Do your friends and family a favor….
Hey…I know we don’t want to think about the worst case, but today it jumped up and bit me. Please for the love of god and all that is good, keep emergency contact information on your person at all times just in case. My dad disappeared on Jan 6th. I only found out this morning, the 24th. And to be honest, I panicked. He’s in his 70s and well, you just never know.
His apartment was a typical scene, nothing unusual. Didn’t appear that he had packed to go anywhere…all his personal belongings were where they should have been, but he had his wallet on him. Car was still parked outside.
So here is what happened…he went grocery shopping (on foot) and had a stroke in the store. An ambulance just happened to be passing by and was flagged down by the store owner. They took him to a trauma unit over an hour away where he stayed for 4 days before being transferred to a neurological rehab unit another hour further away. He couldn’t remember my number and didn’t have his phone on him. My photo is in his wallet, but no contact information. So he’s been in this unit since the 10th with no way of reaching me, my brother or anyone.
When I got the call this morning, his landlord was really worried and didn’t know what to do. Between him, my husband and me, we called hospitals and jails, searched obits and news and found nothing. Went to the sheriff to file a missing persons report and they found him about an hour later through their channels.
The good news is that my dad is okay considering the stroke and I’ve talked to him. But I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s always a good idea to have emergency contact info either on your phone or in your wallet (whichever you are most likely to carry with you no matter what) so that if something (god forbid) were to happen, your family or friends will be notified. I’m happy I found him, but I hope I never have to go through this again and that you never need to.

So sorry about your Dad!! What a heart wrenching story. I think everyone can learn from this.

Thanks everyone :) To say I'm relieved is an understatement...I cannot express the shear panic I was in this morning. Right now I'm just dead tired and am having a hard time getting my crap together. Trying to find flights within my budget so I can get down there Sunday. They're going to discharge him on Monday and I want to be with him. First order of business upon my arrival in AZ is to take care of that damned emergency contact information.

No sore throat for me. First symptom was the first chest congestion/bronchitis-y feeling that I've had since I started vaping. Fever set in less than 24 hrs later. Next two days were a blur of whimpering and misery. If you even suspect flu, go get the test and start taking Tamiflu. I waited a day longer than I should have (cuz I'm stubborn) and suffered more than I had to. CVS Minute Clinic. Call.

I am hoping that the flu shot I had will end this before it gets too bad. My throat seems a bit better after sipping warm drinks, no cough or chest involvement at all, but I feel achy. DH was coughing up a storm though and had to take some cough medicine, but no sore throat or aches. Did you get the flu shot? We both did so I am thinking we both got it and are fighting it off pretty well. Without the shot I am sure we would both be running the full gamut of symptoms. I am glad you are feeling better!

Lisa, I am so glad you were able to find him.
You gave some great advice, but here is a bit more: On cell phones create a contact, ICE, and put the number of whoever you want to notify there. It stands for "In Case of Emergency". Of course your father didn't have his phone, so something in the wallet is certainly needed as well. Make sure you list your meds, and medical conditions along with emergency contact. It is immensely helpful to us :)

Ya...I wish I would have time to visit with the locals, but as it is, I'll be lucky to get everything I need to do done in the time allowed. Sucks, really...I wanted my next trip to AZ to be a fun one. But given the situation, I'm just happy to have the chance to go back and hug my dad.
