Advice Needed!!

Probably be getting my puppy on Monday. Aus Shepard/ Heeler mix, be about 6 wks old. Advice be appreciated for his daily meals and treats. I haven't had a puppy since '95 and presume products have changed since

Right now you need to get whatever food he is eating now and a bag for what you want to feed him. A food switch too quick could upset his little tummy.

Thats what I thought too.... But many owner's letting them go early here so I thought things have changed. My puppy has already started to eat (owner's story) solid food but nut sure what it is yet.

Ideally they should stay with the mother till there second set of shots. But a lot of people that don't know any better or care rehome them at 6 weeks. EDIT: Mother milk gives them a immune system boost and helps prevent parvo.

Does catnip exist for dogs? I always wanted to ask that but never felt like saying things lke that outloud. I never had a cap. And believe it or not, I still really don't know what catnip IS exactly, other than it makes cats dopey.

Dognip? sure!

Catnip is like mint. So ofc all cool cats want fresh breath!

I bred boxer dogs, for years, always let them go from 6 weeks as long as they were feeding ok.
As small puppies, used to give them runny scrambled eggs, boiled cod, chicken, with a little bit boiled rice, all light stuff, never used to give them red meat till 3-4month, to avoid the runs.
If they do get the runs, use a little bit arrowroot, made up like a thick custard, with water, dries them up great

Maybe some breeds are diferent. I wouldn't bring my pup home at 6 weeks. My breeder wouldn't allow it.

Every one is different, as are all breeds of dogs, because you wouldn't, bring a pup home, at 6 weeks, or your breeder wouldn't allow it, doesn't mean that you & your breeder are right, everyone is entitled to do it their own way, bred boxers for over 30 years, & never had a problem letting them go from 6 weeks

The only reason I got Chica at 9 weeks was her second set of shots was due in 2 days and I had a vet appointment the next day. But I have a Chihuahua and I am finding they can be a special case.

We have terrific water in Hawaii, guess dem volcanic layers good to filter before it gets to the aquifers. But DW has a $1500 water filter thats over $2000 now I can use :).

Thanks Frank, how many meals a day did ya feed them? I'll make sure the pup eats well before bringing him home
At 6 weeks 4-5 small meals a day, drop it down by 1 meal every couple of weeks, increasing the size as you go, only reason I used to keep them off red meat, was red meat is rich for the little things, by 6 months, a light breakfast, & a main meal of meat & biscuits

Like you said, different breeds.

I've had Wolfhounds for 25 yrs and never got a pup at 6 weeks.

Put it this way Norman cheap dog food = more lawn chocolates (forum doesnt like conventional name for poop) good food high in protein will mean a healthier happier dog My last girl lived to 3 months shy of 20 years the extra cost of good food I believed will save even more on vet bills in the long run

I would think that the smaller breeds need more time with mama :). But all the pups are kept outdoors so a little concerned about that, just wanna do whats best for the dog. I'll call the owner and ask if I can wait a bit before picking him up and see how it goes.

Me too was surprised she let her go so early. But she did call and confirm my vet appointment. Now when we bred Chesapeake Bay Retrievers we let them go at 6 weeks. My Sheltie I had to wait till 12 weeks. Different breeds different ways.
