottle (with additional shipping charges) leans toward the high side. But so does everything else NHaler sells---Drew is not what I would call a “bargain” vendor. But then, what Drew charges is his business, not mine, except as a customer in my choice of whether to buy.

Despite my "thrifty consumer" objection, however, R Why Not is a winner.

Great review of the R why Not, was waiting for this one. Is one of my favorite RY4 variant. I agree about the price, thats wy I always order it in the three bottles combo that brings down the price around $14 plus use the discount code to lower a little more the price.

Drew always state that the High Voltage and Octane lines are for HV vaping thats why their lower nic levels. His HV RY4 is another favorite of mine.

I'm still really new to vaping and am trying to get a grip on things. I've mostly liked the tobacco flavors and want to check out RY4. I have 2 questions, the first being about Halo Tribeca and how strong this juices flavor comes across? I'm not getting too much out of it, I might need to give it some time to steep or maybe I need to develop my pallet. I personally found Torque 56 to be unpleasant and overwhelming if that gives anyone an idea of where I'm sitting. My second question is where I should start with finding a decent RY4 to check out, maybe in a sampler but by itself would be fine. I'm not normally a huge fan of super sweet juices. My current favorites are Smooth 8 and Prime 15 from halo, and Wowboy Nobacco from V4L.

Really love all the information here, it's a lot to take in but has be excited about all these different types of RY4.

Hello again all at ECF, it's been some time since I last visited, I hope you guys and gals are all well. I see bill contuines to do an exemplary job of reviewing RY4 here and long may he contuine to do so.

The simple truth around my long absence was merely a lack of new RY4 or liquids to test or really review. In truth I'd amassed such a huge backlog of juices to finish and try I had to get through my stockpile a little before really justifying a new load. Even new hardware didn't tempt me, my mini reo has been so perfect i felt no reason to replace it (even a vv lavatube mod i purchased and used maybe 3 times couldnt part me!).

So some months have passed and I've since tried three new juices which I'll have a full look into this week, all from Janty and part of their new Vitaya range. RY4, RY4-X and an RY7 will all go through the rigirous testing required to see if they a: deserve the name RY4 and b: if they can live upto their long standing No:1 top hit brother, namely: Janty RY4.

It's good to be back, happy vaping all.

specs: The 20ml bottle of DIYFlavorShack RY4 that the hangdude sent me for review (thanks, dude!) is 16mg nic strength in a 50/50 PG/VG base blend. The liquid is a light amber color. Testing was done by atty-dripping into a bonut-modded 1.5 ohm Joye 306 powered by a Hello 016 battery providing 3.7 loaded volts for 9.1 watts.

One of the qualities typical of Chinese-manufactured RY4s is a certain brightness---sometimes I refer to that quality as sparkly or efferverscent, although it’s not really. Anyway, I don’t know what the Chinese do to achieve that brightness in their RY4s, but it tends to be absent in most of the custom-USA-made RY4s I’ve tried. They are, well, smoother or “darker” or more emphatic on the mid and bass notes/lower end of the flavor scale. Less treble and brightness, and often almost none. More steak and less sizzle.

That’s the case with this USA-made RY4, which is custom-made by Dawn at DIYFlavorShack. It’s a very calm, steady RY4, comfortable in itself and comforting to the vaper. Though I wouldn’t call it a “classic” RY4 (that terms tends to invoke Chinese RY4s with their brightness and blending of flavors), it is more traditional than some of the RY4s I’ve reviewed recently. Just the basic flavor ingredients without any unusual flavorings or pushing the envelope into RY4-variant territory. The flavor profile is softer and less challenging than many other USA-made RY4s.

What I’m describing above is neither good nor bad in any inherent way. It’s good if you want a comfortable, relatively conservative RY4, and if the juice is well-made, using high-quality flavoring ingredients in ratios that complement well. It’s bad if you like a more extreme RY4, or if the juice just not very well-made, where either the individual elements are not wonderful, or the sum of the ingredients ends up less-than-wonderful.

