In the endless quest for the perfect RY4---or, at least, one that you really, really like---one of the options is to forego the temptation to buy yet another retail RY4 from the 37th vendor youve tried, and instead turn your hand to do-it-yourself juice-making.
The upside to DIY is that many, many flavoring concentrates are available. In the case of RY4 flavors, this includes nearly endless variations of caramels, vanillas, and tobaccos (plus nuts, if you're so inclined). And when youre whipping up Frankenstein RY4 concoctions in your mad scientist kitchen/lab, you can actually sample the recipes along the way, tweaking them based on how they taste to your particular palate. (No more clicking the Add a shot of caramel option when you dont know what the juice tastes like in its regular formula.) Also, DIY is fun.
The downside to DIY is that buying flavorings can become addictive, and almost as expensive as buying retail ready-mixed juice. Well, not quite, but sometimes it seems that way. Also, DIY is easy to mess up. To become a successful juice alchemist takes innate talent, learned skills, and loads of time, not to mention a reasonably good palate as well as healthy doses of patience and restraint. Getting impatient and adding too much flavoring kills the juice and is the quickest way to land in DIY jail. Along the learning curve of my own DIY efforts, Ive ruined more juice than some people have ever vaped. LOL.
When you blow it with DIY, thats sad, of course, but so what? Most of us have too many bottles of retail juice we paid good money for, but which we never vape. Unless we sell, trade, or give them away, those lousy juices (lousy being a subjective judgment) are consigned to a life sentence of forced confinement in our juice stashes/cellars. So, tossing a small bottle of failed DIY down the drain is surely no worse than that. Six of one, half a dozen of another.
If building an RY4 from scratch (meaning individual component flavorings) is a bit daunting, however, numerous RY4 flavoring concentrates are available that have taken care of that for you (supposedly). Just add liquid nic and PG/VG to the flavorings, and voilá! Instant RY4.
Below is a short list of RY4 flavoring concentrates and my experience with and reactions to them. More may be available, but these are ones I have. As always, my opinions are personal and subjective. Your mileage may vary.
I started out this experiment making small (3ml) bottles of each RY4 using 20% flavoring and 24mg nic strength in an 80/20 PG/VG blend, but I ended up increasing some of the flavorings to 30%, since they werent potent enough with less. I tested each by dripping into a Cisco-spec 2.0 ohm LR306 atty powered by a Madvapes VV Box set to 4.3 loaded volts for a power output of just more than 9 watts.
RY4 Type by Perfumers Apprentice: This was the first RY4 concentrate I ever bought, long, long ago. It was dreadful, disgusting perfumey and floral. Even the customer reviews on the TPA site agreed with me.
RY4 Exclusive by Perfumers Apprentice: The second formulation I got from TPA. This one was better---no perfume or flowers---but still not very good. Didnt remind me of any good RY4 Id ever tasted.
RY4 Double by Perfumers Apprentice: This is a relatively recent formulation by TPA that generated some buzz among DIYers here on ECF. And you know what? Its pretty good. Very caramelly, and certainly not going to challenge Janty or Ikenvape, but worth using, especially if you customize it with more or other flavors.
RY4 Classic by Perfumers Apprentice: This one is brand-new. I havent got any yet (a 4ml bottle is on the way as I write this post), so it probably shouldnt be in this list, but Im including RY4 Classic since I have high hopes for it. TPA has gotten better with each new formulation, and this one could be the best yet. Ill let you know.
DW3 by Decadent Vapours: Not really equivalent to an RY3, this flavor concentrate from Europe by DV is described as having two main flavors---biscuit and citron (lemony). And it does! Not an RY, but pretty tasty.
DW4 by Decadent Vapours. This flavoring is interesting. Hardly the best RY4 Ive ever vaped (or made, for that matter), but I like it quite a bit. DW4 has a nice mix of sophisticated flavors, and is definitely a contender in the diy RY4 sweepstakes, as long as you dont mind subtle flavors rather than bold intensity.
Note: Both DW flavorings are clearly designed to produce subtle juices, so Id advise against using more than 20%, since that may ruin the juices rather than intensifying their flavors.
RY4 Essence by Hangseng: One of the two Chinese entries in diy RY4. This ones weird. I have this in two bottles, one with a real Hangsen label (from ecigexpress), the other labeled Liberty-Flights. Exact same concentrate in both, though. I also have the retail Hangsen RY4 pre-mixed juice that is supposedly made from this concentrate, but that juice is golden colored, while the flavoring is perfectly clear. Yes, I know that flavorings often darken when nicotine is added, but that didnt happen here. The juice I made remained clear, even at 24mg. And it didnt taste like much, especially compared to Hangsens retail juice, which is quite nice. Bad batch of flavoring? I doubt it. Just weak and nondescript. I cant believe that this flavoring is what Hangsen uses for its RY4. Thumbs down.
RY4 Flavoring Essence by HealthCabin: This is the flavoring that HealthCabin uses for its proprietary in-house RY4. Its not bad, actually but its not very flavorful. Like the Hangsen Essence, the flavor is weak. At high concentrations, however---like 40%---it does make a juice that tastes similar to HealthCabin RY4, just not as good. HealthCabins prices are low enough, however, that Id recommend just buying their retail pre-mixed juice in the kicked-up doubled flavoring essence option. $9 for 30mls of pre-mix versus $3 for a diy version thats almost but not quite as good? Nah, not worth it.
Ruyan 5 Flavoring by Totally Wicked. This slightly misnamed concentrate is from TWs Patriot Range flavorings, touted to be caramel and tobacco. And thats exactly what it is when used in sufficient strength (30%). Its really quite good and packs a very nice tobacco kick. Add a little vanilla to transport this from Caramel Tobacco Country into true RY4 Land. In spite of the lack of vanilla, I give this one a thumbs up. Like Hangsen, Ruyan 5 is a totally transparent, clear-colored flavoring that makes an absolutely clear juice. Unlike Hangsen, this one has some flavor, LOL. (Totally Wicked also sells an RY4 flavoring, but I havent tried it. Might even be good.)
