Good morning Reoville. 11.5 inches of snow here. It was light fluffy stuff so it was easy to snowblow. Its even easier when your brother does it! Beans are cooking, bread is rising. Football on the tube. Both Reos primed and loaded. My seasoning of cast iron skillet didn't work. I have to start all over again. ggrrr....

How did you season Laurin ? I use lard and before doing if the cast is rough first I use self cleaning oven to clean it good then coat in lard and put in oven upside down on tinfoil for an hour max temp. Coat again the oven again then a light coat again and let cool. Works every time.

The skillet was in pretty good shape to start with. It has a real smooth floor on it, I used Canola oil and put the oven at 450 and the pan in for about 1 1/2 hours. My mistake was putting on too much oil so the oil pooled. The pan came out not smooth with sticky dark spots on it.

I'm going to do the self clean in the oven to start over and use less oil. I guess almost so you dont think theres any on it. Bake it again. Let it cool and do another light coat.

I've never done this before so I checked it out on the net. It seems the advise is all over the place for temperature, oils, time, etc.

Can the oven racks stay in when you self clean the oven?

Yes I leave them in and leave the pan on them I know Canola works but Ive had better luck with lard or bacon grease for seasoning if done right and you don't use soap to clean the pan it will last for ever trick is don't let anyone use dish soap on it if its real dirty scrub with rock salt then rinse and dry :)

No. Take the racks out, they have a chromium covering. The instructions on every self cleaning oven I have ever had always say take them out. But I just use hot soapy water to clean the cast iron, I have never done it in a self clean.

You might want to lower the oven also, I think it is 350? And a thicker grease like crisco or Darrel's Lard works better ;)

Alton Brown has a show on it, maybe you could find it. But his method is the method I use in any case.

and

Good (insert time of day) REOville. We are off to our Sunday brunch. I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Never use soap on cast iron it eats the seasoning the seasoning is oil the soap degrades the oil :)

Exactly so. But he wants to reseason it entirely, and in order to do that he needs to clean it first which is why he was going to put it in the self cleaning oven? Which would become unnecessary if he just uses hot water and soap ;)

But the oven makes even the pores clean. I've taken the ugliest most caked on rusted up old cast irons and made them look like new. It's all I use for cooking. Wish I had some good pots too. I have a beutiful old kettle but it's just decoration as it's more a pia IMO. I really want a Dutch oven found a real nice canada made one recently but it was allmost $300. Maybe one day.
