Here & There
Bill I am glad you have seen the light  ...LOL I love GJ4 and just got a big order of it in the mail today. Its just totally my favorite tobacco juice to date.

Thank you for your careful evaluations and reevaluations- they help us all. You must be a Virgo....

We also like the Vita Bella too.

Here are the stats: This is a medium-caramel colored liquid (as best as I can tell, since the 3ml bottle I was sent is opaque white), in a not-thick 50/50 PG/VG blend, 18mg nic strength.

Thanks to ECF member Flying W for sending me a 3ml sample bottle of HotVapes RY4. It’s his favorite RY4, and he wanted to see how it stacks up against the competition. Boy, do I feel bad now.

I’m not inclined to quote other reviewers, but---to bolster my defense---let me offer a couple of excerpts from Dr. Vapenstein’s review of HotVapes RY4 from a year ago: “…it's just not very exciting. There is no robustness or depth, nothing really to make me want to come back after our time in The Lab together… This juice's crime is that it just didn't do anything to distinguish itself. It's another generic RY4 in a world full of generic RY4s.”

I don’t always agree with the good Dr. V., but I’m afraid I share his opinion here. There’s nothing off-putting about HotVapes RY4. Unfortunately, there’s nothing particularly outstanding about it, either. It’s not bad, which is good, but it’s not especially good, which is bad. We’ve all known people who are like this juice---nice enough, sort of middle of the road, inoffensive, but forgettable. Not someone about whom we could have (or imagine having) strong feelings one way or the other. Nothing to hate, but not much to love.

Hotvapes states on their web site that they have “a variety of crazy good homemade flavors,” and that pedigree shows---Hotvapes RY4 does not taste much like any Chinese RY4 I’ve had, which is a shame in this case, since Chinese RY4s are generally very good. “Homemade” feels accurate to me; I could diy this juice myself with the listed ingredients: tobacco, English Toffee, and marshmallow.

Honestly, I can’t recognize anything remotely like English toffee or marshmallow in this juice. What I do taste is generic: nondescript tobacco, artificial caramel, and vanilla that is, well, “vanilla,” if you get my meaning. To me, HotVapes RY4 is reminiscent of the old red-and-white cans of Campbell’s soup from the 1950s, where the vegetables are uniformly soft, with all the life cooked out of them.

Ranking: #55
Category Groups: So-So (undistinguished)

link: HotVapes RY4

[Note to Flying W: Since taste is subjective, and you love HotVapes RY4, you may certainly ignore Dr. V. and me and tell us to go soak our heads. On the other hand, you might want to try Toasted Toffee Kick Juice, by ESCI (link: Toasted Toffee ordering page). The recipe is similar to HotVapes RY4, but---in my opinion---it’s a much better-tasting juice.]

Two criteria are used for these rankings. The first is my own totally subjective personal opinion, meaning what I like and don’t like. That constitutes about 80% of the ranking. The other 20% comes from my assessment of the general popularity of a given RY4. If it’s wildly popular, that will improve somewhat whatever ranking I’d otherwise give it based on my personal reaction.

Each RY4 on the Ranking List is now followed by a numbered post, which is the original review of that juice. So, if you want to read my initial opinions about any RY4 on the list, now you don’t have to wade through 100+ pages to find the review.

If you might base a buying decision on this post, look to the Category Groups rather than the Rankings, since the Categories are a more objective (meaning less opinionated) and reliable guide to RY4s you might like.

RY4 Rankings (includes RY4-variants)

#1-10…...Superlative, Nectar of the Gods
#11-20.…Very Good, like fine wine
#21-30….Good, well worth vaping
#31-40….Close enough for horseshoes
#41-50.....Only So-So, but still acceptable in a pinch
#51-62.…Passable on a desert island with no other juices
#62….….So weird it makes my skin crawl

"Thats is the reason I sent the HVRY4 in the first place. I knew you could pick it apart and and give it an identity. Now that we know where it stands . I can save a little time and money trying the other RY4's that may be a whole lot better . I still appreciate you for being honest about this juice. I respect your opinion and I know that theres some other RY out there that I should be trying.

I think I'm going to try some mom and pops ry4 next. My ry4 is so low on the list that at least I have a lot of juice to try that may be better than what I thought was good.

Flying W,

As wigglr wrote above, if you like HotVapes RY4, no one else's opinion counts one whit. That's always true in vaping---the only person we have to please is ourselves. You don't have my nose, tastebuds, and brain. And I don't have yours.

That said, if you decide to try another RY4, Mom&Pop's is a great choice (in either of their two versions---RY4 or RY4v2).