This is the first juice I’ve had from DIYFlavorShack, but I know from reading ECF that Dawn is held in high regard for her flavorings and mixing skills. Her RY4 gives me no reason to think otherwise.

That said, I don’t find this to be a superlative RY4 because it plays safe, perhaps too safe, and thus ends up being a bit too mundane or pedestrian to be award-winning. In other words, it’s good without being special or distinguished. Nothing about DIYFlavorShack RY4 is off-putting, but nothing particularly shines, either. As a result, it settles into the middle of the pack.

specs: The 20ml bottle DIYFlavorShack Caramel-Vanilla RY4 that the hangdude sent me for review (thanks, dude!) is 16mg nic strength in a 50/50 PG/VG base blend. The liquid is dark reddish-brown color, almost opaque, with just a little transparency remaining. Testing was done by atty-dripping into a bonut-modded 1.5 ohm Joye 306 powered by a Hello 016 battery providing 3.7 loaded volts for 9.1 watts.

DIYFlavorshack Caramel-Vanilla RY4 is the souped-up, hot-rod version of Dawn’s regular RY4 that I reviewed above. If these were vintage cars, regular RY4 would be a six-cylinder Chevy with a carburetor---dependable, efficient transportation. Caramel-Vanilla RY4 would still be a Dodge Charger, an eight-cylinder big-bore engine with fuel injection and a turbo-charger. Not a nimble sports car by any means, but what used to be called a “muscle car.”

This is RY4 on flavor steroids. The American-made signature is still there, meaning very little brightness, but the flavors carry a more whomp. A lot more. My first reaction to DIYFlavorShack’s regular RY4 was, “Nice juice, very pleasing.” My first reaction to Caramel-Vanilla RY4 was, “Whoa, Nelly! This is intense!” It’s like regular RY4 with quadruple flavor. Amazingly enough, you can order this liquid with EXTRA flavor (although I can’t imagine why anyone would want to, unless it’s for doubling by adding more base liquid). The extra flavoring option comes in a separate bottle, for the user to mix in as he/she dares.

Caramel-Vanilla RY4 is definitely for vapers who require “in-your-face” flavors. It’s not for the faint-hearted, nor those who appreciate subtlety. It’s clearly a force to be reckoned with. Somewhat curiously, the juice is not sweet at all, and not rich either, just way more intense than the flavor impact of Dawn’s regular RY4.

Dawn's "hot rod" C-V RY4 reminds me of one of my own diy RY4s (I have a bunch). The one in question is my “kitchen sink” blend, where I add the dregs of anything vaguely RY4-like that I don’t want to vape on its own---caramels, vanillas, tobaccos, whatever. The difference is that Dawn’s souped-up RY4 is actually pretty tasty, whereas mine sucks. Colors of the juices are about the same, though. Very dark.

This may seem like a fairly critical review, but it’s not. Dawn’s Caramel-Vanilla RY4 is likely to please many, many people. I might even be among them. I just don’t know where to rank this juice. To be safe, I’m putting both of Dawn’s RY4s together, with her regular RY4 at #30, and her super-charged Caramel-Vanilla version right below it.

Two criteria are used for these rankings. The first is my own totally subjective personal opinion, meaning what I like and don’t like. That constitutes about 80% of the ranking. The other 20% comes from my assessment of the general popularity of a given RY4. If it’s wildly popular, that will improve somewhat whatever ranking I’d otherwise give it based on my personal reaction.

Each RY4 on the Ranking List is now followed by a numbered post, which is the original review of that juice. So, if you want to read my initial opinions about any RY4 on the list, now you don’t have to wade through 100 pages to find the review.

If you might base a buying decision on this post, look to the Category Groups rather than the Rankings, since the Categories are a more objective (meaning less opinionated) and reliable guide to RY4s you might like.

An asterisk (*) after the name means that the juice is not commercially available.

