Bill your list is great!!! thanks for all your reviews and time, money you have given to share with us all....

passerbyeus,

My word, funny how things unfold with unexpected twists and turns, eh? If you hadn't persisted in questioning Toasted Toffee, I wouldn't have decided to remove it from the list, which led to my ditching the numerical rankings, which has in turn produced this little group hug of warm fuzzies for me and confirmation about the thread being worthwhile to folks. LOL.

Just goes to show that sometimes it's good to be stubborn, and sometimes it's good to give in.

On to more reviews!

I'm going to chime in with a little praise, too, Bill. Although I don't like a lot of the same RY4's that you like, I really enjoy your well-written descriptions. It's a pleasure to read. Thanks for doing this.
Sandy

Thanks, Sandy.

I'd be shocked if anyone agreed with my taste preferences all the time (or even half the time). LOL. Vaping is my most recent hobby/obsession (yours, too, I imagine, given your post count), so I enjoy the opportunity to use one of my main skills (writing) in a way that's primarily entertaining. Less serious, and more for fun.

It would be dissapointing if WE didn't make it to the hundred "mark"...

Please Bill... Keep on with the ranking until then. This way, we could celebrate once we get there, and have things simplified for "the record", since reaching the 'one hundred' mark sounds much more "epic" than simply interrupting "violently" right now.

PS: At least wait a few more days/ reviews, until my friend's blends are there, so we can have this "historical" moment...

=)

Remember Bill... It's the rock-and-roll that counts... !!! Rock and Roll is what this is all about. Rock and Roll, Bill...

Rock and Roll.

lostknitter,

Thanks! When I started the Big RY4 Roundup thread, I assumed it would be a one-shot post that would get buried in the archives very quickly. Probably just as well that I didn't know what it would become, given the time spent and effort expended. I'm pleased that it's evolved into a worthwhile resource for many on ECF.

My "real" job (how I pay the rent) involves writing about the serious and daunting crises now bearing down on humanity that are almost certain to change civilization dramatically in the years ahead. This thread balances out that seriousness---it's my "fun" job. LOL.

I like reading your descriptions of the RY's - keep it up.

On another note re: your job - It's my firm belief and opinion that this is the only thing humanity has to look forward to as they will bring it on themselves. - Not trying to be funny here either.

This is the second review of diy RY4s sent to me from ECF members. The first was diy Hazelnut RY4 from thehangdude. This trio is from far south of the border, all the way from Argentina. Keep ’em coming!

specs: ECF member revolver mailed me three 12ml bottles of DIY RY juices made by a friend of his (thanks, revolver!). They came all the way from Buenos Aires in Argentina and are tape-labeled RYP, RYV, and RY13. No other information was on the bottles, so I don’t know the nic strength or the base liquids/ratios. All I can share is the color of the liquids: medium-amber for RYP, darker amber for RYV, and medium gold for RY13. All three are transparent liquids, as we would expect. Testing comparisons were done by dripping into three bonut-modified Joye LR306 1.5 ohm atties powered by three Madvapes VV Boxes running at 4.2V under load for a rather high power output of about 11 watts. I also tried vaping the juices at 3.7V (9 watts) to see if any differences in flavor would emerge, but I didn’t notice any, except that 4.2V was a bit warmer and a lot more satisfying.

The first thing to be said about these RYs is that they weren’t concocted by some novice DIYer just playing with flavorings. All three carry the clear and obvious signature of having been made by a person who has experience in making juices. The three juices are, however, quite different among themselves, meaning distinct in their flavor profiles. These aren't just slight variations on a theme---each one is boldly different from the other two.

Are these RY4s? I don’t know the ingredients, but for any vaper to know the exact ingredients of a juice made by anyone else, especially in the commercial marketplace, is so rare as to be almost miraculous. Even if I knew the component flavorings, that would not in itself answer the question, since a specific and fixed list of RY4 flavorings is not cast in stone tablets handed down from on high. Sure, the "guideline" flavorings for RY4 are tobacco and caramel, and probably vanilla, with optional nuts and sweeteners---straight ethyl maltol, cotton candy, or marshmallow. That's what we established right from the beginning of the thread.