I was re-organizing my juice and flavoring cabinets the other day and came upon my two big bottles of FSUSA RY5, which has been relegated to my juice graveyard for more than nine months. I don’t know what sparked me to do so, but I started vaping it, so I thought I might as well write a short review.

specs: FSUSA RY5 (at least the year-old version I have of it) is a very dark brown liquid at 24mg nic strength using a base ratio of 50/50 PG/VG, although it’s not particularly thick. I atty-dripped it using a 1.5 ohm Joye 306 and loaded it into an X7 Micromizer carto, both powered by a Hello 016 battery providing 4.1 volts.

FreedomSmokeUSA is primarily known as a juice vendor, although they also sell hardware and other vaping supplies. They were one of the first vendors I purchased juice from after I began vaping. FSUSA offers a huge number of juices; their Specialty Line of Custom Pre-Mix alone numbers 225 flavors. Because their selection is so large and their juices relatively inexpensive (including 3ml samples for $2.25), FSUSA is a favorite among newer vapers. They also have frequent big bottle sales.

I have 56 different FSUSA juices---37 of those are 3ml bottles either bought as samplers or included free with orders---none of which I vape anymore, because I quickly moved on to higher-end artisan juice-makers. In my first months of vaping, however, FSUSA was my go-to vendor. Their RY4, RY5, Wyatt Earp, and Cocoa Chaos were among my favorite juices back then. I still have numerous 30ml and 50ml bottles of all four of those juices, with enough left of each to keep someone in juice for a year (or, in my case, a lifetime).

FSUSA RY4 especially commands a large following of loyal vapers, although its “kitchen sink” approach of many ingredients puts it right at the edge of proper RY4s. It was my favorite RY4 early on, but no longer, and my low ranking for it on the Big List (currently #56 out of 63) shows how far it has fallen in my eyes (er, taste buds).

FSUSA RY5 is even further out than their RY4, far enough to cross the boundary from RY4 Land into Somewhere Else. There’s a term in quantum mechanics (physics) called The Absolute Elsewhere, and I jokingly consider RY5 from that realm, because it sure as heck isn’t from around here.

What does it taste like? Imagine a classic RY4. Then imagine five other flavors added to that RY4, but in amounts and mixes that make those extra flavors impossible to identify, and which make the juice into a stewy mélange. That’s FSUSA RY4. Then imagine adding ten more flavors to that, and you have FSUSA RY5.

Back in the period when I vaped it every day---and a lot of it---I strove to figure out RY5s component flavors, but to no avail. As I vape it again today after a hiatus of nine months, I still can’t identify its component or even main flavors. The description I settled on back a year ago will suffice again now. I called it “chocolate prune.” Yum. LOL.

Lord knows RY5 is a substantial juice, very meat and potatoes. It is composed entirely of bass notes---no high-end sparkle at all. Just deep, dark flavor, and tons of it, with a certain muddiness from the sheer overwhelm of different flavors. It’s rather like one of those All-You-Can-Eat-For-Dirt-Cheap chain restaurants that are so popular in America. Not gourmet food by any stretch of the imagination, and not the finest ingredients or best nutrition either, but at least you won’t leave the table hungry.

Is RY5 a bad juice? Not at all. In fact, it has a certain cachet of mystery that is strangely attractive, much like Boba’s Bounty, in that its flavor and ingredients can’t be easily defined (not that I consider RY5 to be on Boba’s level of craftsmanship---not even close).

Given that FSUSA RY5 seems to be an “everything-but-the-kitchen-sink” kind of juice, it doesn’t hurt it to add more ingredients to the stew, so it lends itself well to mixing with other juices. Yesterday I added some of my own DIY Caramel Absolute juice to RY5, and it produced something that was, well, interesting, and certainly vapeable. Alone or blended, FSUSA RY5 remains its own creature, and while not a game-changing great juice, RY5 is certainly a hard-working journeyman trooper.

Because it is so far beyond RY4 (and doesn’t taste anything like an RY-liquid), I won’t rank RY5, nor include it on the Big List. But it is out there, and lots of people love it, so I give RY5 a kind of grudging respect.

Hey guys, I know there a ton of great websites here but I just cannot make up my mind! What would be the best RY4 to go with for somebody who hasn't ever tried this flavor before, one that would closely resemble all the hype surrounding the famous pedigree of RY4? I see a lot of talk about the Dekang version but I only have seen it in 50ml. I'm only about 2 weeks into vaping and my first order of a chinese 50ml bottle was a bad experience for me. My funds are tight so my goal is to find a good RY4 without having to go broke, lol. Any ideas of a place I could get a few different versions of the RY4 to try out without having to go to multiple places? I've found a bunch of tobacco samplers but nothing with an RY4 variety.

The IkanVape RY4 Gold PG is similar to the Dekang version but much better IMHO. You can purchase it in a 20ml bottle.