The dramatic re-shuffling of the Rankings on the Big List continues as we start off 2012 with a bang. Shows what an unpredictable despot I can be! Many juices made a move up or down this time, sometimes incrementally, other times in a big leap or fall. I moved BackwoodsBrew RY4 way back up to #13, simply because it’s overwhelming popularity (and scarcity) continues undiminished. Also Want2Vape Rock Star made a leap from the bottom to the top of the 40s. Some Chinese juices shifted, too, with GreenhouseOne RY4 and Good Prophets GP4 making major moves up while Keemer RY3 took a big tumble down.

QuickNic RY4 has been falling in the rankings for a long time, pushed down incrementally by one after another newer RY4 that got a higher ranking. I moved QuickNic RY4 up by 11 spots to #20 because it deserves better treatment from me than it had been getting. Heck, I’d move it higher if I could, but all the juices in the teens are so strong that they won’t budge.

In the Top 10, Alien Visions Raf-a-licious clawed its way to #2, switching positions with IKV Gold RY4, now at #4. Over the past month, five new juices took over positions in the Top 10. Just when I think I’ve vaped all the truly great RY4s, new ones parachute in from out of the blue…

RY4 Rankings (includes RY4-variants)

#51-60.....Only So-So, but still acceptable in a pinch
#61-68.…Passable, but only on a desert island with no other juices
#69……...Bottom of the barrel: RY4 hell

Thank you bill, for doing such fine reviews. You have a way of writing what you feel, something I could never do. Therefore you give us a coherent description of the many RY4s out there.

Also thank you for bumping up my favorite RY4 up to 20th. I know we all have our favorite flavors, and we root for them even though we have no stake in their rankings. Those who love Halo's Tribecca have probably stopped reading this thread, figuring you just don't know good juice when you taste it. And although I don't agree with you often (Joogler, KickBass, TopShelf), I do enjoy your descriptive reviews.

It was nice of you to grade and review my version of RY4. I feel you should take it off the list next time you do rankings. If you don't, I am afraid you will have to rank every version of everybody's RY4. I feel proud that it ranked that high in a field this tough. But leaving it on the list doesn't serve any purpose but my pride.

Thanks Bill, Have you ever tried Flavourart RY4, not the Oriental version?

Jimi,

Not yet.

I admit to a fairly pronounced prejudice against FA tobaccos, but if FlavourArt's RY4 ever shows up in my mailbox, I'll try it, review it, and do my best to give it a fair shake.

hang,

I'll comply with your wishes. I do think you've made a juice that you can be justifiably proud of. (I'm glad you gave me the hint about hazelnut, because I didn't get it the first time around).

As for disagreeing with me, well, yeah. I figure the only person on ECF who might agree with me about the rankings would be me, but even I disagree with myself---often. And repeatedly. Ad nauseum. As I shared with you and will now make public, I've felt for some time that the Rankings List has become a Frankenstein monster (Damn! I told Igor to steal the jar with the brilliant brain, not the jar with the damaged, criminal brain...), or maybe it's more like the Miss America Pageant with only one judge. Either way, it's becoming monstrous and unworkable, so I fully intend to kill it when we reach 100 RY4s. Or some other dictatorial megalomaniac can take over doing the Rankings, but it won't be me. I plan to retire from the sheer folly and downright silliness of rankings, although I may continue to do the occasional review. And---just so my false humility isn't too painfully obvious--I do think the Category Groups are worth keeping as a Consumer Guide to RY4.

If we get to 100 RY4s, and I hold the gun to the Ranking List's head, before I pull the trigger, perhaps we could have a poll and let folks vote for their favorite RY4 to come up with a "final" Ranking.

No, wait! I have a better idea. We'll have an Irish Wake, and I'll sell off the 1500ml of RY4s I've accumulated since the thread began. Cheap. Yeah, that's the ticket. We'll call it "The Really Big RY4 Garage Sale." LOL.