But the dramatic rise of custom RY4s that push the envelope of the more classic flavor profile and ingredients used by the original Janty and subsequent Dekang RY4s indicates a willingness among artisan juicemakers to toss out the guidelines of specific flavoring components in favor of more experimentation and broader variation. To cite one recent example, Highbrowbacco RY4 uses a custom flavoring homemade from chocolate liqueur. Back when I started this thread in June 2011, I felt more certain that I knew what an RY4 was than I do today. More and more, I find that any certainty about how RY4s should taste is quickly dissolving.

None of these three DIY juices uses the classic flavor profile of RY4. These are all custom RYs, not classics. They don’t at all resemble Janty's original or the subsequent generations of largely Chinese juices that I think of as classic RY4s.

The one that tastes most like an RY4 to me (and my favorite among this trio) is RY13. It’s pretty good. While RY13 won’t make it into my personal Top 10 RY4s, I would vape it happily if I were marooned on a desert island with no other juices (and an endless supply of batteries). The other two---RYP and RYV---taste to me much more like experiments, and not entirely successful ones. I would personally send these two back to the lab for further tweaking. Or maybe just start over, since tweaking juices that miss the mark is so often a losing proposition. Still, one winner out of three ain’t bad, especially since almost everyone’s DIY graveyard is littered with failures. For that matter, if truth be told, the batting average among commercial juices isn’t all that great, either.

Because these juices are not for sale, I won’t include them in the Category Groups. I don't think I could figure out their flavor profiles anyway. But that's OK. The purpose of the Category Groups is to help people pick out an RY4 they might want to buy. I will, however, include these DIY RYs in the “Not Available” subsection of the Big List.

If anyone would like to sample these three DIY RYs from Argentina, please PM me with your name and address, and I’ll mail you 3ml sample bottles (which I will provide) of each. You pay only for shipping ($2.00).

Note to revolver: Had I been ranking these as before, RY13 would have been ranked in the 30s, but RYP and RYV would be mired down in the 60s, since I honestly didn't much like either of them. Thanks for sending them to me! Your friend has an interesting palate, to say the least.

Bill,

Thank you for continuing this thread. The "one post wonder" that you thought would get buried has outlived most others! I so enjoy this but have one problem. I can NOT read any of it without grabbing a bottle or 3 of some RY4s. Ahh, life's tough, eh? ;)

I think fruit-as-food is terrific! Can't think of a single fruit I don't like in the realm of actual eating. Some fruits are a bit of a PITA to deal with (I'm thinking pomegranates and certain exotic fruits), but generally speaking I love fruit. Just not much in vaping.

I feel much the same way about chocolate. Great to eat, not so hot in eliquids, primarily because it's a tough flavor to get right.

For me as well. I'm actually sensing jealousy inside when I read of other people completely enjoying fruit vapes and the illusive chocolate vapes. No no no no NO thank you. Haven't met a fruit or chocolate vape I wanted to befriend.

I am sure that same question could be raised about 555. Why is there no Really Big 555 Roundup? Any volunteers?

If I could write like Bill, and review like Bill, oh hellsbells, if I could just be Bill for a day...

I recently tasted BWB's 555 Exotic. I have no clue about it, or about 555s for that matter, but I do know that as a constant flavor changer, this one got to me. I've been vaping it primarily (that's my word for ADV) for a couple of weeks. It has such an addictive quality to it taste-wise, but as I said, I am clueless. What IS it? Besides yummy.

Onwards with RY4s, please, and thanks so much, Bill!

Katdarling,

I've had a longstanding on-again off-again love affair with BWB that dates back to my first month of vaping. Luckily, I still have a stock of Café Mocha and the old Maxboro (now called Bacco, I think)---along with 16 other bottles of Don's brews---but I may need to pop for some 555 Exotic. I've read good things about it, and your description seals the deal. I'll try to restrain myself and wait for the Valentine's Day sales...

Oh no! Just read the customer reviews for 555 Exotic on the BWB site. While all five reviewers loved the nutty 555 flavor, two complained of no throat hit. That might be a deal breaker. I have most of a 30ml bottle of Don's regular 555 that's had a year to ripen, maybe I'll just stick with that.

If we all send you bottles of 555, will you start "The Really Big 555 Roundup (long)"? You wouldn't have to buy any. Just review them all for us. I'm sure there are fewer 555s than there are RY4s. Maybe only 65 or so...

hang,

I've got 555 juices by nine different vendors in my stash, plus two 555 flavoring concentrates. The only problem is that I don't like 555 nearly as much as I like RY4. I've never had a 555 make it into my daily vapes, whereas I have had numerous RY4s along the way in my daily vapes (although not anymore---all these reviews have killed RY4s for me purely for pleasure).

Frankly, I fear that I wouldn't be very good at reviewing 555s, for the somewhat embarrassing reason that I simply don't care enough about that flavor. This is a bit paradoxical, since I love tobacco vapes and nutty vapes. Just something about the flavor combo in typical 555s that leaves me sort of meh.

It's a good idea, though. Love the name---"The Really Big 555 Roundup (long)."

Read that and thought you had a stash that included over five hundred bottles of 555 lol

Me too! :) How many mls in juice do you have, Bill?

TH? It's got TH, Bill. When I get my Valentine's Day gift from my Valentine, which will be money for Don's Valentine's Day sale, I will buy enough to send some your way.

Oh shoot. Just recalled that I don't have a Valentine, ergo no incoming bucks, and a possible non purchase order for BWB on Feb. 14. Grrrr.

Kat,

I'm not sure whether to feel happy or horrified to admit this, but my current stash includes 8 liters of juice---that's 8,000ml.

I also have 1.5 liters (1,500ml) of flavoring concentrates.

Every month I tell myself that I will buy no more juice (or hardware), but---so far---I haven't succeeded very well.

Uff da.

Im not the one who can just give up lol. back to the question at hand :)..... I am sure everyone knows my little disagreement with Bill about #5 Toasted Toffee. Well to me Toasted Toffee taste nothing like a RY4 or even has a claim to be one but anyways ...I had a change of thought today that got me confused some more and would like to share. I have been so caught up in the name and taste of Toasted Toffee it took me a bit to figure it out. To me Toasted Toffee taste like Tribeca from Halo or should I say vice versa since kick juice has been out longer. So with this thought "I could be wrong " if you compare it to a juice that has a claim to be like a RY4. If anyone can confirm this it would be helpful, I have not had Tribeca in about 3 months but vaped it for like 5 months as my go to. In my recollection these two juices are the same taste with maybe a small difference. I will purchase another bottle of Tribeca and compare the two and give feedback. BTW Halo juice is like $24.00 for 30ml and Kick Juice is around the $16.00 lol just thought I would put that out there.

Passerbyeus,

OMG! Toasted Toffee returns from the grave! It's the juice monster that wouldn't die---even bullets can't kill it! LOL.

I just comparison vaped Toasted Toffee and Halo Tribeca. Here are my perceptions as they struck me:

1. Halo's signature "purity" base flavor in the Tribeca is finally receding into the background, thank heavens. As everyone knows by now, to me Halo's base tastes like a cross between disinfectant and bug spray. Now that it's significantly diminished through the aging of my remaining 2ml sample of Tribeca, I like the juice better.

2. Tribeca's constituent flavors are more separate to my palate. Toasted Toffee's components are unified or blended (puréed, to use the food analogy) into a more singular overall taste experience.

3. Tribeca has a focused sweetness that's fairly potent as a flavor, while Toasted Toffee's lower level of sweetness is softer and less focused. (This is consistent with #2 above.)

4. I can taste the vanilla in Tribeca. I get only a whiff of something vanilla-like in Toasted Toffee's flavor. (This also goes with #2 above.)

5. Toasted Toffee has more of a bite, while Tribeca is smoother. My brain interprets that extra bite as a tobacco element, but it might be just the higher nic content giving more throat hit (my sample of Tribeca is 18mg, whereas my DIY Toasted Toffee is 24mg).

6. Toasted Toffee has some sourness (like, ahem, Janty RY4), while Tribeca has none. That sourness, which is extremely rare in RY4s but distinctly present in the Janty original, is one of the main reasons I included Toasted Toffee on the Big List in the first place.

I should add that I'm not arguing for Toasted Toffee's return to the Big List. The fact is that I really don't care much anymore. Put it on, take it off. Whatever. At this point, I'm like the old woman who lived in the shoe and had so many children (RY4s) she didn't know what to do. One RY4 more or less won't make me lose any sleep.
